A Year Ago Today... - October 15,1999 by JoseQ
It is time once again to take a look a year back, and feel what was happening then in the emulation world. Going back into the History crystal ball, I find that a year agothe day, MAME 0.35 beta 4 was released to the public. This brought the introductionof the ASM core into MAME and support for "Ring King" which was mentioned in the previous history article. Other major additions include the introductions to the Exidy gun gameslike "Crossbow" and "Cheyenne" which were quite popular in the arcades a long time ago.
I remember this released happened just a few minutesafter MAME32 had been updated to theprevious DOS version. Kind of ironic indeed...
A day before, a new DTMNT Release which was quiteactive then. DTMNT was the only emulator to play the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" games at a time whenMAME still didn't support it. It was coded by Dave, thesame author of DGen, amuch newer Genesis emulator. Gee, I wonder why he puts a 'D' first in his emulator names...
And yet another one of the Rumor Mill precursors, aNews Update which includedsome announcements about bleem! interviews, ROMLIST releases, a new Neo Geo emulator that atila ofRetrogames wastesting, and a guess at a Raine release which didn'thappen for 10 more days.
Well that was basically it. Not much happening thosedays, or I believe I was very busy at the time, thusnot being able to update the page much. However, we dosee how a lot of stuff has changed, like DTMNT whichno longer exists since MAME supports the game entirelyand the new MAME release which certainly feels like yesterday, although it has had 18 other releases sincewhich would put the average at one release every threeweeks or so. Which would mean that another release shouldbe near, and it sure feels like that. Let's just crossour fingers for a release during this weekend!

One Article Up: SNEeSe 0.371 released...
One Article Down: SNEeSe 0.37 is out!

I think the MAME developers should concentrate on speeding up emulation and optimizing what they have now rather than adding game after game. It is a good emulator, but I'd like to play with sound some day, because it's too slow now.

Hope MAME continues to make more strides. I waited a L-O-N-G time for T2-The Arcade game to finally work.

Dave's Videogames Classics has become history it seems. :/ It's now a rather impersonal looking 'corperate' site, sans 'risky' emulators.
