Where is JoseQ? Pt 2 - January 08,2003 by JoseQ
I guess I missed my deadline by a few days... Unfortunately I had a little accident on my 'vacation' in which my notebook computer and the law of gravity were involved. In it, I lost a lot of valuable data that I've been trying to recollect for the past few days since I got back home, as well as building myself a new computer to work on. I still have a lot of work to catch-up to, so it should be a few days before I resume posting news. I apologize for the inconvenience, and hopefully I'll be back very soon.

Yea I totally agree - there are many people who could help restore this site to its former glory. This would really take the emphasis and responsibility off of Jose Q's shoulders.

By the way - why are there so many questions and not any satisfactory answers? Someone must know something somewhere!

why do you keep refering to "we"? we all know you're just ONE guy and that you say that you have a "crew" in order to look cool (and to try to overide the MAME crew in your imagination).

i must admit that you'd make a fabulous study case.

judging solely by your written speech, i gather that (together with the confabulatory paranoic disorder [with maniac traces]) you have the urge to throw random numbers in your speech. that's a curiouse aspect! that phenomenom is mainly visible in schizofrenia.

oh... and World War One ended in 1918.

Hey Kiefer,

I agree that this board needs some cleaning up around here! Then again I have put across some very valid points - and whether it is because I have lost half my mind, or people have explained it before, are sick of explaining it and don't want to again - or a choice of the both of them! - I wonder what the hell is going on with the roms.

I know that Jose Q is doing his best to get this site up and running, I wish him all the best, and take back my selfish accusation. This place doesn't need disruption but moderation - still could someone please enlighten me and others like me as the situation?

Thanks

It's amazing to me just how utterly clueless, tasteless and heartless some people can be. JoseQ, could you please make it a priority to restore the moderator stuff so people like me can make sure people like Mr. Nakashiro never post here again? I'm seriously tired of that guy, especially with his trying to impersonate you and making these pointless accusations against you.

Have I lost my mind? 1p per rom? Fair enough, there could be a lot higher price - retail prices. However, those have come and gone. [The developers have been paid and mercedes are being driven]

The games are rotting away in a vault somewhere. Now, say we have 100 people downloading one rom there is 1 pound for you there. Now, increase this by the amount of roms out there, which are around 1 million or so; then multiply the amount of people that would enjoy playing these games; you have millions of dollars being made, by just letting out a rom at a penny [10 pence or a pound either] - I wouldn't mind paying for that!

Now increase that penny to a pound, then you realise how much potential there is in rereleasing the roms for eveyrone!.

How about it Sony - Nintendo etc? You've already done the damage how about picking up the pieces - would love a reply from anyone in authority.

in fact copyright stands much longer (20 yrs if I'm not wrong) so why should they accept - for free - limitations to their own rights ?

Rommstein, knowing that software companies needed to make money, how come they haven't decided to rerelease arcade perfect software - with some kind of security so that people can't rip them?

The hardware is already out there - why don't they themselves make the sites and make us pay for their roms?

I can understand with the extoritonate prices of PS2 and X-box software, that people became very tempted to download, but as this is the case, then why don't they employ or take over Jose's site and then put them up there. Now, for 1p per Rom or $0.01 per rom, then people will have to pay them.

Just because the sites are down, doesn't mean to say that there are many other people in this World who still have the software on thier machines. Unfortunately people like myself, who are of the 'old school' where Bombjack Galaga and Galaxian were the latest games. In some cases far more complex and challenging than those we play today.

Software is out there, know-how is all there, it is all setup - why can't Sega Nintendo etc, just take up the sites and make us pay for them?

I came to the site today to update my mirror and noticed it doesn't have jack squat any more - he took the roms off :P So that is why I'm offering.

