Astyanax by Maddog
Game:AstyanaxCompany:Jaleco
Type:FightingPlayers:1/2

Obscure trivial fact,No.17856434:Astyanax means "King of the City" in ancient Greek (Asty=City and Anax=King). How do I know?Well,I come from there actually (...not ancient though!),so I guess you can have my word for it. :) Having interpreted the game's name to the world,I guess we can now see if it can actually claim the title and be placed among the kings of the arcades of the past and the PCs of today...

Astyanax is a scrolling fighter. You play a macho he-man, wielding a great axe and intent on ridding the world of the various foul beings that as usually seem to occupy it.The game scrolls mostly horizontally, with a few vertical breaks and it is split in several stages. At the end of each,a bigger, nastier monster resides, waiting to tear your egoism (and self) apart.Along the way,you can pick up some goodies, like a shield, extra energy or some magic, that works as a smart bomb, destroying all on-screen enemies at the touch of a button. Finally, not using your axe for a while, results in a flaming weapon that can deal some extra damage when it hits.
The visual and aural pleasures in this game are an average bunch.Graphics are n't very detailed, although I have to admit some enemies are drawn well and imaginatively.A funny touch is the agile "women" that hop all around you in the 5th (I think...) level. If you land enough hits on them, they seem to lose their clothes and run out of screen in shame, lol :).Sound is not really that good, since it gets repetitive and somewhat distorted at times (maybe a bad rom/imperfect emulation there?).Gameplay is hard, but not impossible, but variety is limited there, too. In general the game never really takes off, others of the same age (ca 1989) are far better:Remember Rastan or Golden Axe? There are also some other complaints:Duration of the game is pretty average, collision detection is strange at best (you can even kill some enemies that are behind you,if you fire at the correct moment!) and a general repetitiveness downgrades the game even more.
Astyanax is brought to you in the latest Raine and only Raine. Emulation is decent, except for the minor sound glitches. But,as I told already, the game delivers nothing really new or good enough,so it is recommended only to collectors or lovers of the type. The rest can do far better with one of the others I mentioned before.
So,"King of the City"?Pah,not really..."Jester of the Court" might be more appropriate and NO,I won't translate that into ancient Greek, either! :)
