The Rumor Mill - August 30,2000 by JoseQ
Well it's almost Thursday, so I have to hurry up and have this written and posted before midnight. As you know Wednesday's are Rumor Mill days, and with great pleasure I'm here with a bag full of Rumors just for you... I have a whole variety of Rumors this week, including some new Sega CD emulator details! While no pictures or screenshots made it to this edition of the Mill, I did get a whole lot of reports. It seems this feature is gathering quite a good amount of momentum, so it should continually be a regular feature on this site every Wednesday. So without further ado, I present you with this week's Rumors...
Where to start... well, here's a short report on a Gameboy emulator that's still to see a first public release. The name of the emulator is "Beaten Dying Moon" and while some of my reports have seen it running on quite a few different platforms, it has yet to be publically available. Agents also caught a sneak peek at the Timeline for the release and apparently the public release mark has been placed somewhere in the very near future, even as close as this week! All that's lacking is a user interface so that all of us aren't lost with this brand new emulator, and then we should all see BDM out... I'm one of those looking forward to it.
While we're in the topic of Nintendo related emulation, let's touch base with Apollo, a Nintendo 64 emulator that seemingly went onto vacation for a while. While this was public knowledge, we managed to dig some information from under the hood of this puppy and it seems that it is being fitted with a brand new recompiling engine that would most definitely increase the speed of the emulator to more enjoyable levels. A Graphics DLL is also being developed for the emulator, and once it is completed it will even include a color combiner that will allow you to see a "transparent Mario". I'm not entirely sure what my agent meant with this, but I'm sure we will find out. I wouldn't hold my breathe for a release of this emulator, but it will happen eventually, and when it does, we shall be there to download it.
It seems silly old Qmeister forgot to post a simple detail about last week's trivias regarding Michael Beaver's Mimic. While those who guessed that the non-ambidextrous system was none other than the Nintendo Gameboy, the other one was too vague for anyone to actually decode it. Well, the yet to be emulated game from the mid eighties is actually a driving game. That should narrow it a bit further for you to guess... While the Q was informed of the actual title of the game, I am not in authority to say what it was... I will say however that it will be enjoyed by many.
Our nicely placed spy birds over at Norbert Kehrer's house were happy to report on the next title making it to the Java Arcade Emulators section at N.E.S. While focus seems to have temporarily moved away from the Bally Midway games, the next target to be pinned down by Norbert is none other than "Kung-Fu Master". In all probability, the father of all fighting games. This should appear by next week or so.
On to our birds stationed at the Virtua camp. While the report was very short, the agents did manage to notice some bugs being squashed and even some more speed-ups which are always welcome. Either development is progressing slowly but surely or my birds are eating too much bread... We'll learn more soon enough.
Well, what do you know. I lied. I did get a screenshot to show you this week after all... And guess what, it comes from a brand new Sega CD Emulator never before mentioned on The Rumor Mill! I was very happy to receive a beta version of the emulator and while I was asked not to mention who it's coming from or the emulator name, I was allowed to post this screenshot:

Sega CD Screenshot

While it looks a bit similar from the ones posted two weeks ago, you may notice the missing Japanese text at the bottom of the screen. Well, that could also be changed with Paint Shop Pro, but trust me on this one, I took that screen grab myself. I just covered the Window names to protect the anonymous author. Rest assured though, that everything seems to be falling into place, and a release should happen during September. Sega CD Emulation is becoming a reality people... be happy!
While the SMOG author is mighty busy with a thousands of miles move, our agents did manage to catch up with him and sneak some information out... The computer housing the source code for the emulator hasn't arrived yet at the scene, but the author was wise enough to get to work on an essential part of this emulator. Once the computer arrives, there will be an integration part and we'll probably get new reports from there on... Hopefully with good progress. Were you aware that this might see it's way onto MAME as well? Well, now you heard it here...
More Rumors? Sure! Let's talk Ages for a second... These are newly stationed birds and I'm very proud of their achievement. With their new benchmarking equipment they were able to notice a huge change in the behaviour of the emulator. It seems that a rewrite of the Graphics Rendered resulted in a huge speed-up of the emulator! And what's even cooler, After Burner was seen running perfectly! There seems to be no date for a release set on the schedule, but we can hope for one to happen soon. At least the emulator is making big progress, and now you know what to expect from this next release.
Nearly at the end of the Rumor Bag I found a nice report of a rare game that should see the light of day fairly soon. It's a CD based game initially designed for the PC Engine console and it is extremely rare, so chances are you have never seen it before even though it's a very cool game from what the report says. Once again, the name of the game has been crossed out... so I can't tell you that small detail... However, you will know what I'm talking about hopefully in the coming weeks.
Well that's it for this week's edition of the Rumor Mill... Did you like it? Was it long enough? Was it too long? Feel free to post your comments and I thank you very much for reading! Until next time, Q signs off!

