NEWS w/o ICONS

E3: Day 1 - May 17,2001 by JoseQ
Well, since some people seem to want me to post news about what I'm seeing at E3, I'm going to do just that. First I'll try to cover those news related to classic gaming. As mentioned on the other post, there's no bleem! LLC booth this year, and as far as I could tell, Sony is not showing anything related to it's Connectix purchase. I admit I haven't looked a whole lot at Sony's booth yet, but I suspect they might not show anything there.
That sais, let's talk about what did get my attention on the first day of showing. There's a ton of games coming out that not only look great, but seem awfully tempting and interesting. Out of the up and coming consoles, I must say that I am most impressed with the Nintendo Game Cube. They had plenty of games playable after announcing the release date which is almost half a year away. My favorite thus far, is "Super Smash Brothers Melee". I'm incredibly amazed at how fluid the game plays and how very well those polygon based characters look! You can pause the game and pan the camera around and you can see great detail on those characters; yet, when you play, everything flows flawlessly with no slowdown...
Here come the bad news, which are unexpected to say the least. My first Xbox impression? Dissapointed to say the least. Although I spent most of my time at the Nintendo booth trying to win a Gameboy Advance (they are giving away 175 over the weekend) I did see a few Xbox showings. Among them: "Dead or Alive 3" and "Madden NFL 2002". This $299.99 console, while powerful, shows unexpected slowdowns left and right. Electronic Arts had parallel monitors with the Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox versions of the Madden game, and the worst of the bunch was Microsoft's baby.
So even though the Gamecube price has not been announced yet, you can count me in when it comes to this console. Nintendo (like Sega) has a lot of brand name titles that it can put out on a relatively short schedule. With titles like that Smash Bros' one, and great looking "NBA Courtside 2002", "Waverace", incredible looking (haven't played it yet) "Rogue Squadron 2" and other new ones like "Luigi's Mansion" which looks to be something like a Ghostbusters adventure, another one called "Kameo" and more! All of them look very impressive and if Nintendo comes out with it at a decent price, I will definitely be an owner.
As far as the Gameboy Advance, there's also tons of games being shown from plenty of companies. I happened to try the 'Mario Kart' type of game from Nintendo and while it played just like the SNES version, I was surprised that the SNES version looks superior. I will do a more close investigation tomorrow on all those things I didn't see because I was busy playing on the Gamecubes, so expect more news on those things then.

One Article Up: Retrobase does SNES!
One Article Down: Off to E3!!!

I agree. X-Box was shortcoming but Nintendo showed it up. I was particularly interested in Blizzards setup... Warcraft 3 is beautiful and playing it was a defenite seller. The rep even hinted at starcraft 2 for late next year. anyways.. cheers

If you get a chance JoseQ, check out the HanaHo and Act-Labs booths. Those should be pretty cool.

Wish I was there too this year. ; p

I would have sent in some more reviews, but I've been too busy covering E3 news at my other sites.

Buying a PS2 just for DVD's? What a waste of money (and waste of the console's abilities).

Considering the price of standlone DVD players and DVD roms, and the much better Dreamcast console (I know, it's less powerful, but has more and better games), that's just ridiculous!

My DVD-ROM was $30. Works for me.. ; )

Well, like most emulation fans, I'm also a PC gamer. I think a console is only worthy of my money if it offers me something I don't already have. Nintendo and Sega have their own franchises that we will never see on the PC. Sony has some as well.

Microsoft needs to get theirs, and I'm sure they will, but for now, the games they're showing will not make me buy an Xbox.

As far as Nintendo goes, there's no other alternative if you want to play the newest Zeldas, Marios, Metroids, etc...

I guess I'll continue to own every console they launch. I just realized I had even though I thought I had skipped a whole generation of consoles... weird.

