MAMEnet News - July 09,1998 by JoseQ
The MAMEnet page has been updated withnews about the progress on this exciting development. Apparentlythey're also working on save game functionality for MAME. They havealso been working on "asynchronous network communication forchat-mode and in-game joining in preparation for a beta release".They have also taken the time to explain why playing through Dial-Upwill not work on MAME.
The Main Reason is that MAME reads the input everytime it drawsa frame, and for 60FPS that means one frame every 16ms. Now if you canget one bit of data in 16ms from your house to your ISP you have oneheck of a connection. For those Quake2 players, you know that you usuallyget a 200ms delay on your game and even with player prediction functionalityincluding in Quake that sometimes is too much. MAME input is no differentthan Quake in that sense. If you play over a LAN you'll get good gameplay.
So I recommend you take a trip to Onsale Networking Auctions Areaand bid for the SVEC package they have. It usually goes for $49plus shipping and it includes a 5 port Hub, and two Network Cardswhich is a pretty good deal and everything you need to play with MAMEnet.
