Sony vs Connectix: Game Over! - March 15,2001 by JoseQ
I'm very happy to see this, although I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner, or even in the first place. Sony and Connectix have settled their dispute outside of the court. The outcome? They have announced a joint technology agreement that will have them working together on the emulation technologies Connectix possesses. This has been something that I think video game hardware companies should be adopting for quite a while now. If they really want to make money from their classic titles, this is the simplest way to go! I'm definitely looking forward to see what comes out of this.

How could Connectix think they would make money off of this. If you think SONY is going to continue VGS then I have the Brooklyn Bridge for sale buddy.

No one said that connectix would make money out of it. Sony are protecting their intellectual proprietry rights, something that you lamers have seem to forgotten in the past three years or so.

The emulation scene is dead. It's now just become a warez scene. How many of you guys actually play legal psx games on vgs?

hmm... so sony used this court case as a way of wriggling on on a piece of connectix hard work...etc for a cheaper than usualy price... ie make a deal with us or we'll continue with this court case!...or am I just being a little bit cynical? Just an oppinion BTW no need for lawers!

Um, if sony and Connectix get all chummie with eachother, where does that leave BLEEM (though I know 95% of the world doesn't like them anymore anyways)?

Since it's safe to say that they stopped the PC development of the emulator, who cares? When or IF they release the Bleemcast then most likely will Sony take the glowes off..

With sony and connectix working together (I own 2x PSX and 1x VGS) 100% & enhanced PSX game titles running on pc is a possibility.
I wouldn't mind playing a PC/emulated special version of Gran Turismo 2 on my pc for example.
Besides that, console games are quite different from pc games in gameplay and game design. I would like to see more console type games on pc!

What the hell will Sony do with it, I mean they hated VGS so much they filed a lawsuit, now that they purchased it, I bet they are not gonna use it for one damn thing.
At least when Sega purchased the Kgen emulator, it was still the sole property of the author, and Sega actualy used it for PC conversions and the Smash Pack for DC.

It seems kind of retarded to bring out a system, but not taking advantange of user group the size of the PC Gaming World. They should be concentrating on the playstation 2,possible porting some good titles over to the PC.

Hey you know what guys I'm fed up with Sony they think they are the World Company or what ??? all they are is mainstream nothing else. All they do is grabbing and killing as much company as they can kill the sole creativity of games companies through their Playstation 1&2 I liked the PS1 when it first came out but when you look it back they killed NEC HE, SEGA, and many more. For what ??? Only 10% of the games on the PS are worth to see not even to play for some. Thank you SONY thank you very much you are becoming the CNN of the video game industry with Microsoft as well "look through my ass and you'll see what I think" no thank you guys your PS2 is laughable I stick wich Shenmue, MSR and my Pc Engine.
About Sony and Connectix huh ... oh yes
sounds like this "$!@# we messed up !!!"
as it is said to conclude "keep your friends close and your ennemies closer"
Bye Bye Connectix.

You guys are hilarious. Explain to me how Sony killed NEC when they didn't even have a console until 1995. I believed PC engine died at the hands of SNES and Genesis. Consoles and emulation existed long before Sony entered the arena and they will existed long after they are gone. I suppose SOny is to blame for Coleco, Intellivision and the Sega Master System dying too. And, if anything, it was goddamn pirates that plauged the Dreamcast with the tons upon tons of burned Gd-roms. And it is countless piracy in the PC industry that is forcing many a great developer to close their doors. You guys bitch about this because it means it puts you one step closer to where you can't have free games anymore. Hell, JoseQ took the roms down for a reason and he is smart enough to realize and comment on how he thinks this a good idea as well. Go write a book or create your own game and have somebody else rip it off and see how you feel about it. What a bunch of bullsh!t.

Actually NEC Killed themselves. I owned the NEC-PCFX, the 32-bit game machine that cost 600 bux, in Japan. The machine came out around the same time as the Saturn and the Playstation. The game machine was not targeted for the mainstream and it suffered. All of the games were more exspensive than other systems (except Neo Geo carts) and only a few titles were interesting.
It the best machine for RPGs but how many people only want to play RPGs?

YEAH FREAKING RIGHT "joint technology agreement" -- Sony is going to take this technology and sit on it forever, mark my words. I'm sure the staff of Connectix are off on some beach laughing somewhere, and I don't blame 'em. But no way in hell is Sony going to release emulator software.

This is what all the fuss was all about, Sony was mad because they didn't think of it first. And now they have their dirty little paws on the emulator and everybody over there is smiling because they can start making money out of it now. Then again, money is always what it is/was about...

...is what we'll probably see. Not a new Sony-authorized stand-alone emulator.
I predict they'll consist of one good game packaged with a couple dogs, for $24.95 each.

This is good for Emulation. Maybe we can hope for Playstation 2 or for Dreamcast (and Nindendo64Official) Emulators
