Hey, actually Atari released Galaga '88 in the US. =)

But yeah, the essence of these classics really doesn't translate well to a mediocre polygon engine... they all seem to especially miss the balance of gameplay and precise control over the character.

PS Don't forget Galaga 84. ;)

Have played Hasbro's "improvements"
of the classics. They suck.

Namco is the only one who knows
how to do Galaga properly!

I agree completely there. I went out and bought copies of Centipede 3D, Tempest 2000 PC, and downloaded the new Pong demo, and MAN was I disappointed with each one of them!

Especially Tempest 2000 - I had been expecting a really cool techno game, but instead I got a game whose graphics are blocky 320x200, the "polygons" are just rotated on the screen (the shooter doesn't even crawl - it just spins), the sound effects don't work in a DOS box and they sound HORRID in pure DOS (Their idea of a challenging bonus round is to fly through these rings, scoring tons of points, along with hearing this pathetic "Yes!" every time you do...) I could go on and on. Would much rather play the classic Tempest any day.

I was actually just as disappointed with the Sinistar 3D remake as well, though a different company released that. These games just aren't the same when they're modernized.

To play devil's advocate, I'll believe it when I see it. Galaga '88 was a great remake (I should probably review that one), but it was still 2D, so they could preserve the original gameplay while giving it a whole new look and feel. Let's wait and see what they actually put out.

I do hope, though, that Hasbro doesn't screw it up like they did the games I outlined above.

Well,

Franz, I will agree with you on that. However, I should point out that since Hasbro has the U.S. rights to NAMCO's properties, I'm Sorry, but they can do anything they want to with Galaga. So Tough. They own Atari too so don't forget. And remember, if you think the Hasbro Games Suck, don't play them. GEEZ!

I wasn't aware that Atari had anything to do with Galaga. Wasn't that game done by Namco? Or was it a licensed game?

Also, how many Galaga remakes and sequels have there been? I'm aware of:

  • Galaga
  • GaPlus/Galaga3
  • Galaga '88
  • Galaga Remix (in the classics collections

Wonder if there are others as well?

Hasbro has U.S. rights to Namco's games.
