Magic Engine News! - November 07,2002 by JoseQ
A pretty lengthy update happened today at the Magic Engine website. The winner of the October CD-ROM contest was announced and then quite a bit of news. Development of version 0.9x has been frozen, and efforts are now routed to the 1.0 development tree. While this new version won't have as many features right off the bat, it will include some nifty changes, like the ability to control INI settings from within the emulator. There's also a possibility that a movie recording option is added.
The major news come from a new development that has been secretly going on since the beginning of last summer. Alas, there was no Rumor Mill then to uncover this, but that may change soon. The new project target's a new console that they're not naming just yet. Instead, they are showing screenshots from three different games and are running a bit of a contest. If you can name all three games (they look Japanese by the way), and the console, you will enter a 5 person drawing for a free registered version of the new emulator. Check out the website for the pretty nice looking screenshots to see if you can identify the games.

Looks like this thing can turn into a huge debate !!! At least this emu has much better compatibilty than bleem ever had. Still, why complain about paying when there is other free PC/Engine emus out there. The choise is yours... just remember that $25 is cheaper then a new console game nowadays and think of the amount of games you can play on it...

Dexter/Nakashiro,

If you want your posts to stay on the comments section, you need to post with a little nicer English. Bad words are not tolerated and will cause the posts to be deleted.

As for selling the emulator, I'm all for it. I'm not going to buy it, but if you create a good product, and I believe Magic Engine is one, I think you're entitled to make a little money from it. Alas, at $25, it's not nearly enough for what a programmer would charge for the time invested in this software.

Compare that to M$ selling Windows at $100 with millions of copies, whereas MagicEngine probably sells in the hundreds (probably less), at $25. I think it barely covers his hosting charges...

Just my opinion. =)

Joseq, happy to see your replies back :-)
yes i understand that the time he not pay for his intelligence, but how many for their intelligence to make an emulator must get money for that?
and if be is an incomplete beta,i want not pay,if after a while i see another beta of a emulator
and it is just my opninion
if a developing of a emulator is full version,i'm with you and all i pay for have that, thinking i have the full that any game i open on it run,and speed as equal to the speed of the named console(in this case pcengine/cd),that is why developer show his/her skills to us to do exercise i think!that is because i think it give to us for free
for mame,i follow this direction,because i don't
understand why ,for take an example mame is the one arcade emulator who absorb any old emulator,callus,neorage,m72/92,but the level of callus the emu, emulate a game nearest arcade perfection and was old emulator build first mame show to public
i wriet that because want to understand who and why,if a program was absord by another program, the first(callus) running slow than the last(mame)
i compare to others emu,are absorbing into mame program listing code
or the mame team mainly goal is to get thousand game to run,but the quality and the speed slow
howewer a beta must be gived for free,if any developer want to get pay for his creation must give full and not only for the compatibility, but too for speed, and if don't like me and other who thinking what i think,he must developing his emu,and see him result and him have to test his creation and not every man around the world(mame politic)
all of them use us as ntester, and us want that because want to spend our free time, waiting our wife,or girlfriend when get nude in front of us!
i'm not a tester of such anything,i want pay anyone developing a emu,but emu must be perfectmno other updates on that emu have to be done!
with that i close my conclusion, and thankz to all¨
forgive me and continue to do emu test over test and happy to do that!

nakashiro nishimoto

joseq your site are the best and for the best site around the net, that is because i'm here
do not quit :-)
we want you up!
no insult were done,in nextet post, but many people there are almost all childrens
and i don't tolerate when i hear that emu is best or things like that, when the emu not run pac-man correctly and stable at the arcade frame rate on a pentium4!

And I do feel an author has the right to sell it btw. They are not selling someone else's work. A work produced by reverse engineering is considered a new work (from a legal point of view). Well, at least anything made before the DMCA went into effect.

Plus it's an obsolete system with no commercial viability. So it isn't like anyone is losing potential profits here.

This isn't like Bleem where it could be argued that earnings were being diverted from those who who rightfully deserved it.

Sure, it would be nice if Magic Engine was being given away, but for the price being asked, it's more than fair imo.
A *lot* of time & effort obviously went into developing it.

i've tested the trial version of MagicEngine and i find it, without any shadow of a doubt, the best emulator for the PCEngine. allas, nothing's perfect, thus, this emulator has a catch... you have to pay for it. is it expensive? not really! is it worthy? well... if you're a complete madman about the PCEngine, maybe it is, but for the rest of us, i don't really think so. i had a PCEngine + circa 50 games for about a month (it was borrown to be by a dear freind that's not with us anymore...) and i found that small console to be quite amazing, so i had a real interest on an emulator. i tested several of them and MagicEngine is the best. it's a pitty taht we have to pay. i didn't bought it, i won't buy it, but after trying MagicEngine you won't be happy with any PCEngine emulator (for now, at least) because MagicEngine is almost perfect.

i think it is stupid charging for the emulator, this guy did not make this console and i wonder how nec would feel about it,this guy is making money off of something he did not create.yes he created the emulator,he did not create the console.emulators should be free.it reminds of that ines or gameboy emulator where you have to pay like $25 or some stupid crap like that.these are the type of people that are killing the emu scene.just my opinion
