MAME 0.37b15! - May 24,2001 by JoseQ
After one of the longest waits for a new version of MAME ever, Nicola releases today version 0.37b15 of the biggest arcade emulator in existence. You can get this new binary from the Emulator Download Page. This is the first Win32 version which takes advantage of graphic hardware acceleration among other things. This version also fixes the 68020 emulation that prevented many Taito F3 games from working, thanks to Bryan McPhail. Here's the list of new games as listed in the whatsnew.txt file:

  • Power Play [Aaron Giles]
  • Neck & Neck [Aaron Giles]
  • Shuffleshot [Aaron Giles]
  • Elevator Action Returns [Bryan McPhail]
  • Darius Gaiden [Bryan McPhail]
  • Puzzle Bobble 4 [Bryan McPhail]
  • Land Maker [Bryan McPhail]
  • Twin Qix [Bryan McPhail]
  • Gekiridan [Bryan McPhail]
  • Magic Bubble [Luca Elia]
  • J. J. Squawkers [Luca Elia]
  • Go Go! Mile Smile [Luca Elia]
  • Bang Bang Ball [Luca Elia]
  • Jitsuryoku!! Pro Yakyuu [Luca Elia]
  • Clash Road [Luca Elia]
  • Dommy [David Haywood]
  • Ixion [David Haywood]
  • Vandyke [David Haywood]
  • Tunnel Hunt [Phil Stroffolino, Owen Rubin]

Thanks to D@Z for the news!

JoseQ, thanks for letting us know about Adf Informatique, I got my hotrod yesterday, cost me 180 and it's worth every penny, I just wish it didn't take up so much space.

    Subject: WinMAME vs MAME32
    From: cc897980-a.arden1.ca.home.com
Ok, the difference between MAME32 (simplified).. They are NOT the same thing. What's happened is that the MAME team is now doing their development on Win32 rather than in DOS, this means you'll get support for graphics acceleration (blitting, scaling, etc) written into the core that you couldn't get with MAME DOS or even MAME32 (imagine the Afterburner driver using hardware blitting and scaling for the sprites rather than doing it with software - don't know if they'll do it that way, but it should at least be possible now)
MAME32 can use some basic acceleration functions, but not like what would be possible if MAME was written for it to begin with) Other than that, it's still a command line application, it's just written to use the Win32 enviroment now.

This also means that MAME's performance will depend on your video card more than it used to. So get with the late 90's and throw out that old Trident 9000 based 4 meg SVGA card, a TNT2 only costs around $40 now.

As to why they can'd do that in DOS, it's because there is really no standard for those functions (beyond some very basic acceleration functions in VESA 3.0), each card does it differently, if you were to use DOS, you'd have to write support for each card. Windows abstracts the hardware and provides a standardized interface for this so you don't have to worry about it. You just say "I want to blit this from here to there" and Windows and the drivers for your video card handle it.

the newest version of MAME b15 (MAMEW) is now made using Windows tools so is a Windows program. You can still get the old DOS version too.

MAME32 is different - it has a game selection interface and drop-down menus. The new MAMEW doesn't, it's literally a port of the DOS version into Windows but with no interface additions.

don't fear, the fix is coming. All System16 games pixel perfect for the first time ever? Thunderblade with road layers? Encrypted games like Turbo Outrun, Line of Fire and Super Monaco GP?

All of these are rumoured to be on the way.

Patience, all will come good in the end.

So far, on my Celery 466, this seems to actually be a WHOLE lot faster than the DOS or MAME32 versions I've tried.

I can't wait to see how this runs when I get my 1.2ghz!

    From: dsl-64-130-183-9.telocity.com
Okay, I tried both the Win32 and the DOS versions on my system, and I noticed that the Win32 version runs at maybe half the speed of the DOS version. (Average frameskip on a complex game, like Puzzle Bobble 4 or Smash TV, was about 4-5 in Win32, and was at only about 1 for PB4 in DOS, full speed for SmashTV.)

The only major difference I could see in the Win32 version was the hardware filtering that made the screen look blurry, whereas the DOS version had the traditional hard-edged pixels.

One other note: Apparently nobody has the Taito F3 sound emulation down yet. Raine still seems to be the most faithful soundwise, but games like PB3 and PB4 totally fall apart under MAME. After playing for only about a minute, the system starts looping through the whole sound bank, which both slows everything down and sounds *REALLY* weird. This happens to some extent in Raine as well, but it's not as bad there.

Sounds like they've got a ways to go yet. =) But very cool, nonetheless.

oh, another thing.. I can't audit my games on Emuloader. I get an ERROR! message:
"Access violation at address 01924A1A. Read of address 00AD5D81"

This occurs about 80% through the audit. Anyone knows what causes this?
After this message, the front end is froze till I close it out.

I just loaded EmuLoader and it seems to work
so far other than the little glich when I select
a game, it always tells me the game isn't there,
then it goes and loads it anyway. The one thing
that is mind-boggling is that this front end has
so many new features, but like ALL other front
ends, you CAN'T MAP THE BUTTONS ON A CONTROLLER.
I really don't think the people that make these
front ends or MAME itself actually play the games.
They put in the joystick support, but didn't even
think twice about how the buttons are set. Just
try playing Mortal Kombat on a Sidewinder and you'll
see what I mean. Every button needs to be remapped
to make it playable. I know people are going to say
"You idiot, why not edit the config file" Well, why
not just run the thing in pure dos with all the long
commands? A front end is supposed to take care of that.
All other emulators have button/joystick mapping.

But a front end is not an emulator is it. It merely sends MAME the commands to run. Control mapping is not sent via coomands, but through the MAME menu itself.

It's because the number of games exceeds the table limit. A@H is made from Visual Basic and has limits. Go to www.mameworld.net/emulaoder and download EMuLoader forntend. It it MANY times better than A@H. I used to use A@H until I found EMuLoader. Plus the author is a lot more friendlier than Tim. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
