MAME.DK is no more... - March 08,2001 by JoseQ
Some sad news developed today, as the best site to get MAME ROMs from, MAME.DK was put offline today. Apparently, their ISP couldn't hold the site online anymore, since they hadn't received payment for a while. MAME.DK had not received payment for a while from the supporting banner companies, so they couldn't really afford to keep the site alive. These are definitely sad times as things like these keep happening everywhere. Just shows how important the user support is. I guess it's time to show it now on those sites that still have ROMs available for us.
Many of you have also found this to be similar to when Neo Geo emulation started hitting the scene, and some sites went offline then just like now. It's clear that the size of the ROMs has had an impact on the costs of hosting sites with downloads like that, so we can only do what we can to help them survive. If you have a favorite ROM site, be sure to support it. For those thinking that I'm asking for your support for my site, please don't think that. My site no longer has ROMs, and the decision was solely based on the possibility of legal problems, it did not have to do with bandwidth costs. Sad, but true.

I too set up bearshare after I read about it on this message board. I share all of my roms whenever possible (which is usually the weekend). I agree with the comments below completely. For christs sake, the Emulators are free! Someone spends lots of time writing it so that you can play classics like sf2. And to those who moan an Emu is too slow, try spending some money on upgrading your PC, since you probably haven't payed for any of the games!!

Subject: no-one learns
From: 143.167.2.14
with mame.dk dead and other rom sites pulling roms I thought that I would lend a hand to the community I have been a part of for so long. So I set up bearshare (a Gnutella client) and started to share some of the more sought after roms (street fighter the movie for example) on a fast internet connection with the intention of sharing my entire collection (almost complete set) when I found the time to transfer them onto this computer. Many people have downloaded these roms - reckon people have downloaded about a gig of roms (most of that sftm).

Now - go on Gnutella and do a search for stfm - you will only find one or 2 yet over 25 people have downloaded it from me. Where are they???? I would be grateful if someone could supply me with a technical explanation beacause if it is just freeloaders who aren't putting anything back then I will pull the plug (but only after I really annoy people who are 97% through downloads).

If other people aren't going to help each other - then why should I waste my time. They killed mame.dk with no banner clicks - they pound rom sites until they are creaking at their kness - they shout at people like JoseQ who are such a big part of the emulation community.

All I read these days is 'This emulator isn't good enough' or 'how dare you remove YOUR roms from YOUR site' etc etc. These people are in this game for the fun of it - and to help others and they get repaid with a kick in the teeth.

want a better emu? - program it yourself.
want a comprehensive romsite? - shell out the money and set up a server.

This rant is almost over - you;'ll be glad to hear. I just want to say thanks to people like JoseQ, mame.dk, vintage gaming, the mame programmer team, and any emu coder or site maintainer out there. Thank You all - you have done so much with so little thanks.

To everyone else - you want a better emulation 'scene'? Then be a PART of the community and start to help others anyway you can.

goodbye

*clicks on the banner as he leaves - as he has always done*

Thanks for the memories guys :(

When I was in pakistan, I use to play arcade games everyday. because the arcade store was 2 min walk from my home. My favroit game was Art of Fighting 2. Then in 1994 I left the country and came to USA. In US my life style did not allow me go to arcade store. In 1997 I paid a visit to pakistan and fell in love with the game King of fighter 95. And then last mounth in year 2001, I was searching king of fighter 99 move list for my cousion (who still lives in Pakistan), and I accidently found out about this whole arcade emulation stuff. Then I found "THE" site "MAME.DK". I downloaded many games (and played them). I was also planing on building a real arcade stick. It was going to be just like old times. Then my computer crashed, once I restored it, THE MAME.DK was no more. my dream is dead now. I HATE SEARCHING ROMS ON THE WEB. I will not forget the games I played last month with my key board. Thank you MAME.DK

I've been a regular at mame.dk for 13 months and I'm one of those people that actually owns arcade-boards.

14 days ago I was watching the danish tv program "Raketfart" on channel TV2 ZULU(danish cabel-tv). I was shocked to discover that the site WWW.MAME.DK was mentioned in a review on arcade-emulation.
I believe that this is one of the main reasons to the loss of mame.dk. In 3 minutes 2-5 million danes was made aware of the site. Since that day there were reports of bandwideproblems on the very site and everything responeded in snailspeed. But that probably normal when a few million people try to log on to the same site.

