Official MSX Emulator! - January 17,2003 by JoseQ
I think this is probably a first... A platform emulator which officially sanctioned, albeit only for use in Japan. MSX Resource Center reports in this article that you can download a trial version from the MSX Magazine Website. Apparently the print edition of this and other MSX magazines will include the emulator, but because of (you're going to love this) Microsoft copyright restrictions, it cannot be distributed outside of Japan. I'm not sure how Microsoft got involved in this project, but it's in it somehow. Check out the MSX Resource Center article for all the details. Thanks to Sander Zuidema for the news.

First the magazines are already sold out in Japan. They both came with MSX Player (the emulator's name) and some games. A second batch of MSX Magazine should be out. Again, officially you can only buy this magazine in Japan.

Microsoft owns the copyright of MSX's BIOS, and so, noone can make a new MSX without their consent. Also, MSX Basic and MSX DOS1 (not DOS2) were made by Microsoft. Nishi (former head of ASCII corporation and now the head of MSX Association) still hopes to get Microsoft to release the BIOS patent, so they can make the emulator free.

In the past, Microsoft joined up with ASCII to develop one computer to be "the" standart computer. They were soon joined by Sony, Panasonic, Yamaha, among others. This computer become MSX.

Now, the MSX Association claims that they will build a new MSX, a "one-chip-msx capable of running Linux and running old MSX games". What seems to be is that they will use an ARM cpu and some MSX emulator to run the MSX programs.

What this machine will be (and if it will be) noone really knows for sure.
And because of the lack of news from Japan regarding this and the behaviour of MSX Association towards the users who supported MSX all this years, a Manifesto against this was made at http://www.msxall.com

Well, I hope I've summed up everything ^_^

Microsoft was one of the original partners in the MSX standard years ago. If I remember, they supplied the version of basic and elements of MSX-DOS....
