New ROM Scripts! - December 18,1998 by JoseQ
I am very proud to announce the new ROM pages which arecreated by a re-written roms.cgi. This occured thanks tothe suggestions of Troutman whom mentioned thatslow connections made those pages take forever to load. WellI managed to add some more functionality as well as addinga "Just Names, no Crap" ROMs Lite page which runs on a double column layout. Here's the lowdown on the new additions to the ROMs page.
The regular ROMs page currently works very similar tothe old one. One difference you might quickly notice is theelimination of the "Letters" image, which was replaced bya Select box to jump direct to the letters. That is a JavaScript enabled select box, so if many of you don't havethat capability, just let me know and I'll adda couple of shortcuts for you.
Another thing that I worked hard on, was to get thefilters to stick a little better. If you choose to start from one letter but later on decide to filter by version, the letter filter will stick. You can also now turn somefields On or Off, so for instance if you want to save onbandwidth, you can take the Version and Size fields off,so that when you scroll through the pages, you don't needto load those again. It might look simple but it might saveyou a couple of Kilobytes per page.
The ROMs Lite page I think will be the most popular. Init you can filter simply by emulator or letter, but you canfit twice as many ROMs per page so it's easier to browse orfind what you're looking for. Update! I justadded the Version filter in the ROMs Lite Page so that you have all thefunctionality of the other page as well! Thanks to Troutman for the suggestions. His suggestions were received just two days ago, and I want to mention again that I'm very open to suggestions. If you have any, just let me know!
Oh, another little touches to the main page scripts (also thanks to Troutman). The Main Page is now a little moreintelligent in that when displaying the article previews,if the complete article is just a few words longer, it willthen just display them there without the need to clickon the [more...] just to read a few words. The "News w/o Icons" page was also modified to fit twice the amount of thearticles on the main page. Thanks to TheKorn for thosesuggestions, and thanks to everyone for visiting!
