The Rumor Mill - August 16,2000 by JoseQ
This goes to show that The Rumor Mill is back in business with a new edition just a week after the latest version. And boy is this Rumor Mill packed with goodies. In the bag I've got exclusive pics from the Sega Model 2 emulator in action, and pics from a Sega CD emulator that's so secret, I can't even tell you who it is that's working on it. Other than that, there's PC Engine rumors, and more! So let's get right on to the Rumors for this week.
Let's cover first some rumors hovering around the EmuViews area... Conversations on the Message Board and EV Chat have recently hovered around topics such as the future of this site come the end of the year. I must say that a week ago it didn't look too good for it after December, but after some research it seems that the future actually looks better than what is currently out. With some luck and patience, EmuViews will be able to deliver all the ROMs available listed, and then some with no worries about bandwidth. I will keep everyone posted, but as it is now, everything but the Capcom ROMs will be online once again in the near future.
Nevertheless, I'm sure you're much more interested in learning about that Virtua Fighter 2 emulator, from which you've seen a picture running around a couple of websites. Well, EmuViews has gotten it's rumor hands on not one, but five new pictures from this emulator in action. Right now however, none of the polygons are being rendered and that's why the pics may look a bit empty. But don't count the emulator out just yet as I am sure it will progress into a full blown application at some point, and we will all be able to play with it throughly. In the meantime, here's some exclusive shots:

Virtua Fighter 2 - 1
Virtua Fighter 2 - 2
Virtua Fighter 2 - 3
Virtua Fighter 2 - 4
Virtua Fighter 2 - 5

As if all emulation development these days were centered on Sega hardware, I have gotten a hold of more pictures that will be of interest to you. These are taken from a Sega CD emulator under development, and quite possibly, the only one at that. Having owned one of these awesome machines, I must say that it definitely enhanced the Sega Genesis gaming experience, and some of the games available for it were simply amazing. While the emulator is still very far from a release, I am very happy to show you these early screenshots / screen grabs directly snatched from the author's machine:

Sega CD 1
Sega CD 2
Sega CD 3
Sega CD 4
Sega CD 5
Sega CD 6

Luckily, not all of my spy birds are devoted to Sega (although I do like Sega a lot!) thus I've gotten reports regarding some new PC Engine developments. Yes, you read correctly. And in this case I don't mean more PC Engine emulators, but rather home-grown games for this popular platform. Thanks in part to HuC, the PC Engine C compiler developed by Zeograd, about half a dozen games will be released very soon. So keep your eyes peeled for those popping out around the net.
Well, I'm going to cut it a bit short once again to save some for next week. While the content for next week is still not on a guaranteed mode, I will let you guys know as soon as it is via Comments on the site, Message board, and of course, the EV Chat, those are features you shouldn't be missing if you want to know what's the latest on the scene. Until next time, Qman signs off!

I've looked into emulating Time Killers. It uses several custom chips and I was unable to find documentation on them. I contacted the folks at Incredible Technologies Inc. and asked them if they could help me out. The guy I talked with seemed like he wanted to help, but since the newer games still used several of the custom chips, he couldn't give out any information.

Ma,, I cant wait till there is a working sega cd emulator. I've kept my a few of my favorite sega cd's because i liked the music, Lunar, and Dark Wizard. I've been dying to play dark wizard on my computer, its my favorite turn based game ever. I wonder if the emulator is new, or an add-on to an existing emu. I hope it is part of gens, because that is by far the best genesis emu out there right now.

Let's see - Richard Mitton's on the case with the Virtua Fighter 2 emulator (Sega Model 2) - hope he gives Model 1 a shot afterwards... I see he's developing in Unix - hope it's portable...

If I were to guess, I'd say that if the Sega CD emulator IS in an existing 32X emulator, then I think it's Tim Meekins' GENSX, not Quintesson's AGES - dunno why, just a guess.

Home-brew PC Emgine games? Cool...

Keep up the cool work, Jose...

(As far as the dynarec Williams emulator, Aaron Giles has essentially confirmed that it wasn't the main TMS34010 that was slowing things down, but the ADSP-2105 that powered the sound in MKII/III and also, the blitter chip displaying the graphics to the emulated screen. I don't think a dynamic recompiling core for that would have helped THAT much. Maybe a little.)

I guess nobody knows about eFX or WindowBlinds... www.customize.org

I just want to see Virtua Racing emulated, so hopefully Model 1 will be easy to emulate because of this!

Well the programmer of AGES seems to be very competitive-like so Maybe since he wasn't the first one out with a 32X emulator, he's trying to be the first at something else.

Whoever said it was Unix? That GUI is a custom one running in DOS :-)

Model 1 is unlikely, tho the SMOG project is doing well with it.

My bad, I forgot to take customizable GUI's into account - I've heard of them, don't use them myself as I'm afraid of crashes it may cause in Win9x. But you said it's for DOS? could you post a link please? :)

Really? There's been no updates from TitoJ in a month. Last I heard he was still settling in to his new job in the States with - er - a BIG software company.

I wonder if the SH-2 debugger is a clue (ie a current 32x emulator)?

The Sega Genesis or SegaCD doesn't have an SH-2 in them.

Ah...the VF2 shots are a great sign of things to come before the end of the year, but for me, my sentiments really want to see the Sega CD emulated. I used to own the system, and I still have a few Sega CDs, Lunar: Silver Star among them. To see that system emulated would be awesome, to say the least. Ever since the "Suicide" Sega CD emulator fiasco, with the idiot lamers killing a possible public release of the project, I've still hoped a Sega CD emu might see the light of the day. Going by those shots, it just might. I wish the author of both emus well in their work on these new developments. :)
