As I earlier told you, with Mame.dk gone things are not THAT bad, plus it will indeed help to clean up the lamers as many "people" now question why even bother posting about the new MAME release. What a nerve.
Oh well. It took me 2 hours to complete the collection once again. Certainly not as easy as with mame.dk but effectively nevertheless. As for all the legall opinions that people have, please read my dissertation which JoseqQ has the kindness to host at http://www.emuviews.com/reviews/dissertation . It is about the legal facts of Emulation and it will give you many answers on some not so correct oppinions.

ROMs sites come and go, just like
everything else -- mame.dk just happened
to be a particularly good site which
people grew to depend upon. They'll be
replaced soon enough, somebody is going
to want to be a hero. Just one bit of
advice for whoever comes up next --
don't be the farm on banner ads. The
click thru rate is under 1% these days
and the backback won't be worth the
effort. Instead, allow people to mail
in contributions to your ISP and we'll
buy the bandwidth for you ourselves --
if someone doesn't pay then nobody gets
the roms. I guarantee that people will
come forward to foot the bill.

Just to add more fuel to the flames, I got all the new roms ;)

Seriously, we got spoiled with the 100% complete roms sites.
Emuviews didn't always carry roms, Dave also would time to time take them off, but both still made great news site.
Dave's VGC is no longer Dave's so lets just leave it at that.
There's always other ways to get roms, it's not that hard, it just takes time.
A lot of people jumped in the the emulation bandwagon in these recent years because it was just too easy to get roms and emus, I remember what a pain in the arse it was to get PCE and GB roms compared to today, I had to dial up to a local BBS on my 14.4 =) .
I don't see the loss of 100% rom sites that big of a deal, it just means more searching.
The newsgroups are a very good source for roms and lots of other illegal stuff.
Does your ISP's news server suck? Then sign up for a good one like supernews.
Even warez sites got roms these days, but I have to admit, swimming between the pop up ads is terrible.
There are FTP sites out there, they may not be 100% complete, but it's better than nothing.
All the people that are crying and screaming and pissed off about the 100% rom sites gone have proven to be newbies, inmature, crazy, kiddies, and lamers.
These people are so used to the fact that they were offered everything on a silver plater, a lot of times the emu authors quit because these same people just demand and offend the authors even after they quit because they're too used to the idea that they should get the roms ASAP with the click of a link and the emu authors are slaves that put these programs out for me to play.

Now that is becoming harder to get roms, they are running around like chickens with their heads chopped off because they don't know where to get stuff from, it's the old timers that don't really care because they still know where to get the stuff.
I'm not trying to diss the newer generation of emu players, I'm just saying that they should calm down, nothing is lost other than getting the roms (games you don't even own) from other sources.
You demand roms, ok, then put up your own ftp server with all the roms you have now and request people to upload you ones you don't have.
I assure you that your ISP will pull the plug from you after a while.
Where am I getting with all this?
well, I can sumerize all this junk I wrote in 2 words:
    GROW UP!
Emulation isn't the only thing in life, there's so much more out there.
ok, I'm done ranting. and don't bother flaming me because I never reply.

    The Future of Emulation :

Step one: More and more of the real emulator sites
will go like this one and pull their roms, hoping
that emulation news, and Emulators will keep people
    comming to their site.

Step Two: Within the year, the only ROM sites will
be foreign ones where you can't even read the language
and most people will be unable to find them.

Step Three: By the end of the year, 90% of those now
in the emulation scene will finally say "$!@# it!!"
after loading all the latest emulators and never being
able to play any of the games.. The other 10% will
hang out in rooms like this, bragging that it is still
cool that they can play "game X" even though the rom is
no where to be found. Eventually this latter group will
finally be kicked out of their moms basement and will
    wither and die..

Step Four: The remaing sites like this one will do the
same. Nintendo and Sony will be stunned at their easy
victory, knowing full well that legal action would have
got them nowhere.. and saying a prayer that the
operators of these sites didn't have the balls to stand
up to them like Bleam! did..

    The rest you can guess...

oh, wow, another version of MAME... Why should I bother
loading it? All the sites i've bookmarked for MAME roms
have either shut down or done like this one and switched
to just carrying emulators. Alot of fans of this site
are applauding the removal of the roms on here, and keep
flaming anyone who asks for or mentions roms, so I hope
you guys enjoy this site and the emulators with no games.
If you guys will give me your address i'll gladly sell you
some cars without a motor, and a airplane without wings.
This stuff will fit nicely with your emulators without roms.
You see, you idiots aren't fooling anyone. You claim to just
come here for the emulation news, and don't care for roms?
what good is that news and the latest MAME going to do for
you? I've been in this scene for years, it's always been
where 99% of rom sites were fakes, but now the final 1% of
them are folding or running scared. Personally, I'd like to
see Nintendo prove in court that my loading Super Mario on
the NES without owning the rom is costing them money. They
are running one hell of a bluff, and the sad thing is, it's
    working.

Oh and if your so sure you want to put Nintendo 'to the Test' you put up the freaking ROMS you are whining about missing and take the test, otherwise SHUT UP.

Mame, Mame, Mame, everyone is talking about mame, what about Final Burn? It is a great emulator that plays the cps2 games on lower end machines than mame does. Please let's not start putting down final burn again. We all know what happened last time.

I know you all want to play all these great old games and what not, but you need to realize that it's *just not worth it* to risk being put in jail and slapped with a fine you can't possibly afford to pay, putting yourself in debt for the rest of your life and having a criminal record, to do something that our government considers against the law: freely distributing files that contain copyrighted information. We've seen what happened to Napster - no matter how we all feel about it, Napster is still being forced to commit suicide because the government is saying that what they're doing is against the law. While a different set of circumstances, ROM distribution is pretty much the same thing.

