The Rumor Mill - October 14,1999 by JoseQ
Well guys and girls, it is time once again for theone and only EmuViews Rumor Mill. This time I've gotreports from all around, with info on topics like Retrocade, Raine, and even from web sites surroundingthe emulation scene. Some other Rumors involve theHotRod building HanaHo Games, Inc. and some possibledeals on getting your own professionaly built, ArcadeCabinet for your home. So let's get those Rumors going.
First, I would like to provide you with an insidereport on the status of Retrocade. Although previousreports had mentioned it as being idle, they might evenhave triggered some action in the team. My sources indicatethat at the helm of the project right now is Brian Peekwith the occasional help from Neil Bradley. Direction hadsteered off for about 2.5 months when CE developmentstarted while no progress was made game-wise. However, theWindows CE knowledge increased tremendously.
Changes that you can expect to see in the next Retrocadeinclude Improved graphic system and enabled for rotation, which was a lot of work and actually broke pretty muchevery game in there. What I hear is that they're about 7games short of getting every game working once again. There are the usual, but numerous internal fixes, crashfixes, mz80 fixes which affected Galaga and Berzerk.
Joust performance got improved to twice it's originalaccomplished speed. Games added include: Q*Bert, Uniwar S, Moon Alien part 2, Pengo, Mr Do!, and Super Galaxian. Thecrash problems with Toobin were also fixed. After thisrelease is finished and done, new direction will be takentowards the 34010 games (Smash TV, and the likes) andBrian Peek will be working on the Atary System 1 games.
All in all, not major news coming from the emulator, although it definitely makes me feel better that it isindeed being worked on. Those 34010 and Atari System 1games are something to look forward in future releases. There seems to be some rumors flying around about anotherrelease within two weeks.
If it is Raine rumors you want, then read this. A newbeta was released to testers earlier in the week. A coupleof the new games have been made available as well, butno mention of those ROMs that were hidden in the previousversion. Rumors mentioned include that they will beincluded straight in the next release and be madeavailable then.
If it is Impact that pleases you (JDR, skip this paragraph), then I've got some news that may excite you!Yet another game has been added to it. The game goes bythe name of "Rival Schools" or "Justice Gakuen". I havenever seen this game so there's not much I can say aboutit. However, the exciting part comes when some reportscame in stating that there might be a teaser versionreleased soon! There was no date on the reports, or whatfeatures the teaser will have, or lack, but it sure seemsnice to know. The author(s) would like to have more gamesdumped, so if you have access to boards with the followingsystems: Namco System 11 & 12, Taito FX1, Capcom ZN2 & ZN2 contact me!
Some nice website rumors come from sites like The Digital Arcade. Have you visited it lately? It seems that visitors have been supportive now that the site is closed, and that may trigger a comeback. A message on the sitestates that they should come back bigger and stronger; notto mention with more ROMs. If it is visitor support thatthey need, be sure to give it to them.
Another rumor I've heard is that one of the older andpopular emulation web sites may be switching it's mainman soon. That doesn't mean that this site may becomeOtherQ's EmuViews, but stay tuned for an official announcement soon at that particular site.
There is also this rumor about a new emulationsite that should be the mother of all sites, forming anetwork of news that will make The Associated Press palein comparison, well maybe not that much, but that's the idea. There should be a preview within say, two months, and it should open widely by next year.
And finally, I'll keep this rumor short, because theURL that was provided to me was so new, it still doesn'twork. However, you should keep an eye on eBay for somecool Arcade Cabinets built by HanaHo, which distributesthe awesome HotRod Joystick. Apparently, these guys, known asArcade Excitement, planto post there some emulation targeted cabinets with nothingless than 27" monitors and huge sound power. I'll make anannouncement if I see them posted. It should happen withina week or so. Please note that Arcade Excitement will actas a re-seller of this equipment, and it is not HanaHothemselves doing this.
That's it for this edition of the Rumor Mill. Feel freeto leave your comments here, and have a couple of discussions on what you've read here. Thanks for reading!

It's too bad about Daves going down.. First Daves, now this.. But I dont think the rumor has anything to do with this SPECIFIC emusite changing ownership

I heartily agree with Jim...man, it's a big non-publicly announced change, and my guess is it's probably for the worse. Remember when Damaged Cybernetics went down? Yikes...yeah, it sounds bad, and old-time emu guys may know what I mean. Let's just hope for the best...and Dave, no matter what happened or what may happen, thanks for everything, and good luck, man.

I don't think it has been discontinued. iViLDeD hasn't posted anything about this on his home page so 1 of 2 things is possible...

1. This post wasn't by iViLDed himself (JoseQ - check IP?)
or
2. It was iViLDeD that posted it and he said it to stop people from pestering...read his homepage regarding teasing.

I might be totally wrong. Just my opinion.

Seriously, if you knew anything @ all you would already have them.

You're not gonna find them by going to Yahoo and searching for "1337 Impact RoMz fro hax0rs like me"

GD /me loves rom beggars...

Noone is holding back any roms. They are out there. You don't suppose us to put them on the official page do you? How many emulators have the roms on their site?

It's not really our problem to supply the roms, they are out there, you just have to look for them. Once the emulator is released they will be everywhere.

There is no way that you can program an emulator with a release date over a several years. And Aprentice, go do some research you ask questions.

Really big mill ( both length and news )!
The only thing that let me sad is HotRod
becomes really *very* expensive if you
try purchase it from outside USA. I'd like
to buy one! ( Hey Hanaho guys, read that and take some action! :) )

It's kind of a problem since the unit is both kind of big, and also kind of heavy. It is made using very sturdy materials, so the price to ship it is simply not cheap at all. :(

I do feel they're kind of high, but they are using UPS probably which is more expensive. Maybe they can consider USPS in the future which would be lower for international shipments. I'll relay the message.

Thanks JoseQ! I think that's not only my problem, but one really sad to people in other countries. I could build one arcade control for me, but the Hanaho one is my mind, though :) For me here in Brazil, costs under $100, but is not so sophisticated. Thanks anyway

Lets face it, its a great time for emulation. Emulators are getting faster and more reliable. Releases of new emus happens almost daily now. My feelings on the great wait for the unreleased emus is: Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. =]

34010 is in major need of speedy emulation. Anything you guys can do to make it better than is currently available is greatly appreciated by yours truly. Hope you can come through. You have our encouragement.

From: 200.151.42.209
Jose,

This has been the best serving of rumors in a long time. Finally nice to know that the Retrocade team is still alive. Should be great to see additions of already popular games in MAME coming to RC. And the sooner the better should the Bally/Williams (TMS34010) go into production. And then to see Atari System 1 emulated on RC will make me want to go back to my Roadblasters runs again.

As for Raine, A new version always sooths the savage beast within me craving fresh meat off the ROM Readers.

But the one I'm looking forward to is The Impact Emulator. I have played Rival School on the PSX. It plays alot like Street Fighter EX. And Jose, It's Capcom ZN1 & ZN2. There are some juicy shots in The Impact that make me wish I had a better system right now. I guess I'll copy The Impact and The ROMS for it onto a CD-ROM and archieve it til a newer system comes into my life.

But what about past topics that have seemed to have disappeared. Such as the Dynamic Recompiling Bally/Williams TMS34010 EMU & The Sega System 32 EMU? Have they disappeard or gone into secret development? Who knows. Still, I got my fingures crossed.

I believe someone asked this same question in another message earlier in the week. :) I have not received any news about those two since last reported here at the Rumor Mill. I'll try to find if there is something going on, but I believe they probably are busy with their real lives. Maybe they make good progress around the next holiday seasons. I'll try to get some info for the next mill. :)