Is it a crime to steal $0?...Of course not, you're stealing nothing...And by downloading an old ROM of a game no longer produced is, in effect, stealing nothing from a whineass company. Of course, N64 ROMs are a different story.

Ok, ok, I see your point, Cidem, it's warez. BUT. How much money are people making from games 10 years old? Hell, even 5 years old? Not a whole lot, eh? It's only when you start releasing PSX stuff and newer stuff that it becomes a LITTLE more iffy. But the companies aren't losing much money about this, because few people outside these scenes KNOW that you can get the free stuff!

Besides, Cidem, what are you really gonna do about it? Live and let live. To each their own. And all that.

Anyway, that's enough of my rant.

HEY! You are forgetting Funcoland! They need their money, and their gold-plated ferraris!
So please, avoid ROMs. Buy from Funcoland.

Think this is connected? Here is a quote
from Retrogames talking about
some info just posted on Zoop's site:
"And now, the time has come. :)
We are gonna release in a few days an
heavily SEGA related game, however not
made for a SEGA system. This is
maybe of the rarest videogame ever made
didn't say released, hehe!), and my
guess is that fans will love it.
But, we do need several mirrors to
handle the release. The game is about
150 megabyte zipped."

He said a CD based game for the PC Engine, not a CD game based on the PC Engine. I can say pretty assuredly (unless another super-rare PC Engine CD prototype was about to be released) that the game is Space Fantasy Zone, but it actually quietly leaked out a few days ago, unbeknownst to the party about to release it. Have fun!

Whoo Hoo! Go sega cd emulation! Hey Jose, are the games playable at all yet, or do they just load the start up screen at the present? Are you saying that there are 2 sega cd emu's on the horizon? The one you tested is different than the one from last rumor mill? Thats exciting indeed if 2 emu's are in the works. Looks like ill have to search the used video game store to add some sega cds to my small, but nice, collection.

Actually Super Monaco GP does use a CPU - I think you will find it's Monaco GP that would need to be "simulated".

Mind you - saying that. You can "emulate" these things - it would just run slower than MK3! And be harder to write than Hard Driving...

No offense, but similar BIOS screens can be shown since YEARS by VGen. Running a MegaCD BIOS is just a matter of hacking a few stuff.
Anyway, what matter is that someone is working on such emulator, hopefully he'll progresses nicely.

Lookee,

If you don't like downloading the roms, then don't. If you don't like reading about it, then don't.

But please, do not tell me, the other visitors of this fine site, and JoseQ what to download, and what NOT to download.

Can you even understand that most of emulation is actually dedicated to the PRESERVATION of the history of technology? How does that make us pirates? *insert patriotic MIDI here* Without emulation, we could not peer into all the technology that we had in the early days of computing, and we could not LEARN from it. *MIDI gets louder* That's no different than, say, understanding past cultures in books, or movies, or stereograms, or flexi-discs. Does the aquasition of knowledge make us all pirates? Was adam the original pirate when he bit that apple in the garden of eden?

Furthermore, how much money do you actually think JoseQ, mr. arcade@home and the others make on these sites? How much do you think the emulator developers make on their programs? *MIDI patrotic music grows even louder* Not even enough for a cup of coffee from the high school cafeteria! They do it for the friggin' LOVE of it. *MIDI patrotic music ends due to lack of bandwith*

Anyway, if you want to have a deconstructive arguement about your feelings, "take it outside". If you want to have a constructive argument, go to CNET, or zdnet. But please, DO NOT TELL US WHAT TO DOWNLOAD, OR WHAT TO NOT DOWNLOAD.

Our computers. Our choices.

*huff puff* Sorry guys. I didn't dig the guy's mannerisms.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that the emulated driving game will be Sega's Super Monaco GP. Though this would really be a simulator, not an emulator, since the original machine was based on discrete circuits and not on a processor and ROM set.
