| Timber - 20081999120000 by Shadow Lord
| | Game: | Timber | Company: | Bally Midway | | Type: | Platform | Players: | 1-2 | "Oh, I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay...." (Sorry just HAD to make that joke).
Timber is a relative of Tapper, similar in graphics and ultimately similar
in gameplay. You are a Canadian lumberjack who chops down trees, alone or
with a rival, in the allotted time so that your cigar-chomping boss will
be satisifed enough so that you have a job for the next day. Along the way,
you need to avoid beehive-chucking bears and scoop up birds that flee from
fallen trees.
Canada? Lumberjack? There's GOT to be birling here somewhere, you are probably
saying. Indeed there is.. after three stages of chop-til-ya-drop, you get to
try birling (log rolling) for a bonus.
Fresh idea, good graphics and good sound! So why does this game suck so
bad? Well for one thing, it's not very challenging: for the first ten stages
you can chop the allocated trees with a minute to spare, and the beehives are
very easy to dodge. The trees wobble before they fall, so it's easy to avoid
getting flattened.
But after the twelve stages I was patient enough to play, I was quite bored:
in most games, at least you are rewarded with new innovative foes when you
advance, but not here. Just the same bear, the same bird and the same trees.
After just four stages of this game, you probably are wondering why you are
still playing it and that its time to move on with your life. Repetition is
much worse when the repetition isn't even challenging. This is one game I
saw in the arcades but never played. Boy am I happy: I don't know what I
spent that saved quarter on, but I'm sure it was a better value than this
game would be.
To make matters worse, MAME mangles this game. The sprites get confusing, the
graphics black out, and this game even quit twice on me! Jeez, I'm sure there
is a game worse than this one, but you'll have to scrape the bottom of the
barrel to splinters to get it.
Sorry guys. This MAME rom deserves the SHADOW LORD CURSE:
"May this rom fester in the corners of an unknown hard drive, never seeing the light
of day, and may the player of this game be evil enough to deserve the torture he will
receive at the hands of this rom!"
