MESS 0.37b5!!! - August 03,2000 by JoseQ
MESS sees the latest DOS changes for a release of 0.37 beta 5! You can download this newest version from the Emulator Download Page. Be sure to note that .inp playback doesn't work in this version. However, there's quite a bunch of new driver submissions as of this version, and I procceed to mention them as listed in the note by Ben, the MESS administrator:

  • NES (pal) [Brad Oliver]
  • Famicom [Brad Oliver]
  • Mattel Aquarius [Paul Daniels]
  • PCW8256, and many clones [Kev Thacker]
  • PCW16 [Kev Thacker]
  • PC 1512, PC1640 [Peter Trauner]
  • Microtan-65 [Juergen Buchmueller]
  • IBM PC [Peter Trauner]
  • TRS80 alt [Juergen Buchmueller]
  • Sharp Mz700, Mz700J [Juergen Buchmueller]
  • Enterprise 128 (with EXOS 2.1) [Stefano Priore]
  • Some ZX Spectrum ROM mods, Spectrum 128 (Spain) [Stefano Priore]
  • Sharp PC1402, PC1350 [Peter Trauner]
  • Atari2600 (preliminary) [Lee Ward]

I'm sure some of you are happy to see your favorite system in there. There's huge changes to the currently existing driver like for example: battery support and improved PPU emulation for the NES driver, and much more. (The list for the NES changes alone is humongous). Be sure to check out the documentation and the official site for the whole ordeal.

I really like MESS - I think it's cool, that I can use a sinlge emulator to play, c64/CPC/Spectrum/Dragon/Apple2/MSX/etc. ect. - no messing about just boot up and play - fair enough, some of the drivers need a little bit of work doing on them, but MESS is a continually evolving project

MESS is the way to go...

Well let's just allow me to add my little two cent.

MESS - is what it's name really meant. Not one da*n, stinking emu on it actually really work. I felt like the whole thing is just a collection of alpha's version.... Until this emu is good at even - just ONE..."ONE" emu out of shtloads of non-working alpha *release* drivers - it might be worth talking news about..

Bull. Most of the MESS drivers work very well indeed. They're not particularly fast, but they do what they're supposed to do.

BTW, where's your multi system emulator? I'd love to try it.

A simple "make" would build anything... but it seems ppl want to turn the things a bit hard :)

If someone knows how to compile this mess (DOS), plz, help me! :-B

Previous versions of mess (and I assume this one too) have to be placed over the top of the MAME source.

So you get the MAME source and extract it ... then you get the MESS source and extract it to the same directory. You will then have a makefile called makefile.mes (or something...) I just reanme this to makefile and then make... I think you can type make -f makefile.mes (or something) but I find it easier to just rename it and type make.

Thank you! I got a binary now :)
There´s some warnings at begining of compilation btw (missing some .h files), but nothing that breaks the compilation.
