Jas-Sys1 coming soon! - January 12,1999 by JoseQ
What many people have been waiting for, got into my hands today for testing purposes. The Namco System 1emulator being worked on by none other than JROK ofJAS fame, is close to being released in public betaform. I got a chance to test this today, and I can sayit plays incredibly well. I had a couple of chats withthe author in the new #retrogamers channel on EfNet andcame up with a few news bits you might be interested inreading about this new and upcoming emulator.
The emulator, which will be called JAS-SYS1, willcome in stand alone form, initially with Pac-Mania support.I played this game and it played great, full speed usingabout 70% of the CPU on my PII-400. So expect to need moreor less a PII-266 to play near close to full speed.
It requires the Scitech Display Doctor since it runs in400x300 resolution. I recommend downloading the DOS versionsince that's all you will need and many people have hadbad experiences with Scitech messing up with the Windowsdisplay.
As far cs sound is concerned, it didn't play the musicbut had the sound effects enabled. The emulator in itselfruns through a setup screen much like those found in Doomand Duke3d for DOS. From it you can setup your sound card, joystick and/or keys to play using the keyboard.
For an alpha, I must say it plays real good. And I havebeen told by the author himself, that we could expect thatbeta release pretty soon. It seems that once again JROKwill be the pioneer with a much awaited game. First it waswith JAS and its Gaplus / Pac-Land emulation, and now PacMania. Kudos to JROK on his incredible work, and keep your eye on EmuViews for an upcoming InterView with him.
