The Rumor Mill! - March 14,2001 by JoseQ
Update (03/15/2001 9:25am EST): I forgot to mention some rumors I got last week, and since Jason reminded me, I decided to make up for my mistake. You can find the updated rumors for FreezeSMS near the end.
First of all, apologies for not posting a Rumor Mill last week, but that happened (or didn't happen) for various reasons. I was flooded with work and sent the notes out to my spies, I was feeling like crap because of the cold (that I still have) and I barely received reports with goodies in them. This week, I did get some reports in and I do have some spare time for a change, so I've got a small bag of rumors for you. In the bag I have rumors from: Genital, Gens, Bliss, RockNES, and Sega Arcade Project. Few reports, but I'm sure some of the news in there will make you happy, so let's get it on!
On the Genital front, we've seen Bart awfully busy with school. In his spare time, he's been trying to figure out a bug in the IRQ handlings on his emulator. If you've tried using savestates in Genital under pure DOS, you probably know the emulator crashes... This crash seems to originate from the keyboard driver! So Bart is working on that, and once fixed, should get rid of all the crashes on the emulator.
Moving along to another Genesis emulator, Gens, I got a very thin report from Stéphane's land. We've spotted him rewriting the YM2612 core (sound) although that seems to be a bit far from complete, as not a lot of work has gone into it thus far...
The Bliss report was the biggest one for this week. Kyle has been focusing nicely on the C++ port of this emulator which was mentioned on his site not too long ago. There's three major areas he needs to work one. First one is sound, since for some reason, doing streaming audio using DirectSound is not as easy as 1,2,3. While the emulator is already showing signs of life, The ECS and Intellivoice stuff still needs to be ported, as it is currently stubbed out. Last but not least, he also wants to do some nice looking error-handling messages for the users, so that they know what's happening when the emulator can't get to work. There's also a bug that causes a lock up from within the sound driver, and he's also been working on that. Once all that happens, the emulator will be wrapped in a nice package and be released with a different name. We might have even gotten the possible name for this C++ release. Remember this is just a rumor, but our reports indicate that this port will be called "Xanadu", and once it is released, it'll be developed along Bliss in parallel, but never crossing paths.
On the RockNES front, we managed to get a report, although it's probably not one we wanted to see. There seems to be no known date for the Windows port of this great NES emulator, and as far as the DOS version goes, there isn't any release planned for the near future either. The Windows port depends mostly on Ale's motivation and free time, so once he gets the inspiration, the emulator should be updated to the latest DOS version.
Also a small report from the Sega Arcade Project. "Monaco GP" seems to be coming along nicely, although I don't have any screenshots to show. However, we did manage to figure out that a release should happen soon! This would support Sega's "Monaco GP" in a playable fashion so stay tuned for that!
And on another note, I mentioned this in the Message Board, but for those of you that missed it. The ROMs section here is far from dead. First of all you can still rate the games, see their flyers and screenshots, so it's still a good resource for finding the game you want, and then downloading it some place else. However, some of the files that were previously downloadable will be reappearing shortly. The approach this time will mainly focus on classic stuff like Atari, Intellivision, C64 among others... So don't expect to see CPS2 ROMs out there. At least not for now...
This is the update that made it into the Mill a number of hours after the Mill was originally posted. I did get a report from the FreezeSMS. It's no less than a huge screenshot showing this relatively recent emulator doing the SG1000 dance. Like other SMS emulators, it seems FreezeSMS will adopt the older Sega consoles which ran on similar hardware. Check out the screenshot here!
Well, that's it for this week's edition of the Rumor Mill. I think with all the turmoil regarding emulation lately, and all the crap that has originated during the past few weeks, it's normal that we see this kind of slowdown in rumor generation, but I'm sure things will bounce back at some point. You can count on me and EmuViews to dig all the rumors from the underground on a weekly basis. Until next week, Qmeister signs off, and thanks for reading!

...for real 'classic' ROMs return...
That was the real emulation spirit when the 'scene' started, we should have acess to all games prior to the nineties, whose economic return for the companies behind them is no longer possible : I can´t buy any Nintendo or Game Gear games in the shops, even if I look for them (there aren't any), so Sega or Nintendo won't loose a cent if I do play those games on my PC today, giving my satisfaction as some older games had better gameplay than some you can find today.

Wasn't there another project that was trying to make a simulator of Monaco GP? That team had been working on it for ages.

Hey Jose,

wghy don't you continue to post screenshots etc also for the games of the last releases even if you don't have the roms online? I continually get requests for screenshots and will prolly open an archive over at MameWorld in the near future. I'm sure many of your visitors would find that useful :) All the other archives on the net seem to have sth missing or some features people don't like. There doesnt seem to be a complete archive with just the ingame screens...
