ZSNES 0.985! - November 16,1999 by JoseQ
Well, what do I know, there is a new ZSNES release! You can download version 0.985 from the Emulator Download Page (thanks to Retrogames for the file). ZSNES is one of the most popular SNESemulator and also one of (if not the) fastest emulatorsof that kind. There's a whole bunch of new features inthis release that will make you click on the link to download before you finish reading through. And here's the list directly from the whatsnew.txt file:

  • Added some more speedups to the SA-1
  • SA-1: Fixed a branch problem with the BRL instruction
  • Implemented Save Ram support into netplay. Thanks toThe Minder for help testing this!
  • Added a hack to get Mario Paint trainered rom with the trainerremoved to work with the snes mouse instead of the keyboard/joystick
  • Prevented Joystick Keys/Buttons to be selected as the diagonalkeys in the GUI
  • Fixed some crashing problems with the Modem Mode
  • Implemented a key combination editor in the GUI
  • Sped up V-Sync
  • Fixed an SA-1 memory map bug! Fixes DBZ:HD.
  • Added an small speed hack for DBZ:HD
  • Implemented SA-1 Super MMC
  • Finally, after many, many hours of hacking. Figured outwhat caused the odd noise sounds! So far, simulated noiseis implemented since the true nature of how this noiseis produced is unknown so it will sound somewhat off comparedto the original sounds. There is also a slight chance thatsome sounds will become noise incorrectly and vice versa.
  • Fixed up Pitch Modulation
  • Fixed SNES Mouse/Super Scope support when Pl3/4 as Pl1/2 optionis enabled
  • ADSR/GAIN overhaul (Sound DSP) :
  • Fixed several GAIN bugs
  • Implemented Increase Bentline/Decrease Exp GAIN modes properly
  • Rewrote Decay/Sustain modes in ADSR
  • Fixed a restarting ADSR bug
  • Removed Sound Buffering. I don't think it's worth losing thequality of the sound for a small amount of speed boost.
  • Implemented an option to disable the Noise Simulation for thosegames that aren't working properly because of it
  • Implemented Triple Buffering. You can enable this through theVideo Options in the GUI. Unfortunately, Triple Bufferingwon't work with 2xSaI/Super Eagle engine at the moment since theyrely on the previous screen for updating nor will it workproperly with high resolution games in the old gfx engine. Thanks to GreenImp for patiently helping through testing!
  • Implemented Full Screen Interpolation. Only works on MMX CPU'sat the moment.
  • Implemented Cheat Code Reflector (See Guinotes.txt for details)
  • Any proper VESA 2 error messages now doesn't exit the programwhen in the GUI but instead display the error message in abox and allows the user to continue.
  • Thanks to Daniel for lending me his copier which helped me hack theSNES Sound Noise/ADSR stuff!

    Enjoy!

One day I decided to load up the latest version of Snes9x WIN, which I assumed was slower than zsnes, which gives me a TINY bit of choppiness with a p2450, and loaded up final fantasy 6 and it ran smoother than zsnes! there was no slowdown and it was perfect 60fps(i had the 3DFX bilinear filtering on).. i was just wondering if anyone else had the same results

The 3DFX drawing routines (in addition to the bilinear filtering) may be a bit faster than the 2D equivalents on your particular video card. I know for me, Snes9X has ALWAYS been very slow and unstable, and certainly ZSNES has been a lot better. (I'm currently running the two emulators on a Celeron 400A running at 500 MHz, with a RivaTNT card and a Voodoo2 12MB.)

The latest rev of ZSNES seems a little slower overall than previous releases, but seems to fix a few annoying little problems in a couple of the games I like to play. By comparison, Snes9X always leaves me with at least 1 frameskip, usually 2. This is with the latest drivers for all my hardware installed, and it doesn't seem to matter which mode I use or how I have other options configured.

Weird... I tried the new ZSNES and found it to run just like the old one (i.e. faster and smoother than SNES9xw).

One really weird thing I noticed with this new release, though -- my old Square savefiles have all been obliterated! Even with the .srm files present, ZSNES treats them as if the game had never been saved. What's even weirder is that when I run the game from SNES9x, it _still_ recognizes my old savefiles, even after I save a game in ZSNES (which should have overwritten the .srm file)! Any clues as to why this is? I kinda liked being able to switch back and forth between the two emulators as I saw fit...
