The Rumor Mill! - June 10,2001 by JoseQ
Howdy! And welcome to the late edition of The Rumor Mill. Like I always say, it's better late than never. I have been quite busy this week and I'm finally getting a breather, so I decided to post The Rumor Mill although I don't know what effect this will have on the next Rumor Mill. Hopefully I'll be able to gather some goodies for you next Wednesday as well... We'll see. For now, let's look and what's in the bag. I've got: some info on NamcoNB1 emulation as well as the MonacoGP simulator I mentioned earlier, some dirt on Mimic, Xega, Bliss, and RockNES X2. So let's get it on!
On the NamcoNB1 emulation I actually received a few screenshots on the report. I'll post the links to those in a bit. First a status report. NamcoNB1 emulation is progressing nicely, the sprite system is a bit on the complex side, but the author seems to have figured it out. However, there's still a lot to do since it also requires emulation of Namco's custom CPU. The author hopes to have it be playable fairly soon. Here are the WIP screenshots:

"MonacoGP" simulation is also coming along nicely. It compiles as a MAME driver although we all know that it won't make it as an official driver, just like what happened to "Pong". It is quite possible that it is released as a source package so that it's compiled by someone else (I'm sure somebody will step up to the plate for that). There's about 600K (zipped) worth of sound samples for this driver. There's still a few things that need to be fixed like for example the computer car appearance frequency. Details like these, might actually end up in a configuration file so that you can tweak it without having to recompile the emulator. This would help as people who have the original can tweak the emu side by side with the actual machine and the most accurate config file can be made 'official' or something of the sort.
On the Mimic front, I got some info that wasn't posted on the update today. SystemE emulation may see a decrypted "Astroflash" soon as we've caught Mike working on that. After his initial tests, it seems the custom Z80 is similar to those used in the System1 games, so it might turn out to be just like "Transformers". The other part of the report was actually posted on the website today.
Moving along to Xega, Michel seems to be busy working on the compatibility of this new emulator (which actually boasts some great compatibility rates!). Working with the H-interrupts, he has been able to improve some games that had some messed up graphics before. I guess we could probably see a release soon but that's just speculation. I'll post info on this every week hopefully.
I also have some new screenshots on that SystemC emulator I talked about earlier. There's an FPS counter on these shots and they are all using scanlines as well. Results are based on a K7-700MHz with 512MB RAM using Linux Mandrake 8.0. CPU usage is actually small with a barely noticeable load for other users on the system. Here are the screenshots:

On the Bliss newsfront I really don't have much. We did sniff Kyle downloading the source and importing it into a newly installed Mandrake Linux... I'm not sure what the results of this will be, but we'll learn about it soon enough. However, we have seen him work on Atari 5200 emulation as that remains his first priority.
On RockNES X 2, pretty much the same story. Not much, but you will be happy to learn that Beta 3 should be happening soon, along with a new DOS version. MacOS users should not fear as you will get your RockNES candy soon as well.
Well, that's all for this edition of The Rumor Mill. I'm sorry it took so long. Hopefully this week I'll have a more relaxed time than last time... Until next week, Qmeister signs off and thanks for reading!

First - JoseQ, great job! keep it up.
Second - not only would I like to see emus for the Jaguar, 32x, but some other consoles not yet emulated - like the saturne & 3DO (I'm aware of many saturne project but none are quite good enough yet!) - Heck even a Dreamcast emu since it's been "discountinued".

What happened to all the Jaguar EMU's in development??? I'm jonsin' for Tempest 2000...Really BAD!!

My actual Jaguar finally died. So I can't play it any more... :(

PS....Has anyone (in the US that didn't get an import) get a Game Boy Advance yet?? I got mine this morning... Castlevania, is BEAUTIFUL!! I would highly recommend this as your first GBA title. Tony Hawk is also very good, but with the 3/4 view, it's tons harder than the PSX or DC version.

I'd say Jag a little more so, because they are bit rarer...and besides they're roms are small enough to have uploaded to an ftp...and the ISO's for saturn are huge...

What the hell.. I thought this guy was going to take his site down. What a liar. Is anybody else going to go back on what they say? Might as well since everybody seems to be doing it.

JoseQ never said he was taking the site down. He simply made it unavail for a few days while he made changes. There was an erroneous posting over at Retrogrames which stated that JQ had taken the site down. This is where the confusion came from.

Be thankful it isn't down and just enjoy the info

What's the story with 32x emulation. Is it impossible to emulate or something? Or is attempting 32x emulation a waste of time? I like some information on it.

32X emulation certainly IS possible. Just take a look at Ages or retroDrive. They both emulate the 32x.
