The Rumor Mill! - December 13,2000 by JoseQ
Well, we (the United States) have a new president, and although that seems to have stopped news from flowing today, it won't stop a Rumor Mill to be posted tonight. This is one of the last editions of The Rumor Mill this year as I will be going on vacation and while I will keep the site updated, I may not be posting Rumor Mills while I'm away. After The Rumor Mill next week, there might be a lapse of two weeks without Rumor Mills. Anyhow, a look inside the bag this week reveals rumors from: HanaHo, Atani Software, Apollo, some Bliss, GENS, and some RockNES. So let's get it on!
Starting with HanaHo, I've gotten some official information even though the website doesn't mention it. We've spotted the company processing orders for the Mini-Pac Cabinet as well as the Cocktail table. So if you're interested in those, don't hesitate to contact the sales people there about one. Also, Capcom Hits #1 is for sale for $9.95 if you're interested on rightfully owning these ROMs, which are actually not available for download here. And finally, those of you interested in using your Hot Rod via an USB port, an adapter for all existing and future Hot Rod owners. The adapter sells for $39.95. I had the opportunity to test this device and I must say it worked extremely well with every game I tried, including Track & Field which had given me problems previously when playing via the PS/2 port. I highly recommend it. It also helps for Hot Plugging your Hot Rod vs. having to turn off your machine every time you want to store it somewhere else.
From Atani Software I've learned that SegaEMU has seen a 75% complete rewrite of the code which (as always) result in much better sound among other things. This should be going through testing soon, so I will probably let you know how it's looking as soon as I get a chance to test it out.
Moving on to Apollo from which I got a report in, even though the latest update on the website doesn't put Apollo in the very active light. Even though that might still be the case, the report states that some static recompilation work is being done on the emulator which should resemble that of UltraHLE and Corn (two of the fastest N64 emulators in existence). The project is en route to becoming private shortly after it's next (last) release which also comes with great chances of the source being released. That's what we've learned, however these are rumors, so you should take them with a grain of salt.
Some nice work in progress report for GENS as it nears a release (from what we're being told off the record). There will be a new renderer for 25% scanlines, MMX Optimizations for some of the existing renderers, more configurable options, improvements in Game Genie support, and the usual bug fixes. The FM Chip emulator is also targeted as a possible rewrite in the near future which should result in improved accuracy and speed. This shouldn't happen until well into 2001. However, a release should happen before that, so hang-on tight, it'll be here before you know it.
About Bliss, the IntelliVision emulator which I think has maken a great debut, I've learned that most of the speed problems that some of you are having using the emulator are actually (well-documented) bugs in Java rather than the emulator itself. For comparison, you should know that some users on P2-350 have gotten good results with the emulator, so you shouldn't assume that Intellivision emulation is slow. The good news for Windows users is that once the DirectX version which enables full-screen gaming will obviously go over this bug, and should result in much improved speed. If you're not getting the best results with this emulator, just wait for future releases and try them out as they are released. Chances are you'll get what you want eventually.
About RockNES I got a report stating that Fx3 is working to fix the MMC3 IRQ problems which some users are reporting. Also for fun, he's working on MMC5 extra-stuff. This work is going into the original DOS version as usual. I didn't seem to get an expected release date for the next version of this emulator, but at least we know Fx3 is working on it.
I did get some reports from Zeograd's Hu-Go, which states everything that you see on his news page, and also a report from SMOG stating that there was nothing to report for this week. Same for FreezeSMS as a matter of fact, as the author is on vacation.
Well, that's all for this Rumor Mill. I guess that with Christmas just around the corner, most people are busy doing their shopping, vacationing or worse, going through finals and exams. I personally have been quite busy, and the snow we're getting certainly doesn't help get things done quicker. Anyhow, I hope you enjoyed this Rumor Mill as I enjoyed writing it. Until next week, Qmeister signs off, and thanks for reading!

(Sigh.)

