EV News - February 02,1999 by JoseQ
With all these things happenings in the last fewdays, I have forgotten I used to post Miscelaneous newsevery once in a while. First thing I've noticed is a lotof writings and reactions coming up about EmulationLegality, and different points of views from variouspersonalities of the scene. First one I saw, thanks toEmu News was a writing by Rich Lawrence, author of Atari800Win which obviously emulates an Atari 800computer. He has written a very interesting article, references included, on Legalities of Emulation. In it he coversall the aspects of emulation, from writing one, to usingone. Very interesting read.
Another article published at VideoGames.Com, whichI found thanks to Retrogames has Riley Russell, one of Sony's legal counsel, talking about thevery important Sony vs. Connectix case which might be thefirst case to set the tone on the legality of emulatorsin general. In it he mentiones how Sony will "take actionagainst anyone who releases an emulator for profit". Alsovery interesting read.
Finally, the scene has been in major spotlights latelyas Wired Magazine didan article on the UltraHLE scandal, including quotesfrom Emulators Unlimited's ManBeast. Other popular computer gamingsite published an article very quick after the release. IGN.COM publishedthis article in which they quote the UltraHLE authors andtheir stand against piracy and ending the project.
It is indeed a very interesting time we are living in,probably a time when emulation will finally start facing thelaw, and getting a true definition of where it's supposedto be and stay. Only time will tell what the gaming worldholds for us. Thanks for reading!
