The Rumor Mill - October 21,1999 by JoseQ
And what else could be a better first post for todaythan a Rumor Mill? Well sadly, this Rumor Mill has a coupleof not so happy thoughts in it, but oh well, time willfix everything as you will see. There are of course, theusual number of good news and rumors for you to enjoy, soit's not all bad. So let's open the bag and see what's in itfor this week, shall we?
Let's just get some of the quick ones right out of thebag, and I'll leave the good for last. Those of you awaitingfor a Retrocade release soon, might have to wait a littlelonger. The release has been postponed due to some real lifematters that need to be handled. Since there are stillsome details to be punched into the code, the release shouldget pushed back for about a week. I would say that Halloweenlooks like a good weekend for a release, but it might turnout to be later than that. We all know that it is hard topredict when emulators are done, and with such highquality standards held by the Retrocade guys, I'm amazedthey do it in the time they do.
Other news about delays got here from the Raine correspondant. Although there was no date mentioned forthe next Raine release, it did seem like it was getting closer. However, reports indicate that some new developmentsmight postpone Raine efforts for a few days at the least. So I wouldn't hold my breath for a Raine release thisweekend or the halloween weekend either, although theremight be a surprise here or there.
One thing I should mention regarding one of last weeksrumors... Since I broke out the news that an emulationnews website was changing helms, people have speculatedthat it meant Dave's Classic and his semi-retirement fromthe scene turning his site into 'Vintage Gaming'. Wellpeople, that is not the case, that took me entirely bysurprise since I had lost my correspondant to that sitea long time ago. However, the site I was referring to, hasyet to make an official announcement.
I have been given the opportunity to look at the latestdevelopments regarding The Digital Arcade, which as of now, remainsclosed. I shall say that I'm definitely envious at thework in progress I've been able to see. Me and my 18 monthold layout sure could use an update, and the one you willsee there will certainly break new grounds... Oops, did Isay too much? Maybe not. The site has asked for support inthe past, and it is not to late to give. It would be nice tovisit and say hello.
I've gotten quite a bit of good news from a certainmember of MAMEDEV. His report indicates that a good numberof new games will be added with his new driver. Some of themmight sound familiar to you as names like: "Puzzle Bobble 2" and "Puzzle Bobble 3" and other Taito games. Some ofthe games however, have not been emulated yet in any otheremulator. As it will probably turn out however, this maytake a couple of releases before it makes it in. I'll tryto have a few pics from those new games soon.
Another report I received involves The Impact andRomCenter. Itappears that RomCenter will now include support for eightROMs supported by this new unreleased emulator. I guessthat'll be a "way to go" for Romcenter!
I guess I'll stop the Rumor Mill now, and let you guyspost your comments here on all that was mentioned. Thanks for reading!

Oh,well... I'll break my own rule to answer since there are many questions here that are worth going through again.

>if a games you look and want put in mame
>doesn't run well please ignore it
>we are appassionate of old arcade games since children ages and if you made a games
>runs with bug and crash no sound,we are not well
>in definitive please don't kill feeling of games you add to mame
>i hope in future you and mame team remember that and put only a full working drivers to the future releasing mame
>(please in this)
Mame is a project whose only main goal is to preserve and document arcade games of the past. This is well explained in the documentation. The ability to end up playing the games, is a commodity. As such project, we most definately want to accurately emulate every arcade system and hardware out there.
Unfortunately, there are times when it does not matter how much effort you put onto something, you just cant get it right.
A person writing a driver may just get stuck on something, or simply some other real life matter take over his/her time. The idea to leave the driver there is to both let this person resume his job, or have any other person who downloads the source, to try to complete or help complete the driver. Eventually, everyone, including the people in the Mamedev, wants to get every machine right. Sometimes it just takes longer than expected.
About the people that dont want to kill the experience by playing an incomplete driver, well, we try to warn people by putting a message when the game either does not work correctly, has imperfect colors or does not have sound.
If you are the kind that wants the most of the experience, then dont ignore such warnings. And if you're also the programmer type, just download the source, see why it doesnt work and try to collaborate.

>why mame add games released by another emulator?
Because, like i said, we want to document every possible arcade hardware out there. Sometimes it just happens to be other's emulators hardware.

>is that emulators came to vanish?
I wouldnt think so. It's true that MAME has its own benefits, such as a good 'framework-type' design, wich makes writing drivers usually faster than starting an emu from scratch. Plus it has code that has been battle-tested long enough to be certain that you can rule out some specific bugs. However, i still see emulators of all kinds showing up.

>is this programers of that emulators according to mame for put their drivers on mame?
>and why?
We do get a lot of help from other emu authors.
I believe this is not only productive for us, but also for them. Im not in the position to answer why this or that emu author decided to contribute to MAME. However, having written my own standalone emulators, there has been many times where you dont have that large amount of time to work on them anymore, and instead of letting such information rot in your harddrive, you just pass it on to some other people who may have the time to follow on your work.

