Raine is Dead? - February 23,2000 by JoseQ
It seems it's now official. The Official Raine Home Page bears the line "RAINE IS DEAD" which I would take as the end of this wonderful emulator. I can only wish to know more about this, and actually why the abrupt change as I had understood it, it was going to continue slowly. Until I found out more information, that's all that I amgoing to say as I don't want to speculate on what could have happened. It just seems kind of sudden to me given the talks that I have had with Richard in recent times. Maybe it's a surprise, maybe it's really the end. It just seems rather hard to believe, that's all.

if it weren't a closed-source program.

Since it's light on the pre-1985 games I don't care much anyway, but it's a shame to see another emulator go the way of the dodo because the author didn't believe in distributing source.

Just remember this the next time you download the latest and greatest new emu: closed-source emulators ALWAYS die.

May JoseQ has obtained a wrong information...but I sadly believe thatīs true.

Man, I can`t believe that the BEST EMU is DEAD. RAINE ruled the scene. I mean, no other emu was that functional and configurable as RAINE.
The good is never for ever, damn.
This KILLS our memories of good old games, left in the shadow of lame emus like MAME.
Is there hope, at least ???
Or is it like in Yugoslavia, all goin down...

This is definately sad news. Richard had one of the best Emulators out there. After viewing the last release, it was evident that Richard had some great games on the horizon of being emulated. Alas Poor York, I knew him. Stopping an Emulator is almost like putting your own child to death. Whenever a new release came about I loved getting Wet with a downpour of raine. My best wishes to Richard and the rest of the Raine Team.

Only Love Can Bring The Raine,
That makes you yearn to the skies.
Only Love Can Bring The Raine,
That Falls Like Tears From On High.
LOVE RAINE O'ER ME!
LOVE RAINE O'ER ME!

Raine is dead? Lamers and Mamers? all seems very criptic to me.
It would be nice to have an official comment from the Raine team.
who are the Mamers (MAME?) and lamers (Raine users who complain?)
I for one would like to know
P.S. Raine still rules

From:
First I would like to address the whole Richard got a job thread: unless he has recieved a different job/promotion he previously had a job as a commerical game developer and was going to continue to work on it in his spare time. With knowing these facts I find it hard to believe that this would be the sudden reason for the change of direction.

Like some other people have mentioned I thought this sounded a lot like a hack and considering at least one other emulation site (Zophar's) was definately hacked around the same time it is possible but sure is a strange page for a hacker to post.

I think it is sad if this is how things end since it was seemingly like we were getting close to another improvement in the F3 driver to possible fix things like the transprancies, oh well I am sure someone else will emulate F3 before long, maybe it is already real close in Mame and that is why Raine was ended. Who knows for sure...

Raine is a very good emulator, which I like Much better then Mame. I still appreciate Mame to the fullest degreee of respect, Mame is one of the resons why i am investing big $$ in emulation (one day). If it wasnt for Mame and its games then i would never know classic gaming for what it is, but raine emulates specific boards and that brings a quality that defines its reputation.

Ok I don't belive it was a hack. Cause after I read the first post on Retrogames
I immediately jumped on IRC. I rattled a few cages but my point is clear. If you are tired
of coding just say so. No one will be mad cause I know there is a lot of work involved in the coding
of an emulator. But to point fingers and blame folks to me is actin' like a little bitch. Somebody told me I need to shut up because
I don't know the whole story. But what is there to know? I am in the service business as well.
Damn near every DJ in my city has borrowed music from me to make their mix taped & CD's do you think DJ Infinity got so much as
a shout out or thank you? Hell naw! If I let haters and thankless people stop me I would have hung up my mixer a long time ago.
So if you want to kill you emulator by all means do so it's your right but don't whine, point fingers and
blame others. And last but not least don't hate. Thanks for all the games Raine you will be missed but don't go out like suckers.

Personally, I'm tired of this. No, coding an emulator, fixing bugs
and maintaining it isn't easy work & it lacks any real
rewards. But, make a damned decision. You want to give
up a project, say so, then do so. You aren't sure if you want
to give it up, say that as well. We are all wasting valuable
time with the 'it's dead', it's alive' rumours back and forth.
I've begun to think those coding emu's do this out of some
sort of sick need for attention. 'Check out all of these spiffy
new features I'm planning for the next release!" is almost always
followed by "I'm not updating anymore". Maybe coding emu's brings
about mental illness or something.

Might have to agree. Why else would katharsis say so-called "scene"'s downfall. Also, if it was really dead why is the regular page still up at www.rainemu.com/index2.html like Buzz said. Must be a hack. I'm sure they would have dumped all those games recently to just kill it off. If it was a hack whoever did it messed with a lot of crap, and could have pissed off Richard and hurt the Raine scene. Tean Japump has dumped too many games (all for Raine) for it to be killed off.

I heard from another site that there is a rumor that the regular Raine might be discontinued and that a Windows version may start, but this is just a rumor. I first heard this from katharsis (from the geoshock site) saying:

A sad day ... Raine is dead. The Rainbow Islands Emulator died a tragic death after a short time between pain and hope ... that's only another sign of the so-called "scene"'s downfall.

the heh pics are still up, so that's all I know for now.

Wild speculation from Atila. It makes no sense that the RAINE team would go out of their way to flame MAME users and lamers and then develop RAINE on a new platform which be more work than the DOS one.

That's what I thought also. How can they make a windows Raine when that would just take more time to make it and to get it working correctly. Very unlikely. Strange thing is a lot of games for it have been dumped lately. Full Throttle, Volfied, Ring Rage, Light Bringer, Aqua Jack, Riding Fighter, etc. Maybe the team is being bugged by too many questions and will leave the page like that until the next Raine is ready if they will coninue? Don't know.