I went back today... and I simply have to say that the Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader game is the !@##@$. I was blown over by how fast it played and how graphically it looked as though I was watching the movie. *drools* Experience it =) Once you do, you'll be immersed in an awe of light stage. I've seen the light, and it's definitely Nintendo I'm nominating as having the best stuff of the lot. :) I went back to the Xbox booth to give them a second look, after wandering around for a while, I played the Oddworld game. I was impressed by it a lil bit, graphically it was really nice. How it plays? I don't know really, I was too caught hurrying myself to go back to the nintendo booth to play Pikmin again. :o
Going back day 3 =). More booth babes, more games, more freebees. Isn't life great?

Actually, there are 2 versions of Gamecube, one made exclusively by Panasonic (Mashashita) that will play DVDs as well as Gamecube games. If you want an X-Box for DVDs, you're gonna have to buy the remote, which will cost $50. Gamecube is defintely the way to go, because it's processor is actually equal to, if not more powerful than X-Box's (485Mhz Gekko), and because it will be priced at LESS than $199. Also, if you looked at the new Nintendo games, you would notice there really are no "kiddie" games besides Monkey Ball, Donkey Kong Racing, and Smash Bros Melee (which really isn't a kiddie game).

If most of the GC demos out were in-house titles, and most of the XBox demos were 3rd party titles, then I'm not surprised about the slowdown issues.

I couldn't go to E3 yesterday or today due to having to work. I'm way more excited with the Xbox than Nintendo's system though. The Gamecube, (while being a powerful system) is the weaker of the two from what I hear. Remember that the Xbox is on the DirectX app and slowdown in early beta games should be expected until the games are optimized.

From a co-worker who's working there and got to check out everything yesterday before E3 opened, he said that the Xbox was clearly the more powerful system with better games. I don't care how 'pretty' smash brothers or luigi's ghostbusters game looks... It'll never capture my attention like Halo or DoA 3 will. I'd keep an eye on Microsoft getting the last few developers that are holding out on them early 1quarter of next year. (Can you say Square?)

From: adsl-63-203-155-122.dsl.lsan03.pacbell.n|;
I was at E3 last night and I will go again today. I thought the best games for gamecube were Luigi's Mansion and Rouge Squadron 2.

A lot of the games for the gamecube were just plain kiddy and silly. I thought the xbox games were more fun for adults and serious gamers. If you like kiddy games and you are a Nintendo fan, then you are going to like what you see.

I have a bit more objective opinion. RS2 was just like the Starwars movie, very cool. LMansion was almost too much like Ghostbusters, I mean you might as well call it Ghostbusters, its got great graphics and it looks fun.

Microsoft had "Unreal Championship", which looked stunning as well and then you got Blood Wake, not only looks good, but plays well. Halo with four player on screen play, was sweet....

Nobody really won the show so far, its pretty much a toss up....

i agree i was most impressed with the gamecube. however i didnt notice the slowdown on the games i played. also of the four guys i went with 3 thought the xbox madden was tops my vote was for the gamecube. of all the other ps2 vs xbox ea games we all thought the xbox versions were better. did you notice the bump mapping on the edge of the road in f1 racing the ps2 tried to acomplish the same effect using shading didnt look nearly as good imo. also if you didnt see it check out blood wake for xbox (its at the back of the xbox dispaly) its a combat boat game and the water effects and physics seem to be spot on. my biggest gripe was with the xbox's control it just didnt feel right and the buttons seemed too small. on the other hand the gamecube controller felt great and i liked the layout allot more than i thought i would. i think ill get a gamecube before i get an xbox but i thought both systems looked good.

(Yes, you read that right - PlayStation 3.)

My dad recently attended the latest Siggraph convention, where Sony was showing off the PS3. He said they were demoing the new system's graphics features, and mentioned something about 21 integrated graphics processors. He said one of the demos was a series of fully rendered scenes from the Matrix, which were indistinguishable from the original film.

I'm just wondering if Sony's saying anything about this new console at E3.

The PS3 is a "well-known" machine.. It's only (!?) the PS2 in cluster mode with 21 processors.
It's not a console machine!! It is for developpers because it costs a lost!

