Flying Shark by Maddog
Game:Flying SharkCompany:Taito
Type:ShooterPlayers:1/2

Hmmmm,I always thought that sharks were beasts of the swimming kind :) but I may be mistaken...So,what we have here is a Flying Shark. I suppose this is a good enough reason to investigate the case,it might be a very rare bird indeed! :)
Sharky-baby is basically a vertically scrolling shooter, but the screen also has some slight ability to scroll horizontally, almost doubling the play areas' size. This is a good idea,as you never get the feeling that the screen's size constrains you.Of course the usual hordes of planes, trains and just about any other mechanized enemies await you,to turn your shark to the underground kind,ie buried :) and, believe me,they'll do a fine job at this. Of course you can try to avoid their intentions, employing a machine gun (which can be upgraded to some impressive firepower,if you are a good enough pilot) and some bombs, which are very effective at wiping out anything that travels around on screen. The game plays even better with two players, resulting in a wonderful and fun on-screen chaos.
Flying Shark dates back to 1987,but holds its own quite well even today.Graphics are very neat and clear.I particularly love the way the enemy planes crash once you've shot them.Very juicy indeed...Down to the ground, you little creeps,DOWN!...erm,just got a bit carried away I think. ;) Sound is pretty good as well, especially the background tune, which gives that nice "let's get 'em" feeling. But,getting 'em isn't always THAT easy. This game is hard,I can tell you. Here follows an actual excerpt from the previous version of Shark, the emulator docs: "to those who asked if it really was supposed to be this difficult we can only say,no,it was even harder. And that is on the easiest setting." Any conclusions are yours on this matter...What I have to add, is that the game is rewarding your efforts. You CAN learn it and get a little farther with each new game, without ever getting the feeling of being badly stuck. But some patience will be a necessary virtue here...
To nag a little (don't we all have to,from time to time?),the graphics are a little repetitive and when you lose a life the game throws you somewhat back AND removes all extra firepower, thus punishing severely any slight misjudgements.Due to the game's speed, this will happen more often than never...
But,all in all,Flying Shark is a good game.I still remember the times I was feeding it with my pocket money. It is a very pleasant experience to be able to play this game once again, since it was one of the best shooters around at the time.It is emulated only in Shark, the emulator. The latest release of Shark plays it and a couple of clones (namely Sky Shark and Hishouzame) gracefully. So,do yourself a favor and try this game...your fun is guaranteed for a lot of time! After all, Flying Shark IS an interesting species, even if you are not into zoology... :)
