The Rumor Mill - December 01,1999 by JoseQ
Here it is, what many of you have been asking me for. I may have raised expectations too much with my posting on Monday, but nevertheless, I do have reports from lands thathave been awful quiet for many months, that's why I think you'll like the news. So without further ado, let's open the bag'o'rumors and see what's in it for this edition.
So let's start with something that sort of vanishedin mid air while I was rumoring about it for a while. And that topic is HiVE. I have received reports from trustworthy sources, indicating that the emulator is verymuch alive, and has been on the shop being worked on forquite some time lately. What should you expect from thenew work? More games, a cleaned up user Interface, andincredibly enough, more speed. I know the speedups at leastexcite my dad, who still plays on a Pentium 75. The obviousnext question is when? My sources tell me that this weekmight be the week HiVE gets updated, let's hope that itdoes happen soon.
Have you heard about an upcoming contest called the 'Classic Gaming Gauntlet'? I've been given a sneakpeek at what's coming and I must say it's going to bevery exciting. Lots of prizes, lot's of fun, and best ofall, you won't have to spend 3 days in a row playing Pac-Man non-stop to win. Yup, it will be other games that youwill have to play for days. Nah, I'm kidding; the truthis you will have puzzles and challenges to complete toend up winning some very cool prizes. I must say I willdefinitely participate, so good luck, and may the bestman win. I hear the details will be unveiled this week, sostay tuned.
Well it seems that December 15th is going to be one major date. Magic Engine will be updated, the secret projectbeing mentioned at Emulation Camp will be unveiled, andsomething else will happen. Remember that I mentioned abouta month or more ago that one of the major sites will be changing helms, well, they have also decided to use December 15th, as the date that it will happen. That seemslike it will be one major day in Emulation News, so lookforward to it.
I'm sad to report though that while earlier rumors indicated there might have been a cabinet giveaway by Christmas, this will not be the case. Support for the site hasn't been too great lately, so I won't be able to get it for you this soon. It may be the case for the two yearAnniversary which happens in the second quarter of next year. Hopefully support will be better by then. There will still be monthly Hot Rods though.
Ok, more interesting rumors regarding emulators thathave been on hold for too long... Sparcade... Yes people,it seems Sparcade has reached the packaging assembly line, and after some finishing touches, closing the documentationand other minor things, it will be released. However, giventhe time the author has available, this may not be done asquickly as it sounds, but I would expect Dave Spicer tobeat Santa with his present. We're all looking forwardto that previously unemulated game, and remember that I saidit will be a double surprise (although this may not mean it's twice as good)
Thinking about other Emulators I can't seem to find anything but reports that say MAME will be updated verysoon, and with titles like Turbo and Pole Position, it'sgoing to be a big one. Some of you may be thinking thatafter these two, there is no other classic game left tobe emulated? I would think again about that statement andvisit sites with lists of unemulated games, and believe me,those lists are quite lengthy. After Burner and Hard Drivin'are but a few of those. I bet that even with the preliminaryAfter Burner driver in the S16 source, Hard Drivin will makeit first...
Well I guess that's all I can say for now. There's plenty to look forward before Christmas in the form of atleast three major Arcade Emulator releases, and I believethat there will be more than that. More to come in the nextRumor Mill. Thanks for reading!

Hey Jose and the gang!

I am extremely new at this, but I will try to make it simple.

How do I play Tetris for the mame? :)

I downloaded mame, and downloaded tetris. When I do the command to start tetris it says bin file, rom files, etc. are missing. Do I need sounds, images files and other stuff to put in the other directorys? If someone could give me a crash course in starting tetris, I would greatly appreciate your kindness and ability to help my pursuit of nirvana. Thanks!

Hey fellow gaming enthusiasts, I am looking for a patch for Metal Slug 2 that enables the 'blood' factor into the game. I know it exsists, but I can't remember where I saw it. The Neo Geo site is down, so that's out...

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, its obvious the previously unemulated game isnt simply anouther game. Im assuming the "double" part of it is a new piece of hardware that has has never been emulated before? But what could that be? Well, I know Dave Spicer likes his konami games alot, so maybe its the newer Konami Hardware for games like Gradius 3 and Salamander 2.
Thats my most realistic guess...... it aint cps2, sega 32, or anything like that (no matter how much i wish it was)

With the partial revealing of my secret project, I have decided to trickle out some minor bits of information and clues in the next 2-3 months till the preview. The next clue is:

If you are thinking the obvious, then you are wrong. Expand your mind and look both in and outside the box.

Coincidentally if you do guess it, email me at the link above.

Hmm... this makes me think that the aforementioned secret project is some sort of custom-built piece of hardware dedicated to the emulation community. This could be a computer built for gaming, a cabinet, a licensing solution perhaps... am I close?

No truxton 2 review? Hmm, yet when you play the game in Raine, you don't run a game called Truxton 2. I bet if you LOOKED to see the name of the game you select, you'd notice it is called something else in Japenese. Sure enough, it is reviewed.

Actually, I'd never even seen init's request for this game. (I don't even know what it is, actually!)

As for me calling init a troll (as I said in a private e-mail to him as well), I said that because I strongly disagree with his use of language when expressing his opinions - not the opinions themselves. Just thought I'd set the record straight.

As far as I know, there will be no SegaCD emulators released on the 15 december.

I'm not sure this attitude will get us any help. =)

We do owe ROMList a great thanks for all they've done... thanks to them we have a ton of awesome games to relive. :)

I must admit the Grid Seeker / Euro Champ ROM unavailability has baffled quite a few people. ROMS almost always appear after a new emulator release, the only times I can recall them being witheld is 1) when we've had some new games, like kof99, although that was leaked :p, and 2) trogp, where the provider was afraid of legal action since it's release coincided with the IDSA's shutdown of both Daves Classics and Retrogames ROM archives. Since Grid Seeker / Euro Champ don't seem to fit into these categories, no one can seem to be able to figure out what's going on with the mysterious witholding! :)

Hopefully they'll be released soon, I hear lots of awesome things about Grid Seeker. ;)

funny you should try to give me a reality check. fact is, romlist owes the community if they like the community. they dont owe a llama like me anything, but they owe everyone who has made an emu, or released roms in the past w/o making a big stink about it. so go tell them that their fun they get outta all there emus is FREE, and that they should feel thankfull, and show thx whenever its in their power. its in their power to do so, and by not releasing their romset, they are basically bringing down everyone else who has generously given(no strings attactched) to the emu scene. if everyone did what they are doing, emu would really suck.

The reason they are not available, is because they have not been released by the dumpers. I don't know what reasons they have to hold them, but it may be distribution difficulties. You probably know that when ROMLIST releases a ROM it gets downloaded an awful lot, so they need good reliable places to put those ROMs. Previously they would allow everyone to have them even before release, I don't really know why they changed their policy. I'm not sure if all those un-released ROMs were dumped by ROMLIST though, so don't blame it all on them.

well i dont want to hurt your faith in romlist or anything, but i dont buy the distribution arguement. seems to me that there are planety of ppl including yourself who would host the files, and if romlist was interested, or gratious enough, they could have given all the top rom sites their copies. then the mass duplication of the release would be widespread and not be a bandwidth hog one iotta to romlist. i wasnt sure who dumped gridseeker when i first posted, and i might not have been so rude in my original post about politics etc had i know it was romlist, however: it IS some cry for attention, political move or similiar. i think they want us all to know "where it came from".... and they have succeeded.