Too much publicity killed mame.dk.
Shame on you "Raketfart" and that BASTARD tellystation.
(Sorry for the bad english and the bloody cursing - but this really bugs me - being a rom-leeching-dane myself)

hmm...Blitz -- The emulation scene can offer you a lot of direction, background, and programming knowledge to speed up the games which run slowly in MAME, and perhaps fix your sound troubles.
It was unavoidable mame.dk would go down. Pushing 5 Terabytes of files in a week after the last mame release could break any budget. As far as Bearshare/Gnutella, it's not quite ready for prime time with too many users signing into it with 56k and slower modems.
And as far as the free file hosting services, they have a 500mb limit on downloads per day -- yes, that's 500mb maximum per account. If you go over that limit, your account is flagged and they investigate -- upon finding rom files, they delete them. -- there are no disclaimers on the free server accounts as there were on mame.dk, and therefore you are overstepping legal lines.
Actually, be thankful for what mame.dk accomplished, be thankful and support the rom sites we have left, and if you really want to make a difference, either start your own rom site, or your own private/public ftp server with your bandwidth.
I'm duplicating the roms I have and giving/mailing them instead of the downloading hassles.

A sad day - I was a member and supported that site - but again - crying about it wont bring it back

I too liked Mame.dk's approach to listing roms - giving details of the parent and then the residial subsidiary files.

I think now is the time for a site like emuviews to update its roms links and give us the knowledge to keep our archives alive.

These individual postings are good but they will soon be gone and then where will we look - forums are long winded and messy affairs

Jose - please help us with a rom search engine or updated sites link

It's a real shame MAME.dk has had to close down, it was surely THE site for MAME roms & info. Personally, I think games companies like Capcom & SNK are missing an opurtunity here. They could have made some serious dollars distributing their old games at discount prices. Even if they don't ever do this I wish they'd stop with all this legal crap. They are not making any money from these games anymore, so why not just let us enjoy them. If anything
I'm surprised that MAME.dk wasn't shut down when so many other rom sites have been, and thank god that it lasted long enough for me to download Vampire Saviour & SFA2!

what's up man...I asked you a couple of questions in my last post so let me know...i just noticed something though. In one of your posts u said you DON'T HAVE "ROMS" on This site any longer due to "legalities." But on your home page you have Links to "roms" and "roms lite" and it takes you to Numerous Rom files to be downloaded. So i'm just curious if you DO or DON'T have Roms on this site. I have about 600 Mame Roms, All of the Nesticle, Callus and Shark Roms, as well as a good portion of Neo Geo Roms, and I don't know if any of that will be of any significance, but if I can upload them to help out somehow, i have no problem doing so.

P.S Jose, one other thing, do you have ANY IDEA why Nicloa has games like NBA JAMS and Samurai Shodown, Mortal Kombat I, II, and III, etc..etc....for mame when they RUN SUPER SLOW? i EVEN HAVE THE OPTIMIZED PENTIUM VERSION and TRIPLE ALL THE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTs AND THEY ARE STILL SLOW AS HELL...what's the purpose of that if they are so slow you can't play them? I'm just curious...and believe me, I'M NOT COMPLAINING...SOMEONE TODAY COULD DROP 90% OF THE GAMES OFF MAME and I'D BE HAPPY AS HELL. As long as I have my Donkey Kong, Galaga, Mr. Do, Super Pac Man, Pac Man, Track&Field, etc...i'm good to go...OH, and one LAST THING, the SOUND EMULATION for the most part is PERFECT...but why is there no sound of the ship exploding in "galaga" or no sound of "donkey kong" when he pounds at the top at the beginning? I'm just curious, those files are EXTREMELY SMALL..less then 100kb's...so you'd figure those two things would be simple enough to get perfect...but obviously not, that's why i'm asking. I also noticed that USUALLY Mame will tell you when there is NO SOUND for a particular game....it doesn't do that for Zaxxon or Super Zaxxon, and there is NO SOUND FOR EITHER of those games. Well, I hope you can answer those questions for me Jose, and once again, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!......GOD BLESS EMULATION......BLiTZ

you need samples for these sounds to play in the game - http://www.mame.net/downsamples.html

The purpose of that is that they're emulated which is great in itself. They're complex machines and difficult to emulate. Just wait a while until the computers are fast enough.

>P.S Jose, one other thing, do you have ANY IDEA why Nicloa has games like NBA JAMS and Samurai Shodown, Mortal Kombat I, II, and III, etc..etc....for mame when they RUN SUPER SLOW? i EVEN HAVE THE OPTIMIZED PENTIUM VERSION and TRIPLE ALL THE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTs AND THEY ARE STILL SLOW AS HELL...what's the purpose of that if they are so slow you can't play them

>Nooo, don't you no it? You can play at 100%(or faster!)the games NBA JAMS and Samurai Shodown, Mortal Kombat I, II, and III, etc..etc....for mame if you just use the optimized versions for PII/PIII or K6/Athlon. And with all frames(noframeskip)!. They run at full speed or faster on my PIII 667 Mhz.
Some tips: disable stretch. There was a pentium mame: if you have that slow CPU you have to now.
Play frameskipping with F11,F10,F9 and F8 buttons.

