Heads up on the ROMs... - July 31,2000 by JoseQ
Just a 'heads up' to let you guys and gals know that as of midnight, some of the ROMs will be going offline. The reason? The bandwidth usage is too much. While the hits, downloads and bandwidth almost tripled, the clicks (or 'user support') went up by about 20% the first day, and is back to what it was before already; even though the bandwidth usage is still through the roof. While Mortal Kombat 3 (umk3 included) has been downloaded almost 7,000 times, not even 700 clicks were recorded even after combining ALL of the banners stats from the site. I'm sorry, but I have to pull the big ones out for the time being. It was fun riding the wave, but it would cost me some serious bucks to keep them up. So get them while they're available.

I was just wondering if you got your KIAME beta? Someone I know volunteered to host the roms if he got a beta. Talk about bandwidth usage. Time to take out a small loan. : )

Man am I glad to see so few (I count one at the moment) less than encouraging messages on the bottom of this post. I half expected to see a whole heap of flaming... glad I didn't.

Jose, you are somewhat privleged to have access to 12Mbps of bandwidth... and your decision to share any of it with us is a mighty fine one. I'm just sorry that we have decided to take so much of it an not give enuf back in return. :(

There is only one query I have. It relates to a message you posted perhaps around a year ago, in which you asked us to more selectivly click on banners as one of the sponsers was going to withdraw due to continual clicks from the same IP's daily. I know I was guilty of clicking your banners each morning when I got on to see what the news was... and therefore chose a more infrequent banner clicking practice.

Are you now saying that more frequent banner clicking is not a problem... or are you simply suggesting that if you grab a rom make a click... and hoping people won't grab roms daily?

I'd like to support the site more.. and I think the news you provide (without the ROMS) is worthy of support... I just don't want to annoy you sponsers

Granted most of those people guilty of taking these latest roms without clicking on banners probably didn't frequent the site when the post was made but anyway...

Well... I'm not just saying that you should click on every banner you see, but for every download, I guess you could visit a sponsor and see what they have to offer...

On the other hand, the message goes mainly to the population as a whole. I don't expect 100% of the visitors to click, or even 10%. But 0.1% is a bit too low when the average on the net is about ten times that.

If 1 out of 100 people would click on a banner, then EV would be able to cover these and even more ROMs... But with 1/10th of that, then there's not much to cover the bandwidth cost. =(

I think what Jose was refering to a year ago was the people who were clicking on the same banners repeatedly within a few minutes...not the once a day clickers...To follow up my earlier post, I do see your banners now and am therefore clicking. :) Keep up the good work Jose.

From:
Make a seperate banner page, in addition to the banners you already have and sign up for atleast 5 other banner ad programs including the ones you are subscribed to now.

Personally when I download I big rom I click both the banners on your rom downloads page 3 times out of 4. I would not mind going to a seperate banner page and click as many banners as you have. Bandwith is not much of a concern for me. Since only I would estimate a small percentage of your users even click banners (as is true with most the web), this might help especially considering the same are probably clicking your banners over and over again each day because they download and want to continue to be able to download off the FREE service you provide.

While that sounds like a good idea, it's prohibited by all of the banner companies. There has to be some content within the banners, and there can't be more than a number of banners per page for some of them...

Support Emuviews by clicking and at the same time downloading from other sites sometimes as that will ease the load off of emuviews. Also keep in mind that emuviews has mroe than just ROMS to offer, I for one enjoy the rumor mill.. which BTW hasn't happened in a while *nudge JoseQ* ;-)

http://www.mame.dk/ is a great place at least MAME wise for roms.
Most people have no clue how much bandwidth costs, help the guy out and click.

Thanks Jose your site is always my first stop..after napster of course :-)

JoseQ is doing an enormous community service!!!! The least you can do is to click on a couple of banners - it's significantly less painfun than if these sites go away for lack of support.

Is that bandwith dedicated solely to traffic to this site or do you use it for your webhosting service and other pages as well. 12mbps seems a lot for am emulation site.

That's pretty much just for this site... It would be around 10Mbps for this site, since ArcadeHeaven.Com uses 800Kbps...

It's not a lot of bandwidth when you consider the ROM Pages are getting about 80,000 visitors every day for the past few days, and all of them leaving with more than one file. =(

I think alot of sandbagging broadband users with DSL or Cable modems are the problem here. Leeching those huge ROMs in a moment's time and not clicking the banners in return.

I tried to grab MK2 the other night but once I saw how huge it was, I passed. =( I'll be honest and also say that I didn't click a banner either. My connection speed is only 28.8 (yeah, I got a 56K modem but Ameritech's line quality reeks) and I must admit that when MAME got to the point where alot more recent games were supported, I got a bit disenchanted with the whole emulation scene because these newer ROMs are impossible to download at 28.8 (my ISP kicks you after 4 hours online).

I'll click a few banners tonight without snagging anything because I know first hand how it sucks to be in or near the red. This site has been a key visiting place for me for the past 2-3 years maybe and losing it would suck.

I don't even DeathMatch anymore since the advance in broadband access and emulation has always been there for those rotten nights when the LPBs were handing me my arse on Q3 or UT.

Hope everything pans out, JoseQ!
And when DSL/Cable comes to my area (and depending on the price), I know some people on these DM servers are gonna get slapped with a Flak Cannon!! =} And I'm too nice of a guy to beatup on the HPBs...*heh*
