MAME 0.37b12 with CPS2! - February 15,2001 by JoseQ
Well what do you know, a new version of MAME has been released! You can download MAME 0.37b12 from the Emulator Download Page. Believe it or not, CPU optimized versions are already available from the MAME site linked above. I guess the most interesting part of this release is that thanks to Paul Leaman, MAME now does CPS2 games too! This includes "Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers", "Marvel Super Heroes" and "Alien vs. Predator"!!!. Another biggie in this release is "Robocop 2", which was added by another MAME champ, Bryan McPhail. Here's the list of all the new games supported:

I've been using MAME for over a year, but the recent CPS2 stuff is confusing. I have the CPS2 roms and XOR tables, but what do I do with them to make it work? Thanks for the help fellow emulation gamers!

Read the link on retrogames a few days ago about the IDSA suing some romsites. In the article linked - they state that the maximum penalty is that amount PER rom.

    Read before you comment.

great news that the mame team decided to take care of Cps 2. But it's sad that Dave decided to concentrate on games like Thunderblade, because Final Burn was nearly perfect when it handle cps2 games. Whatever, I download mame and try it (nice works !) it run cps2 games nicely but less rapidly than on Final Burn...There's the same difference between neogeo games running on neorageX and mame...
I have also downloaded Marvel super heroes but the roms missed three things : mshux.03
    mshux.04
    msh.02
where can we find this three files in order to run this wonderfull game ?
Thank you in advance ! ;-))

Those are the decryption files I believe. (The decryption files usually have an "x" in the name of the rom). At the moment they arent available, but they are probably being worked on right now (or soon) by the cps2shock team. Once they are ready, they should be easy for you to find. Check the cps2shock website for better info than I can give you. :)

This was only 4 years ago...
As mentioned before MAME is about perfect emulation, Not optimized playable games!!

I think that is what RAINE was all about ???

If you can't play it, just be happy that it is there and with a little effort on your part you can.

I know that all you peepz are 4getting one major thing.... MAME is not there to have you play games on your PC... FAST! It's there to emulate games Period! The MAME team are only trying to supply a real romset with decent emulation. THATS IT! If you PC can support it...FINE! If not, thats not their problem. MAME is just a resource not a program or whatever. I hope I said this correctly and that is all.

    Happy Gaming!

While waiting for Mame.dk to finish u/l'ing the roms, I thought I'd throw in my two cents.

I can see both sides of the technology argument. If you're serious about upgrading, and can afford it, get any half-way decent video card (even a low-end Voodoo 3 will do for emulation - $80 retail even), an Athlon/Duron at 800+ mhz/MB (go Asus or Abit!) and any ATX case (I like the SuperMicro 760A, but it's big and expensive), and BOOM! you have an emulation rocking god!

But I was a college student once, trying to pay my own way through school (grabbing grants/loans wherever I could) and know what it's like to have to choose between computer upgrades and food. Hmmm...well, we all gotta eat, right? :-) Can't eat our high-end CPU's, can we?

But, on the other hand, emulators are like any PC app -- these days, or any day in the past: the software will always drive the hardware. If you want to play a really cool, new game, you MUST upgrade. And looking at how emulation is going, the same will hold true for the latest emulators/versions of emulators. Sad, but true. Hell, I'm seeing slow-down on my Pentium III/733, so guess what? It's time to upgrade... If I was still in school, I'd be throwing things around my room, screaming, crying, but, sadly, living with it.

I'd like a 61", big screen TV, too, but I've gotta save up for that!

    Onyx

I cant download nothing cuz all the servers are clogged..What i want to know is how well does it play? Is it worth the download? How does it play on a p2 300, 98 meg o'ram, V3 or any system close to that. Thanx MAME, hopefully we will see a mame32 relase soon..Im sure of it!

P2/300 is going to be iffy. Try running a CPS1 game. If you can manage it at a stable 120% speed you should be able to handle CPS2 at full speed, or pretty close.

Thanks for the new release - I am sure Mame32 is on its way - great new site by the way mame32 team.

A small note about PC's and upgrading.

Technology moves in leaps and bounds these days. Pentium 3 Processors are dropping and this can only mean good things for us emulator lovers. But.... spare a thought for the people down below - I mean the Pentum 2 and below crowd.

They still love games - they still love there PC's and there is room for everyone in this comunity - just please dont brag about high end specs - we know it will be quick on these machines - we dont need to read about it - OK

And everyone - the emulation scene needs us all to stop bickering - so lets just go back to our roots and enjoy every new release

Yeah, I remember pumping 10p pieces into that one in the arcade at the travelling fun fair that came to our town two or three times a year. It was one of those banged up games at the back, but I loved it (Boulderdash too!).

Just in time.. I just built myself a 1Ghz Athlon with 512 megs and a 45 gig
hard drive. No slowdown worries for me. Personally I think people with 486's
shouldn't be in the emulation scene anyway. You can get a fast Athlon CPU for
around 200 bucks. I think all these games are worth that. On another note, I
wish these guys working on MAME would take a breather on the new games for a
bit and work on getting the current games working better...I think one good
game beats 10 half-emulated, no sound games any day. Plus sprucing up the GUI
some and adding better joystick support would be nice.

All of that still doesn't add up to more than $250. Granted that isn't anything to scoff at, but still...

Ok hotshot lets do the math...A decent mobo $150..CPU *P3 733-933 $175-300 AMD Athlon/Thunderbird 733-1ghz $200-420* Simms...hmmm convert to sdram...128 MB sdram...say $70...whoohoo! New 300 watt power supply...$45...this is if you dont have anything to start with, if your current PC is AT and the case you have isnt ATX compatible...new case....$60....I may be old but I can still do the math. BTW for those with choppy gameplay with Mame on a lower end system I have seen a Celeron 533 Voodoo 3 2000 160 MB SDRAM installed on Asus P3V 133 run games @ 60+ fps no slowdown whatsoever * MK2 exception BUT that rom never runs right on any machine including a dual Athlon setup I tried it on*

Yeah, but a mere two years ago the fastest most people could afford was a 450, like myself. Some people have situations where they don't have money to spare, college, etc. Please try to be a bit understanding.

It's really pretty fast as far as MAME emulation goes. 450 should hold up with a little frame skipping or sound off.

There, that wasn't so hard to wait for now was it? If you all could have sat there for a week none of this Final Burn fiasco would have happened.

In relation to the speed thing, CPS-2 is basically CPS-1 with more memory and an encryption system. Consequently, in your machine can handle CPS-1 (I get 60fps on a p400) then CPS-2 shouldn't be too much of a problem. Also, given the popularity of the system, we'll no doubt be seeing CPSMame (enhanced, faster CPS-2 only version) and significant refinement of the drivers.

Of course. He didn't can CPS2 until he knew MAME had it working. He does want to se it emulated, he just doesn't want to be the sole individual responsible for it.
