The Comments - April 17,2001 by JoseQ
Update: I find my site is too much of the same without the comments system, so I re-instated it. My site will not be accessible through anonimizer.com, thus we will probably find out how much more creative that guy can get. With that, and the new moderators coming soon, the site should look cleaner shortly.
As many of you know, the EV Board was un-linked a few days ago due for the most part to a high density of unwanted posts. As a result, the activity moved to the comments area on the news postings, with the lamest of all lamers using www.anonymizer.com as their hiding place to protect their identity. Due to this act of bravery, I have decided to take down the comments section. There's no guarantee that either of those sections will make a comeback, and it might just be a hint about what other things might close as I'm probably getting close to being burned out. Just thought you'd like to know where the comments went to, and that there's really nobody to blame thanks to anonymizer. Bravo for security and anonimity. Why was it that we didn't want the P3 serial number feature again?

Just a few points:

1. Jose, you run a great site. But it is YOUR site. Your personal property, not some self-involved fanboys' ROM dump.

B. Don't listen to anyone who tells you to keep the site up or take it down. It should be your decision, depending on how much crap you're willing to take (a natural consequence of running a site like this, IMO).

3rd. Don't listen to anyone period. Bender's 1st law: Everybody's a jerk. Logic dictates from this that everyone on the net, everyone reading this, is also a jerk. (Sorry, guys)

Finally, a personal note. I've enjoyed this site for (around) 2 years now myself. Wherever the "scene" (what a stupid term) goes in the future, I want to say _Thank You_ for what you've provided. I've learned a lot.

Go Leafs! ...or Jays...
(what season is this?)

I've always been a supporter of people who do what others don't. Ever since I've been visiting EV I've had nothing but the best kind of experiences. I've learned so much about the emulation process and about the games that I had almost forgotten. Your news and opinions breathed life into a dying past-time ruined by consoles and greedy manufacturers.

It takes a lot of time and talent to maintain such an institution and you've done more than most people have for a generation. It's simple just to come here and download a game or 2, but I've never left without learning SOMETHING. Whether it was game related or not, I benefited from your site in one way or another. I, along with a generation of callused-thumbed gamers, appreciate everything you've done for us.

These brats that are ruining this great communittee are just that- brats. I, personally, would rather just have the site and no boards. I love the idea, but if you can't prevent lamers from posting BS, then I can do without it.

That said, whatever your decision is, it's for the best- meaning 'you'. You are represented by your site, and if you think it's affecting you in a negative way then it's time to put this puppy to sleep. I for one like this pooch and would hate to see it get the 'big sleep'...

PS: I might have sounded a bit overdramamtic, but that just shows that I give a damn...

For quite a while now, this has been one of the first places I go when on the Internet. An efficient design, major news, and, of course, the Rumours section make this site required reading for emulation fans. I'd hate to see it go because of harassers. We've already lost Final Burn (and set back Thunder Blade emulation) because of this....let's not lose this site too!

I've been visiting JoseQ's site for as long as I can remember...

I came here before I came to Dave's....

I never thought of this place as a roms dump..(I can't remember ever downloading a rom here....)

I liked it because it has always been fast with the news, faithful to readers, and great with reviews and rumors...

So I would like to personally thank JoseQ (and Dorsola) for the years of entertainment that this site has brought.

I would hate to see JoseQ go, but with the way the Emulation community has changed... I will understand and support whichever decision he makes. I hope everybody will do the same.

Should this site close down, I BEG all of you to let it go at that, and to not start badmouthing it or JoseQ on other boards just because you thought he OWED it to all of you to keep doing what he was doing.

I wish you luck in whatever you do JoseQ... I don't usually post on message boards, but I'm always around. I'm sorry if my silence over the past few years has given what I am sure is a very small minority of whiners a bigger voice.

Thanks and I hope you stick around

Another long time lurker

The Views are what makes the site great and Different. JoseQ your site has always been top on the list of alot of peoples favorites =)

Maybe you should start a password system for people to log in comments like the chat. But I can see that being alot of work and maybe not worth it in the long run due to the huge about of visitors from all over the world that come here.

Anyway you got alot of loyal fans that outnumber the lamers.

