Frogger - 20081999120000 by Shadow Lord
Game:FroggerCompany:Sega
Type:PlatformPlayers:1-2

Frogger was a big hit around the time of Pac-Man and shows how much that arcade games have changed. I imagine the challenge issued by Frogger -- to get a frog across a busy street and to his pad on a single 2d screen -- would be scoffed by most arcade jockeys of today.
Frogger was imaginative though -- here we have a character with absolutely no weapons or offense-based talent: he just hops in the direction indicated. If he survives the busy street, he must contend with a deadly swamp before he reaches an available domicile (5 in all, which must be filled before you graduate to the next screen) and along the way, you can mate with a female frog and perhaps grab a nice juicy fly on your quest.
As the levels progress, your job gets tougher. Snakes appear on the median, which was a safe haven in easier levels, the traffic gets faster, turtles dive more frequently, and the 'gators are more aggressive.
Yes, this was the arcade of my youth -- guiding frogs across screens, manuvering a yellow sphere through a maze eating wafers, and speeding Light Cycles zipping across blue grids. Any teenagers frequenting this site may look at these games as antiques from a bygone era, but remember -- they were the biggest and baddest we could manage back in the glittery 80s.
Anyway, MAME performance on this one is flawless. Sound is perfect, the gameplay and graphics are just what I remember. The weaknesses of this game betray its age: it is repetitive and flat. However, Frogger was quite an innovative and fun game for its time.
