System16 DirectX Beta Tease! - June 14,1998 by JoseQ
Well sorry for teasing you guys, but I just thought I'dcomment on the new System 16 Windows port beta. I receivedit earlier today and after playing a couple different gamesI can say that this version will rock you. It surely delivers everything that I expected.
Just wanted to comment if you wanted to know what toexpect. I got equal or better performance in Full Screeneven running with VSYNC activated. Meaning DX version withVSYNC ran better for me than DOS with no vsync. I playedShinobi (my favorite) and actually thought it was runningalong faster than supposed to. When I ran the DOS versionto verify, it was the same, yet I got no tearing in thegraphics like the non-VSYNC version.
I don't know if this is caused by much better Windows performance on Pentium Pro machines (like mine), or byDirectX optimizations to my Matrox Millenium Card. Bestcase scenario, if your Video Card supports certain optimizations, you can be sure DirectX will use them, whereasthat doesn't happen in DOS versions with VESA drivers.
As for the questions you may have... The 4 new gamesThierry added to S16 are not present, since this is a portof System 16 version 0.78. Is the little surprise in? Itis not in the beta BUT it is being implemented andwill be IN the release which should be days away. What is it? I can't tell you, but Oh do I wish I had someextra money to enjoy that special feature. Be sure afterthe wedding I'll save my money for it.
All in all I am more than pleased, and I can safelysay you will have this emulator in your desktop prettysoon since as for bugs, I have found none whatsoever. Bartman just wants to make sure its a pretty much perfectport before letting this baby out. Release date? Preliminary date is June 20th. Check back withEV for it when it comes out. Download the ROMS Hereif you don't have them yet.
