Freeing ROMs? - June 06,1999 by JoseQ
Some late good news that I hadn't mention. Jay Fenton, has grabbed the rights to his game, Robby Roto, andgladly made it public domain. This means that this gameis legally free for you to download and use on yourfavorite emulators. And who says emulators sole purposeis to play illegal ROMs? But more importantly, could thisstart a trend?
We all know that many game authors feel good aboutemulation, and would gladly release their rights to theirgames, or more likely, make them publically available forpeople to download. To me, an old game without emulationis as good as dead, and releasing it is giving it new andpretty much permanent life. With old games dying anddecreasing in value, it would come as no surprise, thatthe rights to them are being sold, relatively cheapif you know where to look. I know of one or two people whowould gladly spend some cash to free those games. Thiswould be a very important step towards making sureemulation moves to legal grounds and sits comfortably tostay in its place. I hope more and more of these games makeit out and get a new lifespan. Game Developers, take JayFenton as your model example.