>why raine and m72 developers don't release himself a update of their emulators?
I cannot answer this question.

>raine core is fast than mame core?
>m92 core is faster than mame core?
I wouldnt know. I've never run the M92 emu, and only ran Raine a long time ago.
Id like to make a point on speed tho, MAME's core is quite 'generalistic' in many ways. Thats the only way and reason why the same core can 'adapt' itself to that many different types of hardware. There are some drivers wich implement their own speedups, but in general most of them just use the core.
This impressive design comes at a cost. Sometimes speed is the variable that makes the balance.
If speed is your concern, there are other emulators out there wich outperform MAME.
HIVE comes to mind.

>why the games emulated by m72 releasing in mame don't work propely than m72?
I believe the driver code has been written from scratch with help from NAO. That is, its not a straight port from NAO's code to the driver.

>nao is vanished?
I dont know.

>why mame has releasing about a day after mameb36b7 release version of mame36b7.1?
I want this to be CLEAR. The latest *OFFICIAL* MAME version is mame36b7. That mame36b7.1 release comes from Mr Tim Eckel at Arcade@Home and ofcourse its an unofficial version. Even if Mr Eckel wants to misinform you and post it as official.

Ernesto.

From: 62.83.114.52

It is obvious that this guy (Piolo) is here just to make us pay him attention when he doesn't deserve it, as proven by himself, a typical lamer attitude:

- He doesn't really know what he's talking about when refers to betas, programming, drivers, speed, anything...

- The only thing he cares of is playing...

- No matter what you tell him, you'll never make him change his mind or attitude...

- No matter what the emu-scene or programmers do he will never be satisfied...

- He will _not_ stop writing rubbish in the board, the fact that people bother to answer him just will make things worse, by ignoring him it is possible he surrends and leave us alone...

please _do not_ answer this msg unless is something really relevant, or we could be talking about lamers forever...

btw, I have enough experience about lamers (demo scene, and now emu scene) to know what I am saying, forgive me for this msg but I think is necessary...

keep the scene alive!...

If you think MAME is Trash, then don“t use it!
If you want that Mame emulate the games Faster, then learn programming and Join the MAMEdev and tweak some Funktions for a Speedup.
Last Words:
Mame is not fast , but the accuratest Arcadeemulator.
And that is in my opinion more word then a little Speedup.
By a faster MAschine and the Games run in Fullspeed!

Now shut up ! You *****

This is my last reply to you. I rather spend my time writing C code for another MAME driver to make the 'other' 99.9% of the emu people happy than talking to a souped up person who definately dont want to listen.

Ill first make a point on the topic of the post. Who are 'us'?. As far as i have been able to read its you against the world.

>i am not a lamerz
>i am only a man who wants some great of this emu-scene every day
Then you need to understand that there is constructive criticism, and bashing. Anything constructive is welcome, because it helps achieve higher standards.

>i don't watse my time only with words
>my words are fact
>a fact of years of esperience in the scene of a real arcade player
This is arrogance at its best.

>joseq excuse me if i take much space on your message board but i want more crearly information about this(real?)
>programmers like m.a.m.e,neogeo,raine
Yes, im real.

>in definitive if a game is not emulated
>well,it's a faul of a programmers,and you programmers don't tricks us forever
>(i hope isn't forever)
Since you're unhappy with Mame, here's a deal:
You let me know how much you paid for Mame and ill be happy to reinburse you personally.

>another site has post a gold cup for a
>best programmers to made definitive build of his emulators or programs(not a beta) mame hurry up if you want get it
Did you get to realize that we dont write Mame for money, fame or even a golden cup?. Unlike you would seem to believe, we actually have a spare life, with real life jobs included, and Mame is most definately a hobby for every one of us.

>ernesto corvi i have a questions to you
>why mame team stop making final release?
We didnt. We make periodic final releases. The sole fact that you, the public in general, get the betas is a simple commodity. If you dont like betas, dont download them.

>why mame team don't want to put in mame drivers free(like zsnes, genesis, ultrahle)?
Mame is free, like the emus you mention.
Mame's source code is free and available, unlike at least some of the emus you mention.

>i want to search my favourite games
???

>i want to put my favourite games to mame
You are welcome to. Grab the source and do it.

>i hope if you want made this true for all agree with me
>in last thank you hovewer
You are welcome.

So far we all have seen in this list what you can achieve with your posts. The question now is what can you achieve with your code?

Ernesto

>i am not a lamerz

sorry man, but you _are_ a lamer... why?... ok unlike you, I'm going to _answer_ your statements...

you say you aren't one, but I'm afraid you are not the best person to judge that... other people are able to judge it by your acts, behaviour, etc... objectively... keep on reading...

