The Rumor Mill! - March 28,2001 by JoseQ
Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, it's time once again to gather around the fire, and look what good'ol Qmeister has in the bag this week from Rumorland. Finally things seem to have picked up in the sense of news, and I've managed to use the spare time to catch up with work, which translates on more free time for spyi... cough cough... finding out about what's going on in the emulation scene through my underground contacts, birds that sp... ahem... fly around the emu authors camps to protect them and other sources... The bag has a few goodies this week including stuff from AGES, FreezeSMS, GENS, N64 plug-ins, Bliss, RockNES, Genital68K, and who may be doing the Kaillera dance soon. Read on!
Starting with AGES as the list above indicates... We've noticed that Quinntesson has been flooded with work and making a good effort to find a decent job (by the way, if you can help, it's obvious this guy is extremely talented with computers)... Nevertheless, he's managed to put some work into AGES including new PNG screenshot capturing, ZIP file support, and a lot of work on the renderer which should fix a lot of the glitches currently seen on some games. He has also been working on adding FM sound on the emulator. You already knew about some of those things you say? Well, that's because they've been mentioned here before. However, what you didn't know is that everything but the FM Sound is being packaged into a new release to happen within a couple of weeks! So stay tuned for that!
Moving along into FreezeSMS territory, we've managed to catch Jason expressing interest in Kaillera. While nothing has been implemented yet, it seems the author has the will, and might turn out being the first network playable Sega Master System emulator in the world. Ahh... Network "Quartet II" comes to mind right away... That would be cool indeed.
Staying in line with the Sega world, the GENS front, stéphane has been seen more closely examining Kaillera than the previous rumor. However, this would require a lot of modifications to the current GENS source tree in order to be implemented. But don't count GENS out of the race as it seems Kaillera support is in the list of additions for the next GENS release!
Moving to a different platform... I got a report coming from the stationed birds at Azimer grounds... The author has been spending time working on his audio-plugin which should meet the public when TR64 goes WIP6. The plugin is already working well with "Super Mario 64" and has been heard to be at around 75% on "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time". I didn't get any reports on when WIP6 might make it out, but hopefully it should happen soon, right?
Some very good rumors as well for Bliss (Intellivision) fans. The author has been seen working mostly on Xanadu, the C++ Win32 spinoff from Bliss, facelifting the emulator with a front-end. However, this author is probably the one who has gotten closest to Kaillera thus far. The author has done quite a bit of examining and is quite excited about getting Network play on his baby. Apparently, Bliss can make good use of Kaillera without a lot of work (just a few days!). Imagine how jazzed up Kyle is about this stuff, that he has put Xanadu development on hold, to devote his time to adding Kaillera support to Bliss. Once that is completed, the author will go back to work on his C++ port.
A surprise report I got was from the RockNES base. The DOS port will not include any network support as it is probably much harder to do there, however, the situation is not the same for the Windows port. What's surprising about this? They're not going to use Kaillera! Apparently their network play implementation is even better than Kaillera, although we will have to wait and see to experiment with it. In other news, RockNESX will also sport Direct3D (hardware acceleration) in the next release. There was no mention on dates about that though.
And last but not least, a bit of info on Genital68K. The author actually got his hands on a real Saturn console and he's looking on ways to interface it with his PC so that he can do some real testing on his 68K emulator. Although he has no plans to do any Saturn emulation work, it will most likely help him get his 68K code into a perfect state which will prove to be useful in his Genesis and SegaCD(?) projects as well.
On another note... Jason Starr (FreezeSMS) author is looking forward to any N64 emulator release. Where are you guys? (N64 Emu Authors) My spy bir... erm... friendly birds haven't found any of you yet. Any releases soon?
Well, that's all I have in the bag for this week. It was definitely a much better Rumor Mill than last week. I'm very excited about the Kaillera development as for one, it's the first thing that has gotten me into playing with emulators again. It will surely be nice to play 4-player "Super Bomberman" on an SNES emulator one day eh? Well, as usual, we just have to wait, as time always brings good things! Until next week, Qmeister signs off, and thanks for reading!

What happened to that Williams emu written in DR. Was it completely fake? It used to be in all the rumor mills about a year ago and at that time it was running mk1 full speed on a 400 if i recall correctly. Why dosen't the author just release it if they don't wish to continue it?

I can assure you it wasn't fake. It didn't get to a good status though, and since MAME almost caught up with it with optimizations, the author lost interest. I'll see if he wants to release it in what was it's current state, but I don't think the author will have any interest in doing that.

Yeah ... right!
The original "Super Bomberman" is one of the (if not THE) most entertaining party games ever!
Can't wait to play that one over the net either :-)

The FreezeSMS secret feature is NOT netplay. Although netplay might be cool.

And yes, Jason, it is me posting this :o)

Judging from all the inaccurate statements about me on your 'Rumor Mill', I'd say you make up everything else on your site as well... You're bound to have a correct guess every now and then. The laws of probability say that. Time has proven that my sp... erm... sources are a bit more reliable though.

Too bad, I will cry for j00.

What, are people expected to preview every emulation site on the web before they can post a story just to make sure nobody posted the story before?

Nothing would get reported at that rate

I'm not real shocked, given your site exists solely to bash on
people who contribute to emulation while you yourself contribute zero.

Atila, JoseQ, and Japump all rule far more than your grammatically-challenged ass ever will.

Hahahahaha. you are funny. You don't know who I am nor what I have contributed already. I respect your opinion but hey, I suggest you don't call someone you know absolutely nothing about as having done anything.

PS I have contributed stuff for ummm...let's see 2+ years.

But yeah, would be nice to have a release of one of the good oldies, Nemu or TrWin or Tr64. Whats happening with TrWIN? RCP also is working on the Killer Instinct emulator, i always thought trwin had the potential.

No.. read what the author had to say on his website-- his interest has shifted to SCD and FM emulation.