Tips no2:
- disable vsynch or/and triplebuffer
- sound rate at 22050
- disable scanlines and use only joystick on direct input if you have one or more
- close ALL other except Mame running programms,TSR's etc...
- use the dos version for more fastness

MAME is a documentation project - its purpose is to emulate those old machines *accurately* to preserve both the games and the underlying technology. Their primary focus is on accuracy of emulation, not on speed, and there are certain things about the way MAME is written that prevent it from being as highly optimized as other emu projects.

>OH, and one LAST THING, the SOUND EMULATION for
>the most part is PERFECT...but why is there no
>sound of the ship exploding in "galaga" or no

Many of those explosions and what not are produced via samples - they're played back, not emulated. You need to get the supporting samples files for those games - vg-network.com has 'em.

Donkey Kong's sound is completely emulated now, AFAIK - you need to update your MAME. =)

Last I checked, there was plenty of sound for both Zaxxon and Super Zaxxon. Again, check for samples files as well.

I think the thing I'll miss most is the database, not the roms themselves, they always had a list of changed romsets, clones, and screen shots for each game.. THAT was far more usefull to me that the roms themselves (which I can get anywhere)

Maybe they could bring the database back, without the roms they could just set it up on any free hosting s4rvice such as Tripod or whatever.

i agree with that, they did have GREAT SCREENSHOTS, changed rom sets..etc...but ANOTHER THING THAT HASN'T BEEN MENTIONED that Mamedk was #1 in without question was their "tips and tricks" They would BREAK DOWN DAMN NEAR EVERY game and tell you the tricks to getting the most possible points and/or playing for an eternity.....for example on Galaga I knew about the trick where you can get the ships to stop firing at you for the entire game...but of course, mamedk did as well and they broke it down, they had all the tips and tricks on Mat Mania and got me to play forever, because that Coco Savage is a CHEATING BASTARD! When I got to him for the 6th time or so at stage 25 or so, he'd wouldn't give me a chance to do anything...and just keep puttin me in that headlock and punching me...pickin me up....and doin the same over, and over and over.....but I learned on Mamedk that you could pile drive an opponent...then just throw him into the ropes and RUN INTO HIM.....once you ran into him, you could PILE DRIVE HIM AGAIN, and run into him again, AND REPEAT THOSE STEPS OVER AND OVER, until your opponent was out of energy, then you could just pin him. Anyway, there are MANY MORE TIPS AND TRICKS i learned from mamedk...but that's just a couple of them.....but my point is...the tips and tricks on mamedk, were the best, and just another REASON to be Sad at their closing. STAY POSTIVE, AND GOD BLESS EMULATION! ....BLiTZ

With existing napster:

Try renaming the "zip" ending of the file to "MP3", putting MAMEROM on the beginning of every archive (to ease searching) and then simply delete the beginning and switch the last three letters back after downloading someone elses to use them...

The next great ROM site (if there is one) will have to meet the following criteria:

Small ROM sets ACE'd or RAR'd, not just ZIP'd. [Hey, every little bit helps.]

Large sets downloadable one ROM at a time (ACE'd or RAR'd).

Resumes supported.

Because the site I'm getting it from does not allow resumes (thereby preventing *Download Mage* from accessing specific files from within an archive), I am- as I type this- having to download a 20 Meg ROMset to get one 2 Meg ROM.

As to ACE and RAR, if a guy can't discern how to inflate/compress a file, his trying to run an emulator would probably be dangerous.

I recommend the following two utilites to everyone:

Download Mage, shareware:
http://lctek.tripod.com/dnloadmage/

Power Archiver, freeware:
http://www.powerarchiver.com/

too bad about mame.dk, but they should expect me(or you) to bail them out. it sound like another lame attempt to drum up money(send in your check or we'll shut down.) just look at thees posts, people are ready to give them money - for what? for ripping of the capcoms and snk's of the world! i don't care how you rationalize it, but i'm sure 95%+ of emulation is done illegally(that means you don't really own the machine!). i like emulation, but not the idea of PAYING the wrong people for it. it's like paying a pirate group for your warez. where i come from, we have a saying, "keep it free." too bad companies like capcom don't realize that there is a demand for the old games as long as they are priced low enough, which they might be able to do if they were distributed over the net. then we could get roms from the right people and everybody would be happy...

