The Rumor Mill! - February 16,2001 by JoseQ
As mentioned yesterday, Qmeister has been incredibly busy with work, life and many other things, thus why the Rumor Mill was delayed. It's 1:00am on Friday, and I reckon it's a good time to open the bag and let the Rumors out as there's plenty to report on. I think you guys want to know, so I'll just go to bed later. For now, it's Rumor time. What's in the bag you ask? I've got Sega Arcade Project rumors, GENS, FPSE, SMOG, and Bliss.
So let's get right on it. What's been cooking inside the Sega Arcade Project oven, look no further to the Rumor Mill to bring you the latest. It seems information on those Sega discrete circuit games is not easy to come by, however, the story is quite different for that huge emulation milestone we know as "Monaco GP", so that's the first target for the project. So what's done thus far? See for yourself as EmuViews brings you the first exclusive screenshot of the emulator in action:

Monaco GP

I got a short but nice report from the likes of GENS. You should expect to see at least a few changes in the next release, such as: better country detection, DMA timing modifications and the 'infamous' sound bug on "After Burner 2" is now fixed too! It seems the author is doing some research on network play for future development, but this is still in the early stages so don't expect progress reports here on that for at least a while. You know that I'll post them as soon as I get them, as Netplay is one of my favorite emulator features.
Do you want to see more screenshots? I managed to snag some great looking captures from FPSE running no other than "Resident Evil 3: Nemesis"! These are not on the FPSE website, so you will see them here first! Check them out:

Resident Evil 3

We hadn't heard anything from SMOG but you know you can count on the Rumor Mill to uncover the truth about any emulator. This time we didn't get any screenshots, but we managed to hear the actual sound and music for "Virtua Racing"!!! Apparently, this was accomplished with some information gathered from the Hoot author. Interesting eh? I'll try to dig some more on this for next week!
Even though Bliss got a release tonight including some features that were destined to appear on the Rumor Mill, I still got some dirt on the emulator that you haven't seen yet! A very cool new feature is being worked on that's a bit confusing to understand since it is something I believe hasn't been done through an emulator yet. Just to name it, the feature is support for the Intellicart. The Intellicart is basically an Intellivision cartridge that has a serial cable. You can download games onto the cartridge and play them on your real Intellivision console. Well, Bliss will support it by acting as a front-end to the Intellicart. In this sense, when you double-click on a game title, instead of Bliss start it's emulation engine, it will actually download the game which you can then plug onto your Intellivision console. Ain't that cool??
Want more stuff on Bliss? You got it. It seems Kyle Davis is also working on adding Configurable Inputs on a per game basis. This will let you have different key or button layouts for each of the games that you play! I'm sure many of you will like this.
And last but not least, some rumors that I'm thinking about making a reality. I may not be posting the newly supported games on MAME tonight since it's kind of late, but I will be doing that tomorrow. Rumor has it that all of the newly supported CPS2 games will be online at the good speeds you're used to getting from EmuViews. And if you're tired of an "FTP Full" message, you should forget about that as I'll be posting them on multiple servers. We'll see how that goes and chances are they won't last many days, but at least many of you will enjoy these new games. For now, just hang on and be a bit patient and let Qmeister get a good five hour night rest.
That's all for this week's Rumor Mill. Hopefully I will have caught on with life by next Wednesday and the Rumor Mill will be back on it's scheduled night. Until then, Qmeister signs off, and thanks for reading!

One Article Up: Final Burn 0.100!
One Article Down: Bliss 1.41!

I agree, wholeheartedly, classics like pong and deathrace should be in MAME. They are too classic to leave out because they were hardware controlled.

oh baby!!! I can't wait :)

it's really a shame that the MAME team doesn't want anything to do with old ttl games like this, IMO these acient games are the *deffinition* of Retro Gaming.

I thought it was a great day when Pong was addmitted to MAME. I still think it belongs in MAME, kinda like fish belong in water...

no disrespect to the MAME team, for they are *gods* in my mind ;) but couldn't the stance on old ttl games be re-evaluated? I understand the idea, you cannot emulate when there is no cpu, simulation is more the accurate term. But if you have a simulation that is running in the exact same way as the original boards couldn't we just adopt a looser meaning for the term emulation? :D

Oh well, at least Monaco is finally on its way (again).
