A Year Ago In Emulation... - September 27,1999 by JoseQ
How about a look back at Retrogaming? That's like somekind of retro-retro look isn't it? Still, I think this isthe birth of another regular feature at EmuViews. Every nowand then I will take a look back and point you to the happenings of a year ago, using the EmuViews articles asreference. Do you think it's a good idea? (let me know). So let's get right on to what was happeningone Sunday, 27th of September in the year 1998 and eventshappening close to that date.
It seems on that day the only news item that I postedwas the release of RetroRadioalthough this wasn't the first edition of this popular showwhich has seen more than a year of good and popular action.
However, the previous day, I was honored to post an InterView with Mirko Buffoni.Mirko is a very important figure in emulation, being very famous for his time serving as administratorfor MAME. This was the time when betas were not public, and the MAME WIPpage was a lot more interesting because it was the only page where youcould see what MAME had been doing for the past month or more.
Also, that same day marked the birth of M72, a great emulator that hassince vanished from existence sadly. It was the firstemulator to support R-type with true sound emulation, aswell as other games from the M72 hardware platform. Ironically, MAME will be supporting this kind of hardwarein it's next release, doing what M72 did a year ago.
I also posted a little something about EmuViews new home which waswhen I had just started SpeedHost.Com and found the permanent home for this site. A year goes by faster thanI would remember.
Another event that happened a little longer than a year ago wasthe Initial Release of Retrocade. Retrocade wasone of the more trascendental emulators of the time, featuring an incrediblynice interface, and lots and lots of speed, which for some of those gameswas badly needed at the time. There are rumors about Retrocade still lurkingaround with possible releases these days.
I will try to do this every other day or so, to covernice events that happened one year ago and remember goodtimes of yesteryear while we enjoy the fruits of thepresent developments. Please remember to send in yourcomments, and suggest anything else you would like to seeposted. Thanks for reading!