I have been on both sides of the fence of the ROMs issue for a long time. On one side, I enjoy the ability to relive my childhood with emulators and ROM images that are made available to me free of charge by many hard-working, dedicated people who want nothing more than to further the cause of emulation. On the other side, I can understand and even sympathize with the copyright holders of these old games, that their works are being distributed freely, circumventing their rights to their own products. If I were a game developer who'd written a game for commercial reasons, I probably would feel just as they do.

Now, some of the game companies have indeed endorsed emulation, or simply don't seem very concerned about it - otherwise, they would have done far more than they have. Among these: Namco, Capcom, Sega and SNK. The ones that have been the most outspoken against emulation have been Nintendo and Sony. Whether they endorse it, decry it or are indifferent to it, there is still only one arcade game that used to be commercial and is now in the public domain (Robby Roto). The rest are still copyrighted works, and as such the original authors have the right to enforce their copyrights. The IDSA does this for them, and unfortunately for us, the IDSA has the government on their side.

I love emulation, and I have very strong faith that it will continue. I will continue to support it in every way I can. But I honestly think y'all need to accept the fact that ROM sites are illegal, as defined by the law, and therefore subject to being shut down at a moment's notice.

For the record, as I heard it, mame.dk was forced to shut down because the costs of running the site exceeded what they could pay for it, in part because the ad-banner agencies haven't been paying. They were not shut down as a result of any IDSA action. If there's more current info that says otherwise, lemme know.

Actually CapCom also has released about a dozen games to anyone who purchases a Hot Rod Joystick.
I think you can even buy just the CD now as well. In any case those dozen games are somewhat public domain. The ROMS are legally usable in any emulator in any case. :)

Hmm... You have valid points, and I'm not going to quote the entire message you typed in -- scroll up. ;)

As far as what your government says is illegal, the internet is a very big place. China is very lax on international copyright laws.

However, I don't think games still in arcades should be distributed online. The reason it is bad for the community comes down to ripping off the arcade companies. If you can play an arcade game, just like it is in the arcade, when it is still in the arcade available for play, that is not ethical.

However, with a game like Overdrive, which is not available in China anywhere, not even a clone of Overdrive, how can it be illegal to download it? It's not like the publisher will take requests to have fullsize arcade machines imported to my country.

Thousands of people rip, clean, decrypt, and archive these pieces of software which you will spend like 5 minutes playing, then you will declare that it sucks. I bet you think galaga sucks compared to UMK3. I've never posted here. I've been using joseQ's site for news for 3 years; and while I am kinda disappointed that the roms are gone (but understand why), bitching that you can't get something for free is UNAMERICAN, and more to the point, counterproductive for the scene. If you can't wait for captain america and the avengers (although I can't see why you'd want to), code your own driver, or shuchyertrap and wait patiently like I've been waiting for segasystem24 for like 3 years.

It seems that the webmaster of mame.net (Gridle) and Overclock's (Dave) have something against the emulation community and have instructed people to report Bob the IDSA. There are pages and links where these people seem to want to destroy emulation altogether. Anyway, you have the above two people to blame for this. I'm not going to post links, logs, e-mail address. And I don't encourage nor want anyone to do anything about it. I just wanted you to know what kind of people they are and who's to blame for the demise of Arcade Emulation. There is a big fallout in the internet let alone amoung pirate rom sights. No one clicks on banners, is name calling (just look at the final burn fiasco) can't afford the bandwidth and not to mention the idsa. It's just a matter of time before the internet is regulated by congress. Bush has said he won't do it durring his administration but we all know the famouse quote "read my lips no new taxes" too. It just isn't as easy as it was even a couple of years ago to get roms, warez, abandonware etc. And let's not get started on the moral issue of it all. I know I know warez is bad and older games aren't hurting anything but think about it if pirating even new games was hurting anything then the video game industry would be in a slump instead a billion $ industry. Besides does anyone here have a dreamcast, it is the first system I have seen where piracy may have hurt. But then again can anyone really compete with Sony? Nintendo? Microsoft? Perhaps but look at all the people buying the PS2 with it's bad hardware and software (don't turn this into a flame war I am just saying it is not as good as even Sony hoped and they have admitted it) Lastly there are a lot of good emulators showing up for dreamcast and Dreampac 1.0 is out and supports Ms. Pacman, Pacman, and Crush Roller and they play great with full sound. In fact sega is planning to release a development kit that you and I can buy and turn it into more of a hobbiest system. It is sad what is going on with mame sights, the dreamcast, etc. but it is a good time to be alive so let's stop bickering accept each others opinions and have fun with our games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arcade@Home is a dump of a site that "claims" to have roms, but its just a sham to get people to keep reloading the pages so he gets more banner hits, there are plenty of good places where you can actually get the roms you're looking for, try IRC, hell try gnutella.

True. Daves' was THE site for its days but there will always be subsitutes. As for the porno banners, it is probably a nessacity. Roms hosting, especially Neogeo and CPS2, needs lots of bandwith which costs. Porno sites don't give a flying sh!t for what you have in your site which probably means that they will still be willing to pay for banners' display. As for the comparison between Emu/Ware"Z" (hate that Z thing), it is my view that the two right now have much in common. There are awfully many braindead lamers around so as to even think that we are part of a different scene. True, there is no less credit for the emu authors who still do a magnificent job, but their audience is just not the same anymore. We became far too many. Perhaps it whould be a good idea for emulation to become once again a private joke rather than mainstream fashion. It is no longer funny, nor do I find particular interest in posting to emu BBs anymore. :(