Seeing that SSI will never, ever re-release any and all Kick-Ass D&D Games from their "Goldbox" Series that came out in the mid-80's and are every Old-Schoolers wet dream. Would one of you out there find it in your heart to do what I do and go to every garage sale in the hopes of Finding an unopened copy of GoldBox Series: #3: DragonLance: Champions of Krynn. Remember, we control a majority of the internet. We also have more games in one series than any other. (Mario can now bite my shiny metal ass.) I'd also like to see that Plumber roll his Thac0 a few time over to see if he could even hit bowser with the most perfect shot with a (+5) Holy Avenger Long Sword. That's right, I'm a nerd. But if you're reading this site, aren't you too?

Now do it before we pelt you with Magic cards and D20's.

"Yeah, you passed it over a half-hour ago."
"Jesus Christ, why didn't you tell me?"
"Because your last four Ex-Girlfriend's houses you've stopped at, I've heard screaming, and guns going off."
"It's just that there are a lot of spiders around in the world."
"Never knew they bled so much..."

Was wondering the same thing .. a release meant for 6 months and 7 days ago has never seen light and it seems no neo-geo related sites have any information regarding a new release or what the authors are up to (and what was that 'personal tragedy' they mention on their homepage anyway?).. I'm hopeful for a Christmas release sporting more speed and compatibility and the ability to use the mouse in the irritating maze.. however I'm just plain happy 0.6b works with Windows 2000 to begin with.

dude, someone needs to take the bliss source code and re-code it in C... it would be just as portable as java (just recompile for different systems), and a hell of a lot faster and better equipped to take advantage of system resources.... just thought i'd give my two cents

Not to mention that enabling JAVA makes your computer allow pop ups on the internet, as well as leaving your system open to various types of internet virus.

That's a misconception. That is true if you enable Java on your browser, but it has nothing to do with Java on your system. You can run bliss and it will still not allow pop-ups on your browser.

Actually, Java is only about 10% slower then C on average when you are using a good JIT VM (JustInTime compiler compiles every method before runnign it and keeps the compiled code for reruns).

Somethings are pretty slow like arrays are actually objects... I'm not sure how fast converting it will speed things up. You would have a better go if you used a better VM (jdk1.3 for instance) then directly converting it to C.

There are also things that you can't do in C at all. You can fully access an object without knowing anything about it (reflection). This is slow so probably isn't used. But if it is, and is at the base design of the emulator, your hacks to get it to work with C might end up being slower then the original Java code.

btw, I write manufacturing software in java. I get to try to optimize drawing every day in java. Some interesting fun things. But better design seems to speed things up way more then optimizing specific objects... of course emulators are different because they run the same code thousands of times a second.

btw, great emulator. I would LOVE to see the source!

I've been considering shooting an e-mail to the author and asking him if I could take a crack at writing a Win32 C/C++ port. Keep in mind: I'm not an experienced coder when it comes to graphics and sound, and I have practically no experience with DirectX, so if I decided to take this on, it would be a considerable amount of time before this saw light.

But, a rumor nonetheless. =)

If you really want to use a controller that is similar to the old Intellivision controller, just use a M$ game pad pro and a keyboard. The special thing about the pad pro is that it's digital AND analog.

If Capcom is smart they should consider making and selling a CPS2 emulator. I would rather have someone release it for no $$, but that may take a long time. I would buy it & I'm sure many others would as well.

Or better yet. Sell unencrypted roms for use in other emulators! it probably is extremely easy to do if you know the compression algorithm. They seem to run the same hardware other then that

One thing I'm waiting for is for some emulator to enable Qsound since there are now sound cards that actually have it built in now. Street Fighter games sound hollow without it. ^_^

It'll be cool to be able to BUY a Hanaho Capcom CPS1 CD. I sent a request already and as soon as I can find the price with Shipping, I'm making my order...

Damn I wish a few other companies would do the same, hey $9.95 is a nice price to have legals roms...

Maybe someday other companies will see the opportunity this presents... :)
