1st World Video Game Champion! - June 11,2001 by JoseQ
Over the weekend, Twin Galaxies crowned the first ever World Video Game Champion! Dwayne Richard of Calgary, Alberta, Canada is the man, after winning it all at the first annual World Video Game Championship which took place this past weekend at the Funspot Family Fun Center in Weirs Beach, NH. They had to play "Donkey Kong", "Frogger", "Pole Position", "Qix", "Joust", "Robotron" and "Wizard of Wor" and their scores were averaged into percentiles, adding them up to their final score. Check this, the second place was only .92 of 1 percentile behind the winner! The players actually put in their ballots to select which games would be played at next years championship! They will be "Galaxian", "Carnival", "Elevator Action", "Crystal Castles", "Arkanoid", "Donkey Kong Jr." and "Tempest". Fire up your favorite arcade emulator and start practicing! If you want to know more, check out this article at Twin Galaxies.

Why don't each country with willing competitors set up their own little sub-comp, and tally all the scores on-line?

Man, this *IS* the 21st century after all... :-)

Perhaps its the thought of Iraq, the UK, USA, USSR and China duking it out in the final rounds of the Missile command tournament that puts people off that kind of thing.

I do remember him... He was the Nintendo World Champion, not the video game champion. That was an NES competition held by Nintendo. I wanted to compete, but living in Puerto Rico made it tough since they never went there. =(

Yet another "world championship" that is only open to americans. Why don't the people who name these things pick up a dictionary and learn. But as the american song goes "We are the world"

Havig personally attended this tournament for the last two years, I can testify that people from around the world have attended. People have come from as far away as England, Finland, & Israel, not to mention the large group that comes from Canada.

Open to Americans only? WRONG! Get a life. What a stupid thing to complain about.

True, but if the contest were to be held in a different place, say England, there would be considerably less americans in the contest now, wouldn't there ? So in this case America had a huge advantage, and lots of other talented players in other countries who couldn't get there didn't even have a chance. But then again, the same would happen no matter what country it were held in. Local boys will always have the advantage. Didn't france win the soccer/football world cup ? O jeez, I'm starting to talk irrelevant shit again, sorry guys...

If you look at the twin galaxies emblem it states "Video game capital of the universe". How do they know that? My guess is that there are distant planets within our galaxy that have much better video games and players. In fact Im willing to bet that there are aliens who have been playing the same game of DigDug for over a thousand years.

Which of the 50 states or various territories of the United States is Calgary, Alberta, Canada located in? I can't find it on my United States map.

Im a brit living in arizona who constantly listens to shopkeepers asking "Oh you're British, which country in Britain are you from, New Zealand?"

You should pass them a copy of your well thumbed map.

Sorry, you'll have to blame our public school system. We are taught very little about Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, and the rest of the Empire of Japan until we get to college. All of the entry level college U.S. history courses devote at least a week to Japan's surprise nuclear attack on the Alamo, which prompted us to enter the Viet Nam war. I'm grateful that Turkey bailed us out of that one, because even with that silly "I before E except after C" rule, I really do enjoy speaking American.