When Dad was telling me about this thing, he said that there were four groups of 4 "SI" processors (I don't recall what SI stands for in this case) - 16 there. Each of those groups were coordinated by an SI processor, and those four controllers were then coordinated by an SI processor in a "Master" position. So it's a 3-tier hierarchical structure.

Yeah, something like that would be pretty pricey, even if the costs for the technology itself are going down.

Jose, you didn't spend hardly any time at the xbox booth because you would know that they only showed the final hardware behind closed doors.

Also, two gamecube games that I was watching had to be reset (smash bros) and (eternal darkness) because of crashes and this is on the final hardware for the gamecube (sigh), thats not a good sign.

I'm affraid that both of you are wrong.. The X-Box that was playable.. is NOT an X-box, but an emulation of the X-Box on PC.. The hardware has not been set in stone yet.. so nothing is final yet.

Also..Things crash all the time on software.. doesn't mean the hardware is bad.. I worked in the Capcom booth, and saw serveral PS2 games lock up.. it DOESN'T mean the PS2 is bad!!! You have no idea what your talking about!! These are extremly early alfa versions of software..

Games crash because of software bugs, not hardware issues, so I don't understand your concern.

The sooner a hardware revision is nailed down, the sooner serious software testing can take place.

JoseQ Did you play Halo I have Full Video fraom a secret Show of Halo the full deal and it looked awesome now slow downs and Awesome AI and Weapons. The Game had the best outdoor level's i've ever seen to flying ships droping off troops. To Water and the Sun which the finally got right. Even the tree's and movements are realistic. You have to actually see the stuff in person and JUDGE the games and systems when they are completly done. So don't be Saying "Its all final and sucks" Thats like saying Duke Nukem Forever sucks. Well hope you open your mind take care I am very dissapointed in you

I did mention that I didnt look at the Xbox closely.

I didn't play Halo yesterday and I didnt play it today. It does look great but it's not the type of game I like to play with a gamepad. In my opinion, FPS games should stay on the PC where multiplayer games reign today.

I am fully aware that those games aren't finals, but then again, neither are most of the games shown at E3. They're all E3 versions that will see the public release months from now.

Still, my opinion persists. I'm not saying the Gamecube is better than the Xbox, or that it is more powerful. I'm just saying that at this point in time, what Nintendo showed impressed me more than what Microsoft and 3rd parties are showing.

Maybe it's only a thing of perception. I didn't expect a lot from the Gamecube and I did expect a lot from the Xbox and they ended up being comparable. So I'm impressed and dissapointed respectively. On paper the Xbox looks so good it should not display any slowdown like that. It might just be that programmers are pushing the envelope too far and are trading frame rate for graphic quality, which I don't agree with. I would much rather have a watery fluid feel, rather than the best looking graphics. Drop the polygons, drop the texture sizes, do whatever, but keep the framerate up. Again, like everything I type on my site, that's my opinion and I don't expect everyone to agree with me, or think of me as the final word on everything. There's plenty of writeups on E3, you've just read mine.

Don't be disappointed in him! He's just reporting what he saw! If there were slowdowns in the betas, then there were slowdowns in the betas! I'm sure every intelligent gamer will wait to see the finished product him/herself and make the choice best for them. Don't bash Jose for being impressed by the Nintendo display.

Myself, I'm hoping the XBox games shape up... It's the system I'm currently planning on buying. I'm not considering the Nintendo at this point because it can't play DVDs.

Surprisingly good. There's two triggers like the Dreamcast, but they're easier to get to, and there's also another button atop the controller which was odd, but it's there.

I think the button layout is pretty clever making the big button be the main button, and the red button be the cancel. Now you don't need to remember which one is usually used for cancelling, etc. And for most games, you will always know which is the button to use to do the main action. I like it.

The weird semi analog pointing stick on the right, I never used, so I don't know... Apparently it's used for panning the camera in some games... Overall, I had no troubles using it.
