iMAME: Mameboy? - August 28,2000 by JoseQ
Version 0.3 of iMAME has been released. This version of iMAME is designed for the iPaq, or probably any Strong Arm based Pocket PC out there. I am the proud owner of an iPaq and I just tried playing "Ms.Pac-Man" and "Galaga" on it. They worked flawlessly with no frame skip right out of the box! And no, I don't have my iPaq overclocked yet. If you have one of these puppies I recommend you download iMAME inmediately and get it working. There's one big problem with the iPaq though and that is that it can only register one button press simultaneously. This means that games like Galaga are pretty bad since you can't move and shoot at the same time. However, games like "Frogger" and "Ms.Pac-Man" don't really need simultaneous presses. I have heard that this is a hardware problem and there's no software way around it, so that's pretty sad for the gaming possibilities of this Pocket PC. However, you have to see iMAME working, it's definitely an impressive thing to observe. Major Kudos to the author!

Subject: Extend!
From:
I've been looking into buying one of these - one of the ideas I have is to extend the design via the (assumed) Serial connection and make a dock with a mega-game joypad. I'm thinking along the lines of the Gravid Eliminator - analog and digital, at least six buttons, etc.

The electronics are easy, the molding is something I do not have experience with.

Subject: Map the keys
From:
I don't have a pocketPC nor have i seen imame running but if the key config screen is the same as the normal mame config screen you could map the fire key to the right and left keys for galaga for instance. so moving left and or right also fires a shot
