Decide the future of Raine! - February 03,2000 by JoseQ
Well, we may not be able to decide the future of Raine, but perhaps we might be of some influence. I've setup a new pollat The Views where you can make a selectionor where you would like to see Raine going (or staying). Please remember this is not about posting what you thinkwill happen, but what you would like to see happeningto Raine. Let's make a petition out of it. If enough peoplevote, perhaps Richard might make a decision. Vote on!

One Article Up: MAME 0.36 Beta 16!

Subject: Raine is the best
From:
this emulator is in many aspects, WAY better than MAME is.
I think that the effort and the invaluable treasure that this emulator is,
should not be discontinued, since here are people who have been in the scene for years
and we still have to see something better to come. great projects, as will always say, always need a team to help...
because eventually we all need help.
I tell to Richard GO on and reprogram your time and schedules.. and open up. but in no way this fascinating and excellent project should be terminated, and I believe that I speak in the name of many
old emu followers. Time many times is a very restraining issue... when it comes to that, and the leader can't go on, then it may be time to decide what is your life plan... and if your great project, that so many enjoy (including my wife and sister)
can't be followed anymore, then it may be time to pass the leadership to somebody who can deal with the responsibilities of it. I bet that people may be willing to even buy Raine, if that comes to that point... but we all believe that these great artworks should be kept free,
and therefore, Richard might make a wonderful and fantastic contribution to the world (yes, to the world) by sharing his masterwork, in the case that he does not want to go on with it anymore.
such a fantastic work as the one he has done with such care and dedication, cannot be left to die, because the author is a very busy businessman... or whatever. Richard will be always the creator of this work of art... and I believe that as the ones who have had to leave this world,
he will be always welcome whenever he wishes to contribute to the whole... that is what we all are. a Whole. so his work should be, in the case that he can't go on because his strength is not enough... as the Village People said: "NO one does it all by himself"...

perhaps it might be time for Richard to allow others to help him.
ask Nicola Salmoria and all the Mame Team... who also respect your emulator, and see in it a source of inspiration, in their own words. Almost everyone who knows of Raine agrees in that this spirit of excellence and perfection, brings also the same feelings and spirit for a better work...
everywhere.

That is his work... I say let's not allow it to die.
your Spirit will always live on, Richard...
so don't kill it.
now it is your choice... a generous one, if that is of the case.
we all recognize your highly qualified work.. and we all admire it, despite the words of most people who cannot understand why the emulation works are just works of Art. a Treasure to be preserved.
So we all recognize it... Please don't give up, Richard, and if you can't go on... allow the world to share your gift to it.
and finally... just state what you want before you open it to everyone... a source of inspiration whould be Linus Torvalds, who I encourage you to read about... with Linux.
even not speaking about a OS, we speak about something that comes from our same world. imagine a world filled with a group of people who lives in fascination of the works of the mind... the games, stories
of adventure and distant worlds and personalities... that you have allowed us to live again... or for the first time.
We, all that people who lives on, we all also live a new story of fantasy and happiness.. because of you.
so your gift is a gift to the soul of all of us... and we have enjoyed many hours of dreams and happiness... because of your work.
Don't take it away... and if possible, allow the world to continue enjoying it.. forever, friend of ours.

Best regards...
From just One among the crowd of admirers of your work...
who appreciates a work well done.

Whatever you do in life.. be sure that it will be richly rewarded...
just ask for the price, for it shall be granted to you.
Generosity, is something that is priceless... and that makes your name shine forever in the books and in the statues that remind us of a
great man who lived in this world, and who made it a better place to live in, because of your work.

I wish you the best... and if all is just a need of something... ask, always ask.
for a man like you... always someone will give you help, no doubt about it...
I will...

best wishes
J. Avenger

If the guy can't be arsed with it let him stop - man you people are nothing but a bunch of parasites. I am sure that if this Richard guy had any shred of integrity about himself then he would be sick to the stomach of all this brown-nosing/arse-kissing crap.

Maybe he's not actually going to stop the project, maybe he's just saying to you all 'beg me', so what does that make you all.

Any way the guys a wanker any way for not releasing the source for others to use, and if I saw him in the street I wouldn't give him the time of day.

I do play Raine only for Chase HQ, but that doesn't make me a hippocrit. Who gives a sh!t - if it's there play it - if it's not you can't.

Seems like most of the people in the Emulation scene are more bothered in the news (ie soap-opera) than actually playing the games.

Sad. Very Sad.

UK-OK.
Over and Out.