>i am only a man who wants some great of this emu-scene every day

ok, if this is true, why don't you tell us why are you losing your time writing this rubbish and start coding some drivers on your own?... or your own emulator?... whatever...

you love the emu-scene, fine... you want it for allowing you retroplaying, fine... you like it because you _receive_ (and for free), thus if you are not to contribute somehow the best thing you can do is shuting your mouth and just playing as much as posible (referred to un-perfect drivers limitations), and leave emu[authors, scene] alone...

>i don't watse my time only with words

ok, tell us what you have done, are doing, or are gonna do for the emu scene to prove this...
you might not be wasting your time but certainly are wasting _others'_...

>my words are fact

I've never told those facts were false, all I say is why don't you do some CODING to change that... words like yours aren't of any help at _all_...

>a fact of years of esperience in the scene of a real arcade player

real arcade _lamer_... just playing (nothing against it) but complaining every now and then about it not being perfect is lame, you don't like it because it is _not_ perfect, you don't play it fellow, it is that simple!, are you able to understand this?... on the other hand, if your experience was that of a real retrogamer you wouldn't be here behaving in this way, knowing that this kind of flaming is not gonna encourage emu developers anyhow... keep always in mind that they do this for FREE, you have the right to complain about NOTHING... got it?... go complaining your mother, father, girlfriend, anyone else...

>joseq excuse me if i take much space on your message board but i want more crearly information about this(real?)

excuse me too JoseQ, but this guy is a _real_ lamer, and he doesn't even know it... he thinks he has the right to ask for explanations... he has no rights for anything (in this context, that is) or whatsoever...

>in definitive if a game is not emulated
>well,it's a faul of a programmers,and you programmers don't tricks us forever

I will repeat (and hopefully for the last time)
'till you undertand it, it might be their fault, it might not... but anyway you are not in a position to ask for anything... you think they are doing wrong (MAME dev in this case)... man, you have the source available... got your copy and start fixing all those tiny/little/big/huge things you talk about... they never get fixed by the MAME team... well such is life... do it yourself!...

>another site has post a gold cup for a
>best programmers to made definitive build of his emulators or programs(not a beta) mame hurry up if you want get it
>ernesto corvi i have a questions to you

it is not Ernesto, not [raine, mame,...] related... keep on guesing...

>why mame team stop making final release?

how much experience do you really have?...
do you remember why MAME start releasing betas?
sure you don't, or you have never known about it...
have you read my message about not releasing un-perfect drivers?... do you read emu documentations at all?

>why mame team don't want to put in mame drivers free(like zsnes, genesis, ultrahle)?

Do you know what you are talking about?, you lamer!
IMHO you don't even know what a emulator really is or how it works... you are just a real lamer player who doesn't care about anything else...

>i want to search my favourite games
>i want to put my favourite games to mame

/* ironical mode on */

yes, and I would also like MAME to allow me play
the Dreamcast games, and would also like MAME team to start coding a Playstation 2 emulator...

/* ironical mode off */

ok, I have tryed to aim this message to as many lamers as posible (not only Piolo), hoping it make some guys undertand a couple of things... it is unlikely it happens (lamers are... just lamers)... but you never know... keep the emu-scene alive!...

1.- Are you really a retrogamer?
2.- Do you want the games to be fully playable, with sound, and everything?... that is, do you want'em to be perfect?

then, why don't you?

1.- Learn to program emulators (no, forget about VB/ or similar)
2.- Take those "incomplete" games and finish'em _yourself_

Come on!!!, get your ass off your seat and start moving... otherwise stop flaming the MAME team in particular and the whole emu-developers in general...

Finally, what would happen if those "incomplete" games weren't included in the program, you lammers would be crying for them although they haven't been completed... you would be complaining in either case... please leave the emu-scene alone and bother someone like YOU...

Piolo,
I see you didn't read what I said to you in my reply so lets get a bit more basic huh?
Simply put....if you don't like the incomplete drivers in MAME then for godsake DON'T USE THEM!!! or wait for the final release....I'm sure Nicola will be pleased to have some income for a change from MAME ;)
Finally...if you're not going to listen to our replies then don't waste space on Jose's message boards with your flaming! Do it on a lamers site!

It's all really a consipracy against you.
Most people think the Mame team is there to emulate arcade games, but in reality we're an organization that conspires against you.
Thats why we keep on bashing you with betas all the time, so you feel enraged at us.
I can see we're doing a good job so far...
And you got it all correctly there, Nicola releases betas to everyone, and then he makes the big bucks selling the release to nobody.

Whats up with ppl who ask for playing games for free in Mame-betas, that need to accomplish better emulation? The developers of this and many other emulators have jobs and a life. So dont bother them if they took their spare time to give us programs that we can use for free, they do a great job by programming the emus.

