AMAME, PMAME Updated! - November 16,1999 by JoseQ
I would like to take this opportunity to help clear some details up from the latest changes to the MAME license. First, let me point you to MAME World, where the updated versions of both AMAME and PMAME are residing. These two are not in any way addressedby the MAME license, since they have letters in their nameto differentiate them from MAME, thus users will not beconfused thinking they may have the officially supportedand original MAME while having an unauthorized derivativewhich carries some sort of punctuation like a '.' or '!' totry to make a difference. As I view it, there were two points to the license change:

  • The first one would be that if you're going to compile your own version of MAME, you must somehow make sure that you let your users know that they're not getting the official release from MAMEDEV. A simple '.' or '!' can bemistakengly understood as punctuation rather than differentiation. For example, if you say "Click here to download MAME!", users could easily be misguided to think they're getting MAME which is an exciting download.
  • Secondly, they also want to further explain what wouldbe considered as derivative works from MAME. And they explain that trivial things which go against the spirit ofthe project, such as enabling games that were disabled bythe team, would not be considered a derivative work.

However, it is my opinion that the whole purpose ofthe license is best explained in the first few sentences. Ifyou have something to contribute, you can always submit themto the MAME team, just like many now MAMEDEVs have done. And if it doesn't get implemented, there will probably begood reasoning why it isn't. I know this is a very controversial topic by reading what you guys have posted inthe MAME release article, this is just my take on the subject and just wanted to make clear that AMAME and PMAMEdo not fall under those changes, they're still OK.

I've tried 3 versions of PMAME in my Pentium 233mmx and could't see any difference of the original MAME. The versions: pmame 035b3, 035b8 and the 035rc1. Some of these version shown bugs on the button configuration in gamepads. Waste of time, after all...

On my P133 it (PMAME) makes quite a difference. Probably the faster your processor, the less difference it will make.

    From:
JoseQ, well put on how things tend to creep into the spirit of the program itself. It's impossible for the license to touch every last thing that someone can do to in theory, make their work a derivative one, but the spirit of such a license is usually clear and simple logic. It's a shame that the dev's feel they have to put more and more strict rules protecting it from certain derivative actions, but then again, we're also spoiled. MAME's been around for many years now, and maybe we're all just a little spoiled at what we have.