Mame.dk didn't shutdown to "extort" money from people Jabrony! It's common sense the amount of files when compared to the monies received for banners, etc...was just too much to handle. If they were trying to pull a stunt like that, they'd do it BEFORE SHUTTING DOWN. Although they could say they'll re-open like a lot of others, if they get x amount of money by a certain time. But the bottom line is that they have been around for quite sometime and the effort that went into that site was genuine and sincere, and not about MONEY! Anyway, the bottom line is that it is a sad day for the entire emulation community, but I will mention one site that has "MOST" of the Mame Roms...however, they must be experiencing problems of their own, because i've been downloading from them for two years or so, and they've always updated their site daily, and now their last update is from a month ago or so. However, they still have MOST MAME ROMS and ALL THE CALLUS, SHARK, NESTICLE ROMS..etc. The site is "www.emuviews.com" Well, although this news is negative, we can still turn it into a positive by staying positive. Like someone else on here was saying, the emulation scene has gone through drastic changes, both positive and negative, so this isn't the end of the World or Emulation, and in the near future I anticipate some new sites with Many Positives. Stay Positive Everybody, and GOD BLESS EMULATION!

P.S. Jose, i always check out your site, it's definitely one of the best. I would honestly take emux over you any day about a year ago, but you CONTINUE TO DILIGENTLY put in the effort on a daily basis. And I commend you greatly for that. I also read an article from hanaho.com...that u have one of their "cabinets" with a 33' SVGA monitor and a HotRod Joystick, that must be SWEET! Are you addicted to that or what? I do have a question, did you finally get that 1024 reso to work out? or are you still at 800X600? Alright man, keep up the GREAT WORK! Thanks for Everything.....BLiTZ

How do you know that Mame.dk is closing for that reason for sure? A post doesn't mean anything. Even a copy of a past due bill isn't even good enough proof. How about actual physical proof of their profit reports? I clicked all the time on those banners. If I were Mame.dk right now at the all time height of vistors(CPS2 roms) I would take the profits and scram (and even say "screw you" to the ISP bill)! I'm with you Mame.dk! Do you really think distributing CPS2 ROMs is an all time high? It's a sure all time high for the bandwidth bill I'm sure. Whenever I put the CPS2 ROMs in, my bandwidth usage doubled. That's doubled, including all the sites hosted by SpeedHost and EmuViews (which by the way, includes Arcade ROM Heaven and it's FTP!). So you can guess that hosting CPS2 ROMs is actually costly, and not profitable.

Ideally we would still distributing 50K ROMs like in the old days. Then we could really make some money and give away Hot Rods, but with 25MB ROMs... we can kiss any positive profit goodbye. Specially with the ad companies the way they are. I can testify for them that many companies are folding up or not paying. One of my sponsors hasn't send me a check this year yet!

to support sites like mame.dk on banner
ad money. That big 1% click-thru isn't
going to pay anybody anything. They
should just say flat out how much they

Currently, I know of some services that provide free storage for its customers like FREEDRIVE, MYSPACE, etc. with max. of 25 to 50 MB. If we all chip in, every seriuos Mamer can upload different roms into these remote servers while encouraging others to do the same. A rom here a rom there, it's possible to have thousands of rom sites through these services. These service allows sharing of files as long as you provide a shared password. Sounds crazy? i understand the bandwith issue is important. of course you can dismiss my point of view out of hand but im sure that genuine enthusiasts would pay for such a heavy download. the reason you wont do this is that you dont want to take any money in exchange for roms. which brings us back to the legality issues.

this is of course why mame dk cant accept donations. qed.

There ought to be a new type of "credit" card, especially for web users. It would be like a long distance phone card: You would buy it for whatever its value, plus a nominal fee (they would come in- say- 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000 dollar versions), without any registration or hoopla. You wouldn't even tell the 7Eleven clerk your name. Then you would use its number just like a regular credit card's. When it's exhausted, you throw it away. This way, even if your number were stolen, the thief could take you for no more than the value of the card. There would be no stigma of permanence, no further worries.

Paranoid hipsters like me don't like to hand checks and credit card numbers over to postmen and hackers.

If, however, MAME.dk posted the request, I would send them a money order for 10 or 20.

Mame.dk should have been a pay service a LONG time ago. All you punks who say "I would never pay for roms" are the reason why mame.dk got shut down.

I would be willing to pay a yearly fee to have access to the information and data on mame.dk. I have no problems paying for the roms and the big arcade publishers/developers should think about capitalizing on this idea. Their old games won't be seen in arcades again but they could see Gen-X people like myself paying a yearly fee to play their games.

For now, the only answer is BearShare! I too have put my entire list on BearShare. The only good way to maintain your roms list is to share your bandwidth and files with everyone else.

EVERYONE SHOULD SHARE WHAT THEY HAVE.
