The Rumor Mill - September 06,2000 by JoseQ
It is Wednesday, and as if the hits to the site didn't show it already, it is time for the Rumor Mill! Somehow after this explosive week, with the first ever succesful emulation of After Burner, it seems like the bag is full of reports of little or no action. However, at least the agents are checking in, so we know what's been going down the Mill during the past seven days. So let's check in with the bag and see what I can find in there tonight...
First off, and this was quite a surprise, I got notice that Longevity's Digital Arcade is beginning to show heartbeats of life once again. And just checking with that link, a very cool image is shown, with a good number of hits already registered in the counter. A lot of work seems to have gone into the site while it has been down and I know I've mentioned it's comeback since even last year, but this time it seems that all the pieces are falling into place. I know, I was surprised as you are when I got this report in. Hopefully we will have one old sister site come back to life in the near future. Send a note to Longevity with the feedback he requests.
Well, here is something new... I got in a Handy report. This unique Atari Lynx emulator is indeed being worked on, albeit very slowly by its super talented author Keith Wilkins. Version 0.81 is what it will be labeled when it's done, and with it, Network Play should probably either live up or dissapear, that is where the author is putting most of his efforts right now. After that, he's moving back into MAMEDEV coding with his contributions to the Namco System 2 driver. Good thing Keith's agenda was made mysteriously available to our reporter.
Remember the non-ambidextrous system The Beaver was working on for Mimic? It's all too well known that the driver is coming along nicely. Although work on that other thing we previously mentioned has mostly stopped, we did get reports on the schedule for Mimic. Apparently work will progress at a faster pace come the second half of this month, and quite possibly a release should happen before the end of the month. In it, the author hopes to include the Gameboy driver in a good state. And they said that MAME had killed any efforts for any developer to come up with their own emus... Kudos to Beaver for showing them.
And what about that first Sega CD emulator the Rumor Mill mentioned a couple of weeks back? Well I have received an interesting report about that. While no new screenshots are available, there has been good progress made on the cores themselves. The reason for the lack of screenshots is that even though the emulator is doing some things it wasn't doing before, they wouldn't be visible with simple snapshots. Also, some of the hardware found on the Sega CD System is still not emulated, but actually sort of 'faked' within the emulator itself so that the core can continue on as if it had performed certain graphical functions. Lack of documentation is what hurts the most in this tedious process but hopefully the genius behind it can figure it out soon. I for one am very excited about Sega CD emulation and even more so now that I found a local place that trades them.
Those arcade Sega emulators we've talked about before also seem to be stumped. While SMOG is more likely busy with personal duties, Virtua has been battling with the polygon unit while trying to find newer dumps of the game to see if that sheds some light on the subject.
I did get a report in about AGES, and while not a lot of noticeable work has gone into it, it has been seen to be active during the recent period. With finishing touches in mind, a release should near.
And the last report I received for this week concerns Final Burn. The author seems to be devoting all his time to getting the 'Road' to be emulated correctly in the games that currently work with the emulator. This should be an important milestone as the current emulation, while working fantastically, would then become a lot more complete. And how about those other games running on similar hardware? I for one would love to once again play "Power Drift" which was mentioned on a poll going on at the site albeit sadly with a 7% vote pool thus far.
That seems to be it for this edition of the Rumor Mill... I guess that with a new MAME, new After Burner Emulator and more, the scene has been quite busy during the past week... And they said the scene was dying... look again. Until the next week, Qmeister signs off. Have a great week!

This may seem like a stupid question, but where does one get the After Burner I and II roms in the first place? I didn't see them on the Final Burn site, and a search pretty much turns up nothing...

I've waited for this game ever since I got into emulation, and now that my wait is over, I can't find a ROM!

Please have pity on an After Burner addict...

My vote is on PowerDrift. Though not many people actually seem to know about the game, or seen it in reality. But I must say, Powerdrift was/is one of my favorite arcade games I ever played :). I remember that the graphics were incredible, and all my money was gone in a few hours ;)..

Question for Dave: just curious why Thunderblade
is lacking sound? Does it use different
sound hardware than afterburner? I would
think if you got afterburners sound working
Thunderblade wouldn't be a problem.

Here's a little bit of goss for you. I am a beta tester for the Sega CD emulator, and I am happy to announce, based on my system, the second release is twice as fast as the first. :)

Well looks like i didnt make it in time to get in the mill tonight... oh well.. here is the lowdown on SegaEMU :) ...

SegaEMU 1.00 BLD2 has been sent to the beta testers to get some feedback and info about speeds etc... no games work yet, and only one of the bios works right now. This i believe is due to StarScream fetching from an invalid memory region, i am working on this for BLD3...

More news soon...

From: ns1.webster.ac.at
Following up on your FinalBurn mention, I checked out the Finalburn.comn site, and Power Drift was actually polling some great numbers -- 24%, from what I saw, which would be the highest draw of the vote. I gave Thunderblade my vote, especially since the driver is already partway completed and I really would like to see that game in its best form possible. I wish Dave luck with getting the road issue taken care of, because that seems to be the largest issue in emulating all those great games.
