RetroISOS looks at CD-i emu... - April 02,2001 by JoseQ
Some time ago, Philips tried to enter the game console, pretty much with the strategy Sony is trying to use now. Build a game console that's part of your living room. The Philips CD-i was born. It was advertised as much more than a game console, but for most people that spent the $299 after watching the hour long tv ad, it was too much of a dissapointment. Nevertheless, an emulator for this rare and expensive console is being developed, and RetroISOS has a couple of screenshots to show from the project in action. Be sure to check their Philips CD-i section to look at some screenshots from "Rise of the Robots".

HAHAHA, the a1200 sucked big time, the falcon was far supperior in everyway, first off it had a DSP which could out process the a1200 by itself anyway, 16bit sound, 16mhz 030 , not pathetic 14mhz 020...try playing an mp3 on your bog standard a1200 mate. (at 44.1khz 16bit stereo) don't think it's gonna happen, do u?

I dissagree with mikeys view of the jag greatly, the jag was very powerful, just didn't have geometry engines like the saturn and psx. It had the odd hardware bug but apart from that it ruled. Tempest 2000, AvP were incredible for there time, and which other company had Jeff Minter working on software for their consoles? But then again i don't suppose u seen the specs for jaguar 2 either right? it would have been out before the n64 and was about twice as powerful...DVD aswell. The jag failed because of bad bad marketing, not because of bad hardware...Same as the falcon vs a1200 debate, falcon kicked arse over a1200 but because of bad marketing it never took off properly, shame considering i can play mp3 on my 9 year old falcon, but what 9 year old pc could do that? None me thinks...

Ok, I phrased myself wrong. The Jaguar WAS a great system. IMHO (like the DC was to sega) the Jaguar was a chance to put Atari back on the map as a heavy contender in the biz. And you were right. The marketing was horrible. I remember seeing the commercials back in the early 90's (i still have the tempest 2000 commercial on video) and the only game I saw was T2000. I also think that Atari just ran out of original ideas. They kept trying remake old games, that no one (except for us classic gamers) cared for anymore. Eveeyone wanted a "Mortal Kombat" or "Street Fighter" or something in that nature.. Instead all we got was promises that were never kept. I never saw Defender or Breakout 2k or the Mortal Kombat 3 that we were promised. I admit, I loved my Jaguar. I think the reason I said what I did is because I was so pissed that it had SO much potential and was completely ignored (Again, like Sega's Dreamcast) by the public, other game companies, and even Atari themselves.

And 3D0 does suck, but I'd rather see that emulated than the CD-i.

My apologies for offending all you Jag fans out there. I'm a closet Jag fan myself.

Whenever I think of Phillips, I think of the Odyssey 2 I once owned. I hated it and still do. Phillips should've left the Videogame industry after the Odyssey 1. There was NOTHING worth buying on the CD-i, and why It's being emulated is beyond me. This thing was worse than the Atari Jaguar (Rayman & Tempest 2000 kicked arse, though)

Now I hafta say I agree with Stien.... Bring on the 3DO.

My parents bought one of those, and while it was nothing special, it had a few things worth checking out.

It had a bunch of game show games that are quite good, with the exception of Name That Tune. Bob Goen was the host, and totally ruined it. Nothing like the old show.

Some of the better ones were The Joker's Wild (Jr. was available for kids) and Jeopardy.

Surf City was a partially interactive adventure with some miniature arcade-style games and other neat things, as well as a soundtrack of Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, and the Ventures music.

Nintendo fans will no doubt remember (and remember hating) Hotel Mario. Phillips paid money for the Mario license, and Nintendo didn't oversee the project. It ended up being garbage. They also made two Legend of Zelda games, but I don't know how well those turned out.

CD-I, IMO, is worthy of being emulated. There are a few gems among the piles of crap.

I still remember those ads... with the late great Phil Hartman. I think he helped more than any other aspect when it came to the sale of this machine ;) j/k

Very glad to see it enter the scene.

3D0 anyone?