If any of you are into music, I have several hundred thousand tunes - most organized by band in separate files, and by style. Let me know if you are into swapping music instead. I make my living in the audio business so am very into music - games I am not as into but it's fun once in a while :)

Subject: Re: Why Part 2
From: pr7-ts.telepac.pt

As you can see the frontier between 'nostalgia' and 'warez' became undefined and, as such, the big league boys (Nintendo, Sony, Sega,...) were forced to take position and try to shutdown all roms sites regardless of their content, even if they only had old games not available in stores. And I can understand that for a reason : if Nintendo accepted the free downloading of NES games it would sort of make a 'timetable' for the future : one could think in 4 years all gameboy titles could be downloaded for free, in 8 years all GBA games, and so on (that was only an example). But in fact copyright stands much longer (20 yrs if I'm not wrong) so why should they accept - for free - limitations to their own rights ?

After the Nintendo threats (that also plagued EV) several sites were shut down but after a while others took their place in a more threatning way because they now offer 'next week games' for consoles still in the market (GBA, PSX, Dreamcast) and arcade games launched less than 2 years ago (e.g. : Rise of the dragon, KOF2001 & 2002,...). One has to think this is no longer the quest for the games we used to play when we were younger, but simply piracy, trying to get that new hot game everybody's talking about for free, jeopardazing the prospects of several software houses who depend on games revenue to survive.

So you see how fast we passed from an 'innocent' hobby that could contribute to videogame history and preservation (k7, tapes or electronic circuits used in old videogames tend to go faulty and, eventually, games like pac-man on the arcades, manic miner/jet set willy on the zx spectrum and all the other references you could think of would be lost for ever if it wasn't for the emulation hardcore fans) to another bunch of lawless pirates authors of a crime as soon as we download even an obscure game for an obscure system of the eighties no one else cares about.

That is why I think emulation evolved too much and too fast for it's own sake and I'm positive EV won't ever be the same, no matter how much time or bandwith Q gives it...

Still, there are good news for rom leechers everywhere : there are lots of peer-to-peer programs available that let you get almost everything you want (Soul Seeker, kazaa, bear-share,...) and that's a safer way - for the moment - to get music and files that otherwise could get you, your ISP or the emulation site owner in trouble.

Subject: I have all the Jose-Q roms
From: 0-1pool106-245.nas42.los-angeles2.ca.us.Py>west.net
Hello,

I downloaded all zips the Jose-Q roms as of 9-2-2001. There are 5,248 files, arranged in the original directory structure. I did not download the web pages or screen shots (who cares about that shit :P)

5,241 of them are the ROMS and stuff, at 2.03 gigs, and 17 of them are combined Wrapster files of MAME roms, A, B, C, Q-R, etc. at 304 megabytes. Total space required to copy is approximately 2.4 gigs all told.

If anyone would like, I can provide you with a copy of this material for posting to the internet - preferably to a foreign site without all the paranoid American B.S..

I expect other users to do the same - by combining material with this site - and eventually there can be a resource with ALL the ROMS and emulators EVER in one single beautiful glorious website without a lot of excess BS :)

Email me at michaelissoamazing@hotmail.com You must send me a link to the web space you plan to host this too (foreign country is best so you don't go paranoid like Jose) OR you can approach me with your own special offers (NO MONEY PLEASE!). I do enjoy to review full versions of fancy software - games would be nice too! I have over a terrabyte of space on my PC so space is not an issue. You can send me a spare drive for swapping purposes with you and it will be sent back with the stuff, and everyone's peachy :)

Get in contact with me soon.

I agree. I think that he still wants the fame he had before. "Jose [was and] is a very respected member of the emuviews scene" I agree.

This site shows that the rom appearance has finally died out after its great appearance. It is disappointing that JoseQ won't be honest with us - that he was forced to close down.

What's more shameful is that the developers won't for a few cents, yen pence, pesatas, etc, release their roms to the general public.

There's megabux to be made by making roms available to us, and even if they only charge $0.01 per rom, they would be raking in more money than selfishly letting them all rot away....

It's a mad world :os