I'm happy for you oh wise one. You get to play CHase HQ for free. I guess the rest of "losers" who like to relive history should give up saying how wonderful we think Raine is and how we wish that it could continue. Also, I guess us "losers and whiners" should not thank Richard Bush for the wonderful job he's done in creating the best emulator in existence.

Crawl back in your hole and we'll pull you out when we want your opinion.

Excuse me while I happily wipe the brown off my nose.

Nuff said....

I'm sure that's a very friendly thing to say...

Would you like it if your friends said that about you?

"If UK-OK is there good, if not, f!ck it, we only hang out with him sometimes".

How about people saying that about something you've worked on for years with no compensation whatsoever?

I wouldn't call saying thanks, brown nosing. I guess you just don't have that word in your dictionary.

It would be nice if the source code could possibly be released? Thanks to raine i was able to play some of my favorite arcade games i havent played in years (Wrestlefest baby!) And it would be nice to actually use my gamepad (Gravis Exterminator) w/ it instead of the keyboard (I hate sharing a keyboard w/ a second player) And maybe a Windows port w/ hardware acceleration. But eitherway thanks for bringing us Raine!

If you have the Gravis Exterminator, use the Keyset Editor to create a Raine keyboard template--it'll let you assign keys to the digital d-pad directions as well as the buttons. I use it that way all the time for emus that don't have joystick emulation worked out yet ^_^

Subject: The reign of RAINE MUST continue
From:
Raine was the 1st emulator I was exposed
to. There's no way I wanna see it end
yet. What Richard did when he first made
RAINE was put together a small snowball.
Then he let it roll off a high mountain
and it grew as more people got caught
up, until it was like a boulder of ice.
We must realize there's no stopping it
now. Like any obstacle in front of a
huge ice ball will be destroyed, so will
this problem. Lets hope Richard sees it
this way!!

Roll it into Mame. Callus, Rage, System 16, Shark were nice and did what they set out to. When the project outlives its interest to the authors, release the source or bring it into Mame so it can be enjoyed on multiple platforms.

Don't you mean 'maim it'?

I hate to say it, but MAME's a hydra, an unwieldy beast with too many heads at this point. It may do lots of things, but it generally doesn't do any of them quite as well as more focused emus dedicated specifically to a platform or narrow range of platforms. If further development of RAINE were folded into MAME, it would probably kill any desire on Richard's part to return to the project eventually, and further developments wouldn't be on par with what we see in RAINE now.

In short, whatever Richard decides to do, I'd hate to see RAINE assimilated by the Borg Collective that we call MAME.

(And yes, I know I'm going to draw flames for this, but I'm being honest here.)

Subject: my thoughts...
From:
From what I have heard, which may or may not be correct, one of the big reasons Raine was "discountinued" was that Richard B. had a lack of time to work on the project. I know Richard M. has also done some excellent work in Raine (Bubble Bobble, etc) and I think he would be an ideal person to take over but that is not my choice to make.

Further, I think if they continue under someone else's leadership or the project remains in its current status they should release the source code. If people had access to the source maybe they would be able to solve some of the problems with the current emulation such as the missing Ensoniq information and the 3D hardware for the AIR system games (drool). But I think that is just a dream...

I already said how good are the specialized emulators. Mame is excellent, but specific emulator offers a wider gamma of games, and advance even more. Please don´t give up, there´s too much to do and too less to execute.

I live for shooters, that's what makes this emu so awesome. Raine has allowed us to appreciate games that we may have never seen if it wasn't for they're efforts. I would like to see them continue Raine. . I am sure there are a ton of shooters left to emulate, and Raine does it best.

Raine has come this far. It would be foolish to end it here. Open soure might be the way to go. Their work will always be remembered, but if it goes open soure it will be remebered that much more. Hope the creator's of raine make a wise choice.

What a great job you've done Richard. I've been around emulation for over 2 years now and Raine is one of my favorite. Easy to use and plays games that otherwise would be unemulated. Any new releases are a welcome sight. Some of us appreciate any updates/releases, no matter what stage they may be in, and appreciate your hard work for little if no compensation. I hope you would continue Raine, and respect any decision you make on the future of this emu, and wish you good luck.

There comes a time in life when you realise that emulator programming isn't everything you wish to have in your life. Eventually you end up with a desire to make the games yourself.

And you can't really force anyone to release sourcecode to the public. Sometimes it just isn't created that way.

SCI, top landing, top speed, etc...
These games have no chance to be run on an other emulator, so raine must be finished... but not by this way.
