Mame Incompatible - October 31,1998 by JoseQ
Unfortunately, some of the biggest classics will probably never be emulated. We are probably years awaybefore we can have a shot at some super classic gameslike Dragon's Lair, Time Warp, Space Ace and others. Now, thanks to Shane Monroe of MonroeWorld.Com we can at least take a peekat the Attract Mode movies of those games. For this you willneed the latest G2 incarnation of Real Video/Audio. Thefile sizes exceed the 4MB area, so you will probably needsome patience as well. The quality of the videos is amazingand you will enjoy seeing them once again.
If you are interested in playing these games once again,DigitalLeisure, proud owner of the rights to those games, hasreleased a PC-DVD version of Dragon's Lair which should beas close to the arcade as you could get. As you may know,DVD offers same or better quality than Laserdisc, so ifeverything was done right, it should be an arcade perfecttranslation. If you don't mind not arcade perfect, but youdefinitely want the games, there's a 3-pack containing allthe games in 2 CD ROMs. Extremely interesting thing togo for.
There has been talks around the Internet, and probablyaround MAME as well, about having these videos compressedjust like this, and having an emulator that triggers thesemovie files, instead of how they did it in the actualhardware. Possible? Yes, Easy? No... It would be an arduoustask, and ROM files of this kind would be inmense. Probablyin two years, a few hundred MBs or a few Gigs is consideredsmall, and then it would be more feasible. For now we justhave to sit down and drool at these videos. I suggest yougo there and download them, you won't be dissapointed.
