P-47 by Maddog
Game:P 47Company:Jaleco
Type:ShooterPlayers:1/2

Zooooommmm...Coming straight from the bloodstained skies of WW2,P47 (subtitled The Freedom Fighter) is one more game in the huge line of horizontal shooters. Not surprisingly, your mission as an ace pilot is to clear huge areas from enemies.Your skills and guns are your only hope to get back alive, winning World War 2 in the process :) So,if you feel you're up to it,lets scramble!
P47 was one of the famous American fighters in the 2nd World War.You are in command of this menacing piece of metal and to win you'll have to shoot enemy planes, trains, tanks etc-generally anything the game throws against you :) Of course, the standard gun of your plane won't take you far,so you can get various goodies,to give you that much needed extra firepower. At the end of each stage a huge enemy, many times larger than your plane, awaits to be blown away.
P47 claims no prizes on originality, but is still a nice, addictive game.Graphics are quite nice and clear and most enemies can be identified as actual Axis planes of the era.One huge historical innacuracy, though, are the helis that come against you.God,Jaleco, have you EVER seen any helicopters in WW2 movies/books?The things weren't there at the time!!!Variety is somewhat limited too,but the game hides this in a quite clever way,so it never gets irritating.Sound is functional, though no awards will ever be issued to it.It just serves the purpose nicely...I will though award high marks to the difficulty issue. Most shooters tend to be incredibly hard and chaotic, with millions of bullets flying around, requiring mostly pure luck than actual skill to get you by.P47 is rather more logical.Early stages are fairly reasonable, giving a decent playtime even to newbies and later the game grows harder, without ever becoming paranoid...Nice for a change!
Pitifully, graphics are a mixed bunch. Most are good, but explosions seem surprisingly pixelated and the destruction of the enemy bosses is not as satisfying as it should. In most cases, you keep on shooting, the enemy sprite never seems to get a scratch and then, suddenly,it blows up.A most progressive destruction (flames springing from the enemys' engines etc.) would be far better. Also, repetition of in-game graphics is more obvious in the bosses (...haven't I seen this tank/ship before?).A final nasty surprise comes at the end of the game:It plonks you right back to the beginning, without any acknowledgements to your "achievement".Hey,man,I have won WW2 single-handedly,where's my medal of honor?! (actually,nowhere!...)
All in all,a fairly interesting game, worth a shot or two.It comes to us in the latest great version of Raine (0.18).Btw,there are two versions,US and Japanese,to try out.Emulation is almost perfect. Only very occasional and minor glitches arise.Wow,Raine has evolved into a great piece of code!
Try this game if you are into shooters. It will make a good enough change from the usual spaceships and sheer difficulty of some of the competition. Now,if you excuse me,I'll have to try to get that Medal of Honor...