I'm another long time lurker, and I thought should
chime in with my two cents, too.
EmuViews is, as another poster commented, one of
my few "must-see-daily" sites. Even when you had
Roms, my primary purpose for coming here was the
news and, more lately, to read the comments posted
by other emulation fans.
It's too bad that a few vocal nitwits can spoil the
fun for us oldtimers and the mature newcomers as well.
Anyway, I just wanted to chime in and let you know
how much I appreciate all the work you do on your
site that is so valuble to the "Real" emu community.

Whatever you decide to do about EV, thanks for all
the years of effort you have put into this, JoseQ!

You know, I'd bet that the very worse of the lamers that harass
emulator authors and the emulation web sites are in the employ
of some of the game companies themself. Like Nintendo for
example. Imagine if they were in court against some web site
posting their roms.. How would they convince the jury that they
are being hurt by this web site that is posting Super Mario for
the NES? These companies know they can't do anything so they hire
some pimple-faced kid to flame anyone working on an emulator for
their system, and the sites with their roms. Then they threaten
legal action. Take a look at Sony vs Connectex. Who keeps losing
there? Well the big companies figure the easiest and far less costly
think to do is pay some kid a hundred bucks and tell him who to piss
off. It's working really well too.

From: cpe-24-221-60-151.az.sprintbbd.net
JoseQ, I've been a lurker here for a long time and posted when I thought I had an appropriate comment. I like the comments system, but I'm afraid that even if EmuViews *were* to close, the situation wouldn't be solved to any satisfaction.

As more people join the internet, it seems the average restraint and intelligence decreases. Without EmuViews, they'll just go to the remaining few sites and close them too with their antics.

I'm afraid that making emulation 'mainstream' is the problem in its entirity. Previous to that shift in the community, the people involved were in it for the fun. For the enjoyment of the old consoles, computers, and arcade machines. This is mostly no longer the case.

The 'big names' of the emulation world are now getting harassed for their fame, and we all pay the price for this kind of behavior.

There isn't an easy solution, even if there is one at all. Emulation will never return to being the underground hobby it was, and the people best positioned for changing the views of the people are the authors and the siteops of these news sites.

It's hard to keep an interest with all of the rotten news we've been thrown of late. Final Burn, Rocknes (I understand his position, but I only wish he'd let someone else take over.. it's the most advanced NES emulator around. :/) and the news sites taking a beating..

All I can do is ask you to not give up hope yet. There has to be some way to restore some semblence of sanity.

>Is that in reference to my site? And if so, are you indeed taking a shot at my site?

Good question. I've never been to your site. Let's go through the checklist.

Do you insist that an author's views are reason to continue to flame him, even after an apology is given? Do you advocate flaming people for 'having an ego' based on the previous?

If you answer yes to both, then yes, I'd say your site is covered.

If you answer no, then obviously not. I aim this at nobody in particular-- There are a lot of people who are insisting that people like Dave and Realityman are egotists and the like for taking it hard over the personal attacks.

JoseQ,

I'm glad to see the return of the comments. The content here is what makes EmuViews one of my few "must check daily" sites. I seldom post here, but nearly always read at least some of the comments. Unfortunately, you end up having to take the bad with the good. With any luck, the new moderators will help out. I hope EmuViews continues on for a long time to come. I think there are a lot more appreciative (and probably less vocal) emulation fans out there, than there are lamers. Hopefully, you'll hear from more of us appreciative folks in the future, than the others.

I have some interest in possibly being hosted by Emuviews in the future, but I was afraid that if I submitted my details and was accepted, there might be a small chance of you changing my DNS settings and all hell breaking loose! :-)

I do not need to be hosted at the moment, but might be in the future. So, just please email me back telling me if in the future my site meets your approval. BTW I am posting in here because I am not sure if your email address is JoseQ. The main feature of the site is the board, don't worry about the roms, they are hosted by Fortunecties.

JoseQ, don't let a few lamers ruin everything. Emuviews is awesome, especially the comments. It's what makes the site unique that users can post comments on the news and stuff. User interaction, not only the news makes Emuviews special.

I say hooray for moderators and cleaning up nasty posts. And if that hint of closing other things means the site, I hope it doesn't. Maybe you should delegate more tasks to other people (If you don't do so already). Take a load off =)
