Magic Engine News! - March 01,2001 by JoseQ
The Magic Engine website was updated today with a new winner from their monthly contest. The CD-ROM given away this month was "Puyo Puyo". On the emulator side, a new Mac test version will be released soon as they have found the fix for the gamepad direction problem. However, audio track will still not be supported on DVD drives as they haven't figured out how to accomplish that yet. Visit the site for more details.

Is something that each person has to decide for themself.

Is it really right to charge for software based on someone else's designs and work, even dead?

I'm still not sure, myself. There are arguments to either direction.

the author deserves those few bucks for all the YEARS he works on the emu. other authors like the zSNES team, NeoRage, etc. would deserve some cash as well, but they probably got already enough in their real lifes... anyway, don't be a thief and PAY for what you're using.... $!@#head.

It is one thing to have a emulator that runs CDs and another for one that one roms. The whole appeal to get this emulator is to get the roms. If it was only running PCE\TG16 Cds I'd agree, but this emulators whole appeal is in roms. So I wouldn't treat the Michel's like kings because anyone can dump TG16\PCE roms, which are illegal btw. So it is in the grey area to begin with the fact it's main appeal is to run the illegal roms, the CDs are nearly impossible to find in todays age and they clearly state that it only runs real CDs when it comes to it.

If they made it only run the real CDs, like VGS, my whole stance would be different with their product.

this is an excellent emulator, it's a pitty we have to pay for it. the author is in is right to demand money for is work, but i won't pay. i admit that it's not that expensive, but i only had 5 games for my turbo graph (i,e: PC-Engine)and i haven't dumped any of them, wich means i should get ROMs in the internet, but then, i would most certanly feel compeled to get more ROMs, ROMs from games i do not pocess, wich as you know, is illegal. anyway, i know it's great, because i've donwloaded the test version and one ROM, tested it for one day and then deleted it. it's a great piece of work from this french author.

I have registered Magic Engine and would have to say its worth every penny. Its as close to perfect emulation as I have seen on any platform.