In my opinion Jose's site is one of the best, if not the best emulation site on the web. Where else can you get news, rumors and a massive amount of roms.
As for MAME, It supports a mind blowing number of games with good quality overall. As computers continually get faster and cheaper optimization is'nt going to matter that much. I think MAME is an incredible emulator from some very talented people.
As long as I have a computer MAME will be running on it.

Personally I am also disappointed by the performance of many games in MAME, but Piolo you should not complain too much about the flaws it carries. MAME is the result of a lot of hard work by many people, and it is free! They don't necessarily get paid for doing this. I would like to see them improve the quality of emulation in most of their games though. I'd take that over any new additions to the MAME library for a year! Soooo many games need optimization and that should really be their focus since they already have pretty much every memorable arcade game. Let's give them credit for their huge accomplishments though.
Raine, on the other hand needs only one thing very badly: sound support for F3 games. I love Raine so much, and those are the best games it emulates. I'm very excited about playing Darius Gaiden, Elevator Action 2, and Dogyuun with sound. Speaking of Dogyuun, has everyone played that? It's a title that's easy to overlook but the game ROCKS! Hardcore vertical shooter with seriously badass weapons!!! JoseQ I know you must love this one.

It's the obscure games that haven't been emulated yet that I'm worried about. I'd hate for them to be forgotten just because they weren't as "memorable."

Doggy is not F3, it is a Toaplan 92 type board with encryption protected sound code.

My Friend, It is possible you will see Golden Axe : Revenge Of Death Adder (or 2) on the System 32 Emu, which has been put on hold because the author has other things to look to like, say, his girlfriend. Thanks for the tip iVilDeD. If MAMEDEV picks up on it, which they might, you're prayers may be answered. Even though sound is a must in emulators, cracking the encryption routines may be a bit hard to do. We know that Sardu (Bloodlust) was able to emulate the Qsound Virtual Audio chip(s) in Callus. But emulating DCS, DCS-2, and simular systems will take some time. If Callus was open source, this could help out some potential CPS-2 projects and would be benificial to the CPS-2 Shock Decryption Team. Speaking of which...

>and tower of doom,alienvspredator

You mentioned these. Since they are on CPS-2 hardware (Interesting Setup in the design), it will be awhile before you see them. I will agree with you by wanting to see D&D Tower Of Doom emulated. Used to play it in College. But let the decryption get cracked and we'll be able to slay the dragons again. Also remember two things.

1. The CPS-2 hardware was designed to prevent bootlegs, not emulations. Recall the many SF2 hacks that came about and there was a bootleg of Final Fight.

2. There was once a promising emu Kalled Kallus 2 which Kaused such an uproar when exposed as a Kredited FAKE. Relax it will Kome.

The QSound decryption is already done in mame (and has been for a while). See machine/kabuki.c.

Well sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I work full time, not to mention being married, and running a web hosting business. Do you see other sites posting MAME, ROMs & Screenshots all in the same day? I missed last MAME release because I took the weekend off. First time I do that in more than a year.

>mame sucks raine in the next release?

It seems like it will emulate a good number of games Raine emulates. Please note that I specified that it won't happen soon. Richard Bush's motivation comes from emulating games that are not yet motivated, so this may trigger a whole slew of fresh & new games for Raine soon.

>raine is ended?

Doubtful.

>and m92 where's it
>the games emulates in the current mame
>crashed and aren't playable

Nao decided to contribute to MAME directly.

>why nicola salmoira release a bug's games(please joseq if you can stop it on this,if a game don't be emulated well trash it and put another games fully compatible with your emulators ok nicola?

Nicola posted the drivers developed by Nao whom is the actual M92 author. I don't think there's anything to blame Nicola since as Steveir said, these are beta releases. And even then, these are free releases. I wouldn't accept a drop of complains from something I'm giving away freely. I would however, expect lots of gratitude.

>give much better quality to your site and make better speed of your modems

The speed problem may be because you're in Italy, and the EuroLink may be flooded at the times you're browsing. Remember that your early night, is our noon which is prime time for US browsing. Try browsing in your early morning, should be fast.

EmuViews is connected to the net on a 10Mbps port which in order goes to an OC3 line (155Mbps). I
have also opted to shorten the amount of ROMs available instead of having them all there and limit their speed. So speed should be fine at least in the continental USA. I get downloads at home at over 50K/s, so no complains there...

I am sure Raine won't finish simply because MAME includes some of the games already emulated by Raine. The beauty of Raine is that the team go for rarer games and games not yet emulated (I admit mostly Taito..but who cares Raine rules!).

>and m92 where's it

OK so which games crash? I find the m92 games to run without sound and OK on my Cyrix. Its nice to see them included with or without sound :)

Thats the idea of the betas! Its not a 100% working version....if you want that wait till the final release! The reason they're in is IMO so ppl can see the status of the drivers and to inspire ppl with C knowledge to help perfect them!
