MAME 0.36 Final! - March 21,2000 by JoseQ
MAME 0.36 Final has been released by Nicola and it's already available for download from the Emulator Download Page! Changes in the whatsnew.txt file include the High-Score support which is now done by the external hiscore.dat file, the -depth option now supports 8, 16 or 'auto' option which works according to the game, and the -verifysamples which will not work correctly for some games. Fixes in graphics includes the tiles in some CPS1 games, text colors in "Legend of Kage", among MANY other fixes. The list of 'new or improved' sound is equally as long, so I'm going to leave it to you to browse through it. I will be spending some time fixing all the ROMs available for MAME and making them compatible with MAME 0.36 final. I'll post a news article once that happens (it'll be a while). Enjoy!

One Article Up: SNEeSe 0.43 is out!

Funny, nothing mentioned on the MAME WIP page. Sounds like a hoax, i'll believe it when I see it. Anyway if they actually do finally emualte Hard Drivin it will likely be painfully slow.

Subject: Galaga
From:
The ship explosion sound in mame 0.36
final seems broken. This is one of
the few games I play in mame and it often
has problems when a new version comes out.
Can anyone recommend a version of mame where galaga works right.
Thanks!

Galaga's ship sounds had always worked right for me in all the betas - I haven't had a chance to play with the final yet, though. =/

The one thing I noticed that has never sounded right in Galaga, though, is the sound produced when your ship is captured - in the short time where the ship is spinning and moving up toward the alien with the tractor beam, and the tractor beam is being retracted, the game makes this repetitive sound that's supposed to be done in multiple, rotating tones. It doesn't do this in MAME - instead, the shots sound funny if you shoot while you're spinning. Minor annoyance, but nothing major.

Two ROMS had their names changed. INTRUDER and ASTLASER have been replaced with SPCLASER and LASER. The clone SPCEWARL is unaffected.

I hope this helps!

Great work, MAME Team! One of the things I'm still avidly awaiting is proper background/color support in Exerion - I really want to see what this game is supposed to look like.

Keep up the great work!

I don't understand the reasoning behind their full and beta releses. Other than bug fixes which seem to happen every release full or beta, I don't see any major changes. Is there some logic to their release schedule that I'm not aware of?

Most fixes go into the RC and Final releases than other betas released. This final release should be pretty much bug free with what is claimed to be supported. Those that have 'preliminary' support, should be considered just like any other beta.

Well, Id certainly be thankful to you if you really fixed all the roms you have to download to work in this release of mame, or even better if you just included a little "update" file, may this be posible?
Anyway, you really have lotsa work to do, buddy.

Does this mean that this is the very last MAME update, or is it just the last .36 update?

Just means that MAME 0.36 FINAL is released. The project is by no means complete (probably never will be.) You can expect 0.37 to come along pretty shortly. =)
