Road Fighter by Maddog
Game:Road FighterCompany:Konami
Type:RacingPlayers:1/2

Road Fighter puts you behind the steering wheel of a massive V-12 DOHC 2500PS turbocharged piece of mean steel. You must drive at mind-boggling speeds, like a madman, across the continent. In this race, there's no prize for being second best!
At the race's start, you are placed at number 40 in the starting grid.Equiping every single horse available in the "stable" under your hood, you must outrun all opponents and come first through the finish line.As nobody among them seems to drive any Beetles or Yugos, your mission isn't one of the easiest around...To make things even worse, all commuters in the area seem to drive various muscle cars and none of them seem kind enough to give you space or let you have a peaceful overtake.Additional hazards include some pesky trucks and various water pools, oil slicks,middle-of-the-road obstacles and sudden bends. Finally, your machine guzzles fuel like an F-15 on full afterburner.Since every slowdown or crash results in a big chunk of gasoline to be bitten off your fuel tank, you must be REALLY careful. As there seem to be no gas stations alongside of the road, any mistakes will soon lead you to pushing your car along and, naturally, the dreaded Game Over message. Points are awarded for every car you've passed on your way and for the position you hold in the race and additional glory awaits the really fast (or lucky...) ones that make a top time.
The visuals of the game are rather primitive-no surprise really as it is a very old (1984) arcade title. They are generally blocky and undetailed. What saves the day somehow is the sheer speed at which the game moves. It gives a good (for the time...) impression of racing along at 400 km/h-that's about 250 mp/h for you Americans out there! ;) Sound is somewhat dodgy too,but it sure brings back memories of the arcades of the good ol' time, with all the beeps, pows, etc etc.The game's difficulty is reasonable and the fun factor quite high.
On the other hand, low marks are awarded for the lastability of the game,as most people will soon find themselves bored of it and for the control you have on your machine.Often, you'll find yourself spinning all over the place with little or nothing you can do to avoid the crash, especially at high speeds, where you usually have less than zero time to react to any emergencies.
Road Fighter is emulated in our beloved MAME,which supports two romsets, with minimal differences among them.Emulation is almost arcade perfect,as the simplicity of the game helps its' case.My final verdict? The game is a pretty interesting piece of arcade history, worth at least a look (or two...).Simple and enjoyable,as most of the old timers were!
